My old video on Fundamentals of tooth preparation was without audio. So, I removed the older presentation and added this. Watch and listen...

    Need to restore:
    1. Prophylactic(sealants)
    2. Repair
    3. Fracture tooth
    4. Congenital malformation
    5. Improper positioning(diastemma)
    6. Part of other treatment(bridge, denture)
    7. Fracture restoration
    8. defective margins of previous restoration
    9. Gingival overhanging
    10. Improper proximal contact
    11. Poor esthetic(including flourosis)
    Objectives:
    1. Remove all defects(affected dentin can be left only in pulpal floor)
    2. Protect pulp(varnish, liner, base..galvanic shock, thermal conductivity, chemicals from restorative materials)
    3. Conservative preparation
    4. No fracture of tooth.(Cusp capping)
    5. No restoration displacement
    6. Restore the esthetics
    7. Should be functional
Definition: tooth preparation is defined as the mechanical alteration of a defective, injured or diseased tooth in order to best recieved a restorative material which will re-establish a healthy state for the tooth including esthetic correction, along with normal form and function.

Tooth preparation includes acid etching, conditioning and cavity preparation...i.e..not only preparation of a cavity, but also just surface modifications. Before the advent of GIC and Composites, every restoration required preparation of a cavity.SO the term cavity preparation was popular. But after the advent of GIC and Composites, which just required surface modifications and most often does not require a definitive cavity preparation, we now preferable use the term tooth preparation...
