As someone who worked 4 years as a Corrections Officer at a large county jail, it's pretty normal procedure to put high profile individuals under Suicide Watch immediately upon intake at a facility. There's a long history of celebrities & high profile people attempting to harm themselves once the reality of their situation kicks in. This does not always mean they're under 24/7 surveillance though. It usually means they're put in a separate holding cell (with limited to access to points where they could tie themselves up on), and have an officer personally check on them every 10 minutes (as opposed to hourly which is standard in many states). But if an inmate is determined enough, they can definitely find ways to hurt themselves even in that 10 minute period, so for the first 24 hours you may have a dedicated officer stationed nearby they're cell.

@saradominnz I've gone back & forth with Epstein. Suicide attempts happened every day at our jail, but only a couple per year were successful (if that). He definitely was placed on suicide watch immediately, so either he did it during the period in between checks OR the officers there got complacent, didn't take their job seriously, and didn't pay attention. And even though it sounds crazy, just remember many corrections officers are just your average, under-paid & over-worked person who can easily get into a routine. Suicides in jails & prisons happen all the time, but for people as high profile as Epstein, he should've been under much more surveillance & treated more seriously.
They're all connected and covering for each other. It's disgusting. This is why I hate the culture of "snitches get stitches", nah, snitches save lives. If Usher 10 years ago sounded the alarm, it might have saved tons of people from real harm.

Hi, I’m a mental health professional who has worked in a jail. Typically, PC (protective custody) is for high profile cases/gang affiliated individuals/etc. But it’s separate from suicide watch. Typically suicide watch is for individuals who either make suicidal statements or actively are self-harming/making suicide attempts. Hope this is helpful for anyone curious EDIT: one thing I forgot to mention, since this post has gotten some traction and I don’t want to mislead. First, I was giving the perspective of how things are run at the jail I worked at, not all jails are the same and things are probably different where Diddy is. Second, I didn’t even mention Diddy himself mostly because I can only speculate what’s going on with him. But if I had to, I’d say (again speaking from the viewpoint of if Diddy was held where I worked) that he was either PCA’d (meaning the supervisors deemed his case to be too high profile (obviously lol) or that other inmates were making threats in hopes of getting him out of their pod (which happens often)), Diddy requested PC himself (which inmates are allowed to do if they feel “unsafe” on the pod (a lot of gang stuff or snitches lead to this usually), or he made suicidal statements or gestured and was put on risk/suicide watch. I’ve never seen someone put on suicide watch as a direct result of their charges, but then again I never saw a case as publicized and awful as Diddy so it is entirely possible. But anyways fuck Diddy

As someone who worked 4 years as a Corrections Officer at a large county jail, it's pretty normal procedure to put high profile individuals under Suicide Watch immediately upon intake at a facility.
There's a long history of celebrities & high profile people attempting to harm themselves once the reality of their situation kicks in. This does not always mean they're under 24/7 surveillance though. It usually means they're put in a separate holding cell (with limited to access to points where they could tie themselves up on), and have an officer personally check on them every 10 minutes (as opposed to hourly which is standard in many states).
But if an inmate is determined enough, they can definitely find ways to hurt themselves even in that 10 minute period, so for the first 24 hours you may have a dedicated officer stationed nearby they're cell.

@saradominnz I've gone back & forth with Epstein. Suicide attempts happened every day at our jail, but only a couple per year were successful (if that).
He definitely was placed on suicide watch immediately, so either he did it during the period in between checks OR the officers there got complacent, didn't take their job seriously, and didn't pay attention.
And even though it sounds crazy, just remember many corrections officers are just your average, under-paid & over-worked person who can easily get into a routine. Suicides in jails & prisons happen all the time, but for people as high profile as Epstein, he should've been under much more surveillance & treated more seriously.
They're all connected and covering for each other. It's disgusting.
This is why I hate the culture of "snitches get stitches", nah, snitches save lives. If Usher 10 years ago sounded the alarm, it might have saved tons of people from real harm.

Hi, I’m a mental health professional who has worked in a jail. Typically, PC (protective custody) is for high profile cases/gang affiliated individuals/etc. But it’s separate from suicide watch. Typically suicide watch is for individuals who either make suicidal statements or actively are self-harming/making suicide attempts. Hope this is helpful for anyone curious
EDIT: one thing I forgot to mention, since this post has gotten some traction and I don’t want to mislead. First, I was giving the perspective of how things are run at the jail I worked at, not all jails are the same and things are probably different where Diddy is. Second, I didn’t even mention Diddy himself mostly because I can only speculate what’s going on with him. But if I had to, I’d say (again speaking from the viewpoint of if Diddy was held where I worked) that he was either PCA’d (meaning the supervisors deemed his case to be too high profile (obviously lol) or that other inmates were making threats in hopes of getting him out of their pod (which happens often)), Diddy requested PC himself (which inmates are allowed to do if they feel “unsafe” on the pod (a lot of gang stuff or snitches lead to this usually), or he made suicidal statements or gestured and was put on risk/suicide watch. I’ve never seen someone put on suicide watch as a direct result of their charges, but then again I never saw a case as publicized and awful as Diddy so it is entirely possible. But anyways fuck Diddy
