    Thank you, Jim, I love these plant family videos-so interesting to learn from. Surprises for me: this family includes caryopteris, vitex and did you say teak?! Throughout the video, I was thinking ‘what about the agastache?!’ You covered it at the end, and I love it with its herbaceous and unique hybrid scent of mint and sage. Please keep these coming!

    Love this new series! It's really interesting to learn the connections between different plants in our garden - for me knowledge only enhances my enjoyment! For those wondering, plant "Families" are the classification just above genus, and end (usually) in -aceae (for reference animal families end (usually) in -idae). For context, Felidae is the cat family, which includes lions and tigers, all the way to our domestic kitties.

    Thank you! I am growing many members of this wonderful plant family in my pollinator garden. I think you've said Russian Basil is particularly attractive to bees. I have regular Basil and they love the flowers on it, I grow it just for them. But I'm keeping my eyes open for the Russian variety for next year. I grow Rosemary for the bees too, but I have it in a big pot this time. I must have gotten ahold of a large bush variety and it was so hard to dig it completely out of the ground when I let it take over years back, it was like chopping through Juniper roots. Love these helpful and informative videos. Thank you Jim and Stephanie. And Holly!

    • @SteveL2012
      @SteveL2012 2 роки тому +2

      I agree with Jim, mountain mint is beautiful but it reseeds prolifically in warmer zones. We (try to) keep it contained to containers in hard scape, but it even reseeds in the fine spaces between pavers. The soft texture it adds to a composition of potted plants makes it worth it though-and it’s fantastic in tea-often used frequently in the Middle East.

    • @deannahaworth7666
      @deannahaworth7666 2 роки тому +1

      @@SteveL2012 I grow it at the native plant beds at the local botanical gardens and I've never had it be agressive since I deal with native plants all the time lots of them are spreaders and take maintenance to keep them contained but worth it to attract pollinators , my slender mountain mint must be a shorter less agressive variety , it has been in the bed a long time was there before I took over 5 years ago

    Monarda is a great plant for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Lost ALL of mine this past winter in NW Ohio . I had luck with black and blue salvia wintering over for me for years. Lost most of them this past winter as well. Having some issues in the garden and not sure what's going on. Agastache is one of my favorites too. Great pollinator plant.

    • @marybeth4002
      @marybeth4002 2 роки тому

      I've had a similar experience with Mondara this year. Last couple years it was full and plentiful with pollinators all over it - this year had some (just a handful) blossoms, however, they looked pale and beat up. Haven't seen one pollinator on them at all. I'm in the metropolitan Detroit area and not far away from NW Ohio and agree that something is 'off 'in my landscape with other plants as well.

One of my biggest issues with adding shrubs trees or most anything ,the fire ants always build on the new planting. I'm in se NC and backed up to thousand acres of swamp. The first 6 or so inches sandy Lome then aprox 6 inches of yellow sand then entire property aprox 6 inches of grey clay then pure white sand and the water. There it's either wet or hard and dry. I don't use chemicals because of how close the water is.

However our temperature in zone 7A NJ has been high eighties and low 90s, with rain about once a week. What do you say about moving it and putting an Emerald Green Arborvitae in it's place? The garden centers are having big sales right now, so while normally I would wait, it's a good opportunity right now. I would love to hear your thoughts, thank you.

    I was just reading about using salvia next to roses to help prevent leaf spot. Particularly salvia microphylla. I’m assuming that means any of the small leaf varieties. I’d like to give it a try and see if it helps. I love salvias anyway so it won’t bother me to plant more of it. Any varieties you might suggest to go with a dark pink climbing rose? I saw caradonna yesterday at the store but I don’t think that would be considered small leafed.
