***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Tuesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

The sound of jars pinging on the countertop...such a happy sound of summer!
My grandma would take a WHOLE chicken put it in a crockpot and put a WHOLE jar of what she called Sweet and spicy peppers. Let it cook several hours until done. Then you have sweet and spicy chicken. It also make GREAT sandwiches the next day using the left over cold chicken.
that sounds great
thebovineavenger what a great 👍 thanks
I love jalapeno jelly on a turkey sandwich with all the fixings.
I love your harvest and canning videos. They inspire me to keep growing stuff! Ever since I heard this saying I have loved it: anyone can count the seeds in an apple but only God can count the apples in a seed. You know, gardening keeps my sense of wonder so alive. A tiny seed produces a big plant and food and lots of it. And the food includes seeds for more food! God is so smart!
How true!
We harvest or preserve every day as well!
The goats are doing GREAT and Rorie lets me hand milk her after YEARS of subbornness!! Took some work but it was worth it! 😍🐐🐐🐐🐐
Sage and Stone Homestead did you welcome the goats to your home? I just watched the episode where the babies were born -
@@lisal77 we did! We purchased Rorie and her 2 babies, plus Pepper! They are all doing so great!!
Sage and Stone Homestead would love to see how big they are now. Do you have a clip of them?
@@lisal77 I haven't updated in a long while (Covid has us really busy growing food) but I'll try to update on them soon!! Maybe I'll record during evening goat chores tonight. 😊
Great.
Love your channel, thank you so much for sharing such valuable info. I am 38, have terminal cancer and am on my bucket list cross country trip to see friends & family in an RV. Have LOVED binging your videos on the road. Unfortunately, my dream of homesteading won't come true but I enjoy living vicariously through families like you. The Playlist are especially helpful. However, I have found some things I WILL have fun trying once we return home. I LOVE pepper jelly and my husband LOVES spicy jalapeño anything lol. Cowboy candy is a must once we get home. Will be even better if I can find some farm fresh from a local market, fingers crossed! Thank you for sharing!!
I always have some syrup leftover, so I can that as well, great in BBQ sauces.
Tried it & this is absolutely delicious. Thank you for this fantastic recipe!!! I don’t know how I’ve gone all my life without these.
it's mid March in northern NY 2023....and I needed this. Great vid.
clap clap clap!😊👍🌿
I just started making Cowboy Candy this summer. I no longer can eat a BLT without them! I can them into 4 oz jars, pair them with cream cheese and crackers, put into basket and give them as gifts.
Going to have a living tradition marathon here. Playlist - oldest to newest. I’ve seen most of them already. Oh popcorn time !!
My niece's 5-year-old (starting when he was 4) loves watching the "Kevin and Sarah Channel". If he sees me watching another UA-cam channel, it never fails that he will watch for a few seconds and then say, "That's not Kevin and Sarah. Let's watch Kevin and Sarah build something." He especially loved your last chicken tractor build. Sometimes I will randomly pick another channel just to watch him tell me it's not Kevin and Sarah. When he has the remote, he knows exactly how to find "Kevin and Sarah".
that's adorable
That's so sweet...a new generation watching this great channel! 🤗
I love to brush the liquid on chicken then throw on the grill. The smokiness of the charcoal pairs with the heat of the jalapenos so well. When cooked, we add a few more to the top. I also like to add a few red ripe jalapenos or bell peppers to give it a little extra color and is perfect for gifting at Christmas with the red and green.
Yes, I was thinking how great that sugar mix would be brushed on grilled chicken
I put what is called Jezabel sauce over cream cheese, a jar of apple jelly, a jar of pineapple preserves, and a jar of apricot preserves mix and add horse radish to taste and pepper over a block of cream cheese and bam Jezebel Sauce Enjoy!! Those peppers look great!!!
