    It's 5 am, I haven't owned a die cast car for almost 20 years, and I'm binge watching a man restoring die cast cars. Men making stuff with their hands has some sort of weird sense of community and respect to it that draws you in.

    While I did noticed the slight imperfection in the sawtooth detail of the hood, you covered it well enough. To be bluntly honest I thought it was a casting roughness. After all they don't make these cars with collecting in mind. They make them for kids to play with. I do miss my old cars and I have watched and enjoyed many of your videos. It's great to know people like you are giving new interest and love back into these wonderful toys. Well done!

    While viewing other custom Spectraflame painting videos, I learned the scientific principle of that type of paintjob which yields the particular look it has, and your preparation of the metal body before painting might be countering what the zinc plating is inteded to do. See, the zinc plating on the castings produce a faceted surface that reflects light in a multitude or varied directions unlike a smoothly polished surface that reflects light in a more singular direction. Customizers warn NOT to polish the casting with wool or fine sandpaper as it will remove the facets of the zinc. It is recommeded to ONLY use pait remover and then a tumbler (gentle) to prep for the Spectraflame paint. I hope this was helpful. You can watch the UA-cam video if you type Kewords (The science behind Spectraflame paint made by REDLINE restoration.

    • @baremetalHW
      @baremetalHW  8 років тому

      what you say is 100% correct... the problem I encounter is that the oxidation on most of the junkers I get is so bad that the "gentle polishing" will not remove it... getting the zinc crystals back after sanding is something that I am actually working on.. I am planning on trying a electrolysis method using formic acid and stainless steel to etch the crystals and bring back the facets. I have also been working on nickel plating the cars, just like Mattel originally did, but have had only limited success... thanks for the info... you have inspired me to jump back into trying this solution.

    i know its an old vid but i used 2 airbrush pistols with the valejo space dust simultime, the 77.006 gold to pale blue shift and the 77.015 gold toburned orange. where i spray one from front to middle and the othe from back to middle in multiple layers of a black basecoat. i had many many trys and errors because due the nature of the process i had to be faster with coating the middle since they overlap or would be to thick otherwise. i think it was one of the chevy vans or the ford supervan
