Many times it isn't a win. Many of them refuse repairs because of the cost. What would be a win, is a mandatory yearly inspection and if it isn't safe you are forbidden by law to drive it and if a cop finds out you'll have to tow it and you'll get a ticket. That's how it works in sophisticated countries. It is also a good way to find out what's wrong before the cost skyrocket when you have to replace parts you wouldn't have to if you just did the maintenance.

In terms of rust, why don’t automakers apply rust resistant coatings to their vehicle parts and undercarriage? And issue a guide to have rust proof coatings reapplied to the undercarriage at certain age of the vehicle as a form of necessary maintenance? I think you can get that done in body shops. I think this should become a law in Rust Belt States if it isn’t already. Cars would last longer that way. But this is just my opinion, people can do whatever they want.

All those vehicles decaying over rust issues are happening in areas that are very well known to be associated with such problems. Where I live, there is no need for extreme rust prevention measures/expenses. Adding cost and weight to a new vehicle that doesn't need them is counterintuitive. I have a 45 year old GM B Body that is still rust free. It's not a show car. It has tons of miles on it and is driven regularly. There was never a need for it to carry around expensive coatings and/or stainless hardware and components. I don't really want to have to pay for stuff on a new vehicle that I don't need, and if I know that rust prevention is something to worry about in certain areas, the people that live in those areas should know about it as well. People around here know that if you don't park under a shelter, the sun will burn up the paint and interior. You either accept that fact and let it get torn up by the sun, or you do something to help prevent the damage, like park in a garage, and then accept that you're still going to have sun damage over time.
Just like the top, the underside of a vehicle is painted at the factory, and that was all the rust prevention my car needed underneath to last nearly a half century, and I don't expect the manufacturer to provide a shelter to protect the topside.
I'm just saying that you either do nothing and accept the reality of it happening, or you do something about it, but making other people in other areas pay for stuff they don't need isn't the cure. Plus the people that never do any maintenance are still going to let the cars fall apart for some other reason.
Bullet resistant armor definitely helps reduce battlefield injuries/fatalities, but they don't eliminate those things, and I wouldn't make people that are no where near the battlefield, wear such armor 'just in case,'

1st video, I drove taxi for a company with cheep bastard owner. We had to operate on tires in like condition. New tires were either well used, or retreads if he was feeling generous.

3:20 if you think thats bad you should have seen my moms Volvo V40 D3 air filter last year before i changed it. Saw that there was never an air filter change since we bought the car in 2021. Took the filter out, the orange spongy foam was all cracked and ripped, the filter was very gray and dirty and full of sand and the wool looking stuff was just gone, nowhere to be found, just a bit of silicone looking glue stuff in its place. Glad i ignored my dad trying to discourage me and invalidate me and checked the air filter while i was swapping the light bulb

How common is it to find a car in that condition in the US? Are there any regulations about the vehicle condition that should be met to drive public roads?

Law enforcement can cite you or (in severe cases) seize your vehicle for equipment failures or other safety issues, but this is rare. Generally if you pay registration, pass the emissions test, and it looks like a stett legal vehicle, you can drive just about anything on public roads... 'Murica.

what really scares me when ever i see them super clogged nasty cabin air filters is, how bad/much of all that have i inhaled over my lifetime in older cars/trucks that don't even have cabin filters!!! cuz even a totally clogged filter still filters out the cr@p. it almost certainly also filters out (blocks) most of the air in general, killing your flow rate, but as long as its not ripped or torn or full of rodent holes, its still actually stopping dust and debris just fine. but on older vehicles, all that nastiness would just potentially get put in the cabin for you to breath, build up on the evaporator coil and/or heater core, as well as the blower fan cage. who knows what it would look like if you tore apart an 80s car air duct system! really i can't believe they didn't have cabin filters already then. ya I'm sure come cars may have had them, but not anything gm, ford, dodge, stuff. i can see Mercedes or Jaguar or BMW possibly having them though. but them are cars i have never been able to afford, and never will. so i'ma be happy with my 80's ride!

@2:32 How disgusting you have to be to just casually go out with a car in that state. I understand that I have a dirty car, but that's nowhere close to being like that. I will do deep clean after winter on mine though, will steam off all the salts that will accumulate on the carpets throughout the wet 'n salty winter.
Edit: Watched the whole video, this content never disappoints, but the condition on these cars make me speechless.

It's better not to have safety inspections.
Unfortunately, many car owners obviously can't handle the responsibility of keeping their vehicles roadworthy themselves.
When things go too far, legislation must intervene. Which is annoying.

Rock salt 'sweats' at >80% humidity ('hygroscopic') but not much in the dry cold of Winter. (Rinse underbody w/plain water in Spring) The chloride (CaCl) that MI and other states spray on dirt roads to minimize dust and somewhat 'cement' solidity 'sweats' at >20% humidity, aka 24/7/365 here in the Midwest, with road salt still getting the rap in many places where dust is the culprit. btw, Driving/owning/wrenching since '66.