Yum sounds great 😂
You know so much about gardening and canning. You will never have to go hungry, that for sure. My dad always had a great garden. I’m going to remember to put that fabric down on the garden from now on. I’m going to tell everyone I know that puts out a garden to do it too. Your garden looks amazing! It looks even better with that fabric put down. It kinda makes your garden look like a parking lot with amazing vegetables growing through the pavement. I had never seen it done until I started watching your channel. I noticed that you were even barefoot and still had clean feet 🦶.
This year the first batch of pickles peppers I did I about choked to death and then had a cough for about a day and a half. I’ve been making my friends and family masks. So the next batch I wore a mask and it made a huge difference!
I got a mask from Harbor Freight (P95) that is used for oils and aerosols. It works great. I had the same problem It was under $20.00 and so worth it.
I feel your pain. My first year growing jalapenos I prepared and froze poppers - OMG I could hardly breath - I bought a bandana with flames and peppers just to wear for pepper projects. It helped but not as much as actual mask.
As a former medical professional, unless a mask provides a firm seal around your nose and face it is useless against airborne viruses, you and airborne pneumonia. Also, the masks used are consider only effective for a short time as your breath create moisture and renders them ineffective. If you don't eat jalapenos regularly and become sick, they can be great for causing a immune response. I make chili with jalapenos in a five at crock and slit three habanero sinking them until they fidolve. It is usually more heat than many can handle but it helps purge you.
@Chris B When sick with a cold or flu, it works best to eat the full strength of the peppers or make a high protein chili where you eat the fluids of the peppers. Hot enough to make you sweat, if your stomach can handle it . I have had drips of sweat literally run down from !y scalp. Allergies are a different matter than being sick. The jgetmsvof sickness can be driven out by this but a allergy is not caused by germs.
I love your episodes from your homestead. The recipe for the cowboy candy pickling syrup can be used for your green tomatoes, when they come about. Joan, Denmark
Joan Larsen how do you do that? Please
I’ve been making cowboy candy for years. It’s always so good to put on top of meatloaf.
Laura G. Is your recipe the same? If not, could you share it?!
Trish Bishop My recipe is the same but I do take the seeds out of the peppers and I don’t add the Cayenne peppers.
Laura G. Thank you for answering!,!! I’m going to try this as soon as I have enough to pick!
Oh I bet that’s delicious
That green pepper is beautiful!!!!! Can you show us how you save and store your seeds(from your harvest) for next year?
Yes! Please please please???
Plz plz plzplzzzz
Yea! And my first two bells were small and thin walled. So I know I need to leave them on the plant longer!
@@jmomopan2773 there isn't a gmo pepper variety
Yes, show how you save for next year!
I was really disappointed that the seeds I was starting to dry were not any good, so going heirloom next year.
WELL DONE SARAH! The 'JOY' on your face during harvesting and then preparing, is enough to inspire 'many'! Health and God's blessings on you n' yours!
That extra syrup is gold!
I always find your videos helpful since we just live a few hours north of you. When we can, we always heat a small pan of water to boiling, turn it off and place our new canning lids in for 5 minutes to sterilize them and prepare the rubber seal. Also, with water bath canners, we always had a rack in the bottom of the canner so the glass jars didn't sit directly on the metal bottom of the pot. The water can then circulate under the jars being processed. That said, we discovered the Back to Basics steam canner a few years back and will never go back to water bath canning. (Foods requiring pressure, of course need to be in a pressure canner.) Steam canning is much easier to set up, requires less water, and heats up the kitchen less. Glad you're enjoying the Show-Me State. We're pleased that you moved here!
Thanks for the info in the steam canner. Never heard of it. The rules have changed recently and warming the lids is no longer necessary. I’ve also never used a rack in my canner. Never had a problem. 🤷🏻♀️
You have us hooked on the cowboy candy!
Something new I learned, flash freeze. Dice peppers, place on cookie sheet and without touching one another, put into freezer. After flash freezing, put into your freezer container. The peppers will not sick to one another and you won't have to beat them apart.
I do that too.
