Even worse, gigabyte cards are still cracking at a pretty high rate. I have a founders edition card and it’s incredibly rigid, I had no sag at all (verified with a level) but still installed a support. It definitely can’t hurt.

I wouldn't be so chill about it - I suggest following GPU repair channels (Like Northwest Repair), you'll see plenty of ripped pads and cracked solder joints under both the core and memory chips, and sometimes even cracked PCBs with broken traces. I would not worry about the motherboard so much, but I would worry about the GPU considering a high end one costs more than the rest of the system these days.

Yeah these heavy ass fucking cards need to stop being a thing. The 1080 Ti Founder's Edition should be the universal standard for high end to even very high end graphics. 250 watt two-slot cards. And that was back in the 10 series era, however, I don't know if that was caused by shearing forces from moving it or something. @MtnNerd oh I agree 100% but even the idea that it can add some latency for those fanatics makes them not want to use it the more important issue is that vertical mounted gpus can struggle to get air as they can be right up against the side panel on a lot of cases.

    • @MrLind87
      @MrLind87 9 місяців тому

Maybe adding more layers to the PCB and a beefier PCI-E slot shield with a sturdier and more reliable mounting mechanism would just do that for earthquakes but that would add a significant price to the motherboard and for something that may never will be used because not everyone puts a 2Kg GPU on their motherboard. Maybe only a super premium gaming enthusiast manufacturer would do that but not the average mid range motherboard manufacturers that most people go to.

The idea of burning in headphones has always been bullshit. I remember hearing about that long long ago. Heard it so much I almost thought maybe there was something to it, but never really did it for myself. Then my very well used headphones started struggling with a loose wire and I bought an exact replacement. Lo and behold, my new replacement headphones sounded exactly the same as the old one. Literally no discernible difference aside from the right headphone cutting out. Undoubtedly those who bought into the burn in myth bought different models a few times and thought burn in is why they always liked their previous headphones more than the new ones rather than mistaking their ears getting used to the sound.

This vid reminded me of a very good question, and its on-topic:
Why are the screw slots on GPUs "the wrong way"?
If the GPU wants to not be held, it will just slide under the screw and possibly do something bad to the MB
And if the screw slots were the opposite way, the GPUs weight would just push on a screw and nothing would happen

That's really weird, about the headphones. If anything, the fact that I get 'used' to the sound of my old headphones makes new ones always sound better to me because it's different and refreshing, even if the new pair isn't as good objectively. If your ears get used to how everything sounds, then wanting to go back to that stale sound again seems counter-intuitive.

  • @PAPO1990

"Brain Burn In" is 100% a real thing, and likely more significant in MOST cases than actual "burn in" but when I put on a pair of headphones for less than a full song, don't like how they sound, and leave them playing in a drawer over night, then after being sceptical of burn in noticed a BIG difference, explain to me then, that burn in isn't a thing. I bought these from a brick and mortar store, and being only a few days after purchase I was well within the return window if I didn't like them after burn in.
(edit for clarity: Not ALL headphones have much, if ANY burn in period, but SOME really do seem to, as I described, but I've had other headphones where I knew immediately it was just that I was not accustomed to the sound signature, and I got used to them over time)

It makes me very grateful for the open and horizontal design of the test bench. It has enough space for the massive card and the weight pushes into the socket rather than trying to bend it.

It's clamped on by 4 points that reinforce each other, on a normally vertical board that is anchored in several spots. You'd have to have a VERY heavy air cooler for it to even start to be an issue. Graphics card weight is placed heavily on the PCB itself from only two points by default (the PCIE slot and the case screwe) with all the weight perpendicular, which bends it, cracking solder balls and/or pads - NOT GOOD.

quick thing on the ¨burn in¨ nonsense. While it is true that the actual process is pretty much useless that doesn't mean that there is no merit to some of the testimonies. the reality is that ear pads greatly affect sound and of course if you wear your headphones for a long time then your ear pads will start to change over time. In some cases this can result in an improvement. For example the infamous dt990 from beyerdynamic are less harsh when used with older pads. This can go both ways tho. a pair of already solid headphones could become worse over time due to your pads. the HD6XX/600 come to mind.

I feel like if your graphics card falls out of your computer's mobo, I feel like it's a manufacturing error at that point with the slot itself or the soldering under the pcie slot needs rework. I work with solder on a daily basis and if something falls out of place, I know for a fact I messed up.

5:00 one potential benefit of doing those burn in tests is if theres any major manufacturing faults its most likely going to trip them and kill the earphones/headset quick enough for you to have a lot less issue with claiming warranty.
Particularly before you end up tossing the box and having the receipt buried in with other warranty information/dockets.

Um those screws are bog standard and you likely have a dozen of them in your case. If nothing else pull 1 screw out of your psu you only need 2 screws in a psu of a comp that is not being moved around in fact many cases only use 2 screws

I've also heard that one should turn the volume of the system (eg. on Windows) to the max, and use the volume control of the headset (eg. a knob) to control the final volume instead, to get the fullest dynamic range.
Is that true? Or does it make little difference in reality?

Some improperly designed audio devices (like cheap phones) sound worse when at their limit, so I'd make sure the highest volume actually works well.
But other than that I think it makes sense because analog volume controls are much more precise than the 10-20 levels that most systems support.
