    great tips in this video.
i have one question on level of readiness for an upcoming exam.
when a wine falls into drink now, should we also assess "not suitable for ageing" or not suitable for further ageing "?
    my answer should be
    1) drink now:not suitable for ageing / drink now:not suitable for further ageing
    or
    2) drink now:not suitable for ageing or further ageing
    cheers

I would have use the music analogy as pop (light), blues (medium) rock (medium plus), jazz (pronounce)

This is really great. Is there always a correlation between the visual inspection e.g the garnet color, to lead you to tertiary call? Thank you and cheers!

There can certainly be a correlation between seeing a garnet color and perceiving tertiary as both can indicate age or maturity on a wine. Since the way that we are assessing garnet color would be a wine that is predominantly red with brown hues in it, the brown color could indicate two things in a red wine. If the wine was exposed to limited amounts of oxygen during its maturation, the oxidation of the wine could lead to browning in the wine and could lead to the development of tertiary notes. However, not all wines may develop many tertiary notes or particularly complex ones and might just show diminished fruit character. You would likely see this in less complex wines. The brown hue can also come from the polymerization of tannins as the wine ages in the bottle (the tannins and other compounds in the wine link up with one another and get so large they “fall out” of the liquid forming sediment at the bottom of the bottle). Tannins bind with the red color pigments and when they polymerize, it makes the wine lose its concentration of red color, going from a ruby to a garnet color. Depending on the grape variety’s color concentration and tannins, this could happen quickly or slowly over many years. The wines that this happens slowly for will often display tertiary aromas. However, you might pick up tertiary notes on a wine that is still showing predominantly ruby tones if the aroma compounds in the wine are evolving at a faster rate than the tannins are polymerizing. So it’s a safe bet that garnet color will likely equal tertiary notes, but tertiary notes on a wine do not always mean the wine will be garnet.

Napa Valley Wine Academy thank you. That was a great response. I’m doing more and more tastings as I go through my trading and certifications and this is very helpful! Cheers!