I freeze my broccoli that way too and then vacuum pack. They tend to look better in the end.
Sherry Rorabaugh I’d love to do that but, I don’t have room in my freezer to lay out cookie sheets. How do you make room for that?
I do this with everything from zucchini (sliced) to blueberries! If you can't fit a cookie sheet, you can use a plate, cake pan, whatever. I find lining the pans/sheets with parchment or waxed paper makes removing the frozen items easier.
@@DancingHorseFarm1 oh I use those silmats the silicone liners. I ended up getting a bunch of them in every size for my birthday one year. I had asked for them and everyone found the same sale I guess. We all laughed quite long when I opened my gifts and every single person had got me a set. Lol 6 sets later and I still use them a lot. But I used to use either wax or parchment paper before then. 😄
Your garden is so AWESOME,,, You are very knowledgable too!🌱🌱🥬🥦🥑🍆🥒🌶🌶🌶🌽🌽🍅🍅🍅🥕🥕🥕🍀🍀🐝🐝🐞🐞🦋🦋
Have made cowboy candy for about 5 years delicious!! I put it in omelets, burgers, hotdogs, delicious in tacos, any type of sandwich you can think of, marinate meats, I’ve even used the brine as a liquid in my hot pepper and cheese bread yum yum, thanks for sharing your day.
Stuffed peppers for dinner tonight???? Excuse me while I drool🤣🤣😋
Loved this as I miss what used to be a yearly thing for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💚❤️🥰🤗
Kevin those peppers would be good on a bologna sandwich too. Beautiful job of canning Sarah. You two are great. God Bless
My new favorite for cowboy candy is on grilled cheese sandwiches!!!! Also, when I sliced the peppers I had to buy a mask from Harbor Freight that is used for paint spray, ect. It's a P95 mask for solid and oil aerosols. I had problems with slicing because of the fumes and it affected my lungs for hours. I finally asked a lady in my class that makes pepper jellies professionally and she suggested the mask. It was under $20.00 and sooo worth it. Also, my original recipe calls for 2 Tablespoons of mustard seed. My peppers aren't ready yet. Still small :( Thank you for your wonderful videos.
We love these on a hot dog.
we core our bell peppers and freeze them whole for stuffed peppers during the winter
Same
That's cool! Never thought of that good idea.
Do you need to blanch them to do this?
@@jessicah2345 we never have just cored and rinsed
Jessica H no cut off top deseed and throw them in a freezer bag. I stuff them frozen when i make stuffed peppers. Turn out great. Have been doing it for 35 years.
Love your videos I always find them interesting thanks
UA-cam canning videos inspired me to make Cowboy Candy...first batch was such a hit! Since it only made four 1/2 pints, and because family asked me for jars, I canned a 2d batch...and doubled it! I also preserved the leftover syrup and my spouse drizzles it on everything.
Best video ever for Cowboy Candy!!!
Sitting on my front porch having a cup of coffee and a notification popped up and this made my day thank you guys so much god bless and look forward to many more harvesting video you guys are amazing and so relaxing to watch keep doing what you do you have been an amazing blessing to my family
I am drinking coffee watching too. After this I'm hoping my other favorite farmers have a video up too. The deep south homestead
Whippoorwill Hollow is amazing also.
Sarah...those peppers are gorgeous!!! Whatever you are doing is sure working well! Thanks for sharing your version of Cowboy Candy... 🤩🤩🤩
Oh my gosh. your jalapenos were beautiful. So many on your plants. I am so jealous ...my plants never produce like that. What a wonderful and lush garden.
The garden looks so BEAUTIFUL! My mouth was watering looking at all those yummy veggies, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE, fried green tomatoes! Yum. The cowboy candy sounds wonderful on top of cream cheese and crackers. 😋😋😋😋😋
Debra! fried green tomatoes are about my favorite
Always reminds me of my sweet sweet momma.
I love to hear the popping of my canned goods. Cowboy candy is something we will definitely have to try. A favorite in our house is Strawberry Jalapeno Jam.
Yummmm!! Do you have a recipe that you can share?
I love this channel so much. My husband and i garden and use ALL the advice that Kevin and Sarah give. We owe our beautiful garden to them.
So question for anyone who can answer. We got the garden ground cover that Kevin and Sarah got. How long does it typically last before it has to be replaced? Just something we were curious about. We used a hand torch to make our holes so it doesn't fray. And we are going to roll it up every fall and store it during winter.... Someone let me know. Thanks in advance.
Andi and Brian
You should get 5 or more years out of it. We have some that is on its 3rd season now and is still in great shape! So glad it’s working as well for you as it has for us! God Bless!
I just got mine too and I'm hopeful that this will help turn the table in my war on weeds. My question is does it have to be removed in the fall or can you just leave it out over winter?
Also I love that you share recipes you make with your crops. It's nice to get new ideas.
SILKS Family Farm You can leave it out, but after the first year, dirt and weed seeds will blow onto it and germinate and grow down through. Also, some will grow up through as well, especially in the holes where the pins are poked to hold it down. Also, it’s a good idea to amend the soil underneath with some kind of organic matter every year so the soil doesn’t compact too much.
I think kevin and Sarah said to pull it up. I think for rotation proposes.
Good morning 🌞Have a blessed day to you all. It’s a nice day. So beautiful plants.
Beautiful garden...beautiful produce! Great hat!!!
I canned these last year for the first time. A little extra work but so worth it. We liked them so much, we planted twice as many jalapeno peppers this year.
Revisiting this episode as I'm making my 2021 batch of cowboy candy! Cheers!
Cowboy candy is awesome on a fresh salad!!!
Thank you for showing me how to make cowboy candy in such a step by step way. I think I can tackle this project now.
You have such a beautiful organized garden!!!!
Stuff peppers and bell peppers are delicious. Slice bell peppers baked on meats are good.I just 💘 them.
You mentioned cooking them in your syrup, I actually tried something new last year and it worked great and was incredible for the flavor. I roasted my peppers in the oven before i chopped them and it was amazing
Yes they are good roast in the oven or wrap up on a grill.
I swear I could smell those while you were cutting them up LOL nice job they look delicious!
I must say Sarah, the start of the video with you walking barefoot in your garden was really pretty.
I think I would add a tsp of salt to the syrup. Just to bring out all the flavours
We love any kind of pepper jelly on a cracker with pimento cheese. So good.
We add a couple of tablespoons of the syrup to our potato salad, use the syrup to can pineapple chunks. We call it cowboy pineapple. My husbands favorite is cowboy onions. Cook onions in the syrup until soft and then can.
Cowboy candy looks yum. So do those peppers. Those bell peppers were massive already.
Hello from Maryland! My wife and I have been watching for a while now before the Corona virus hit the US . We enjoy your upbeat personalities and homesteading tips. You and your husband have been a blessing to us. Would love to meet you all someday. May God continue to bless you and your family. Amen!
We hope you are blessed as well!
You mentioned doing your first batch of cowboy candy without cooking your peppers. That’s exactly what I did the first time I pickled banana peppers. Lol.
Absolutely love all your videos. I was raised in that area on 100 acres-but my husband and I are just getting started on our own small homestead in Louisiana, after doing the corporate “expected thing,” (me) and the military (him). I want my children to grow up like I did, and understand how to do for yourself.
I’m learning a ton from you, and remembering so much that I had forgotten. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! Bless your family!
The opening images and sounds made me happy - i love being in such a lovely garden! I wonder how this would taste with the nadapeno’s?
As soon as you said you were making something sweet and spicy with jalapeños, I knew it was going to be cowboy candy. I learnt what it was through another homesteading UA-cam couple at Simple Living Alaska. We’re not fans of super spicy, but I know that this recipe, minus the extra cayenne, would go down great on burgers in our house.
Beautiful peppers and jalapenos!!
Your garden is beautiful!
Yum!!! Loving your garden as always.
I just hot water bath canned for the first time making your cowboy candy recipe. Thank you so much for taking the fear out of that!
These are so delish as a bite along with cornbread or corn pudding! ♥️
Hoping all went well with Kevin’s parents move. You will probably update when you have your next video answering questions. As always love your content and videos.
I was wanting to know as well. I was about to post then thought, lets check the other posts to see if anyone else mentioned it. Sarah, Love your videos.
Me too
Oh wonderful, I make jalapeño sauce, I grind up all my pepper’s with a pinch of salt and vinegar, then I strain off all the juice save the pulp an freeze that to add to my dishes that need a kick, and the juice I put in jars and do the same as you, it’s great for splashing on nachos. God bless
My canners live on my stove this time of year. Also every sheet pan is out and my vacuum sealer live in my counter.
😂😂😂😂 my canners live on the stove.....🤣😂😂😂😂
Me too. Well this is the first year I've done so much. I've done very little in the past. I want to put it away but I keep making stuff!
cockeyedhomestead so does mine and the vacum sealer, my husband thinks I’m crazy because I make noise with sealer when he is sleeping, I’ve got my canner and the bell electric canner on my counter, great canner minds think alike👍
@@sallyellis4361 Yes, they do. It's easier than putting it away and dragging it out just to can the next day.
@@beautifuldreamer3991 dreamer. lol back at you. I've got two of them and they take over half the stove top.
My cowboy candy are in their water bath as I write. You are such an inspiration. TY
Yes the California Wonder is favorite for years.
Love cowboy candy!!!! Yummmm!
I love making pepper jelly and I use it to add to field peas, butter beans and collards
I made and tasted Cowboy Candy for the first time today. Oh My! Thanks for the recipe!
I love candied jalapeno. I bought a pint jar for $8.00 before I decided to make my own. Even with buying the jalapenos I can make a pint for about a dollar. I love them on cream cheese and they are great with any barbeque.
I loved this!
Hi Sarah, congratulations for your awesome harvest!! Dear, if you want your jalapeños to abound more, perhaps you'd like to try experiment with a twist: we usually add sliced carrots, sliced onions and garlic to our jalapeños when we can them. The vegetables absorb some of the heat and taste delicious. We stirfry all the vegetables before filling the jars. You can also add bay leaves, thyme and a little salt to the mixture. We find it delicious!
I love watching your channel it makes me happy.
Enjoy watching your videos...they take me back to my early childhood when I lived on my grandparent's farm...I lived in the big city as an adult but the memories of living on a farm have always stayed with me even to this day when I'm in my mid 60's...
As a new gardener, I find the biggest challenges are: 1) Exactly when to harvest peas, beans, cucumbers, etc. 2) How to properly cook them. 3) How to freeze the excess for later cooking. As it is harvesting time for you, and if it is of interest, perhaps you could do some videos on those topics. Thanks!
Your gardens are gorgeous. The cowboy candy looks great. 💖
Gonna try this for sure!!
I love that your harvest is going into your cute little basket!
You seem to be doing well. We thank the Lord. You and Kevin are good teachers and we love your channel.
take ice cube trays put diced peppers any kind when frozen pop them out store them in storage container or freezer bags can do this with onions also my icecube trays are 2 tsp percube
YAS!!!! Great idea! Thank you!
I do this with so many foods, including roughly mashed avocado with a swish of lemon juice. Found this to be the only successful way to freeze avocado. Cubes thaws out to be no different to fresh avocado in texture and taste.
I use the ice cube trays for my homegrown pesto when my limes come on I zest and juice them juice goes in ice cube trays and zest on a cookie sheet to fast freeze
this stuff is awesome !
Love to see you harvest your vegetables. The peppers looked so good !!!!
Awesome display, thank you so much fo sharing!
Thank you so much Sara I've always wanted to try this. Love your kitchen
