in the case of your computer to printer packet, your computer could send it's message to the printer via your router instead of a switch. So the message will have the MAC of the router and the IP of the printer. If you use a switch one day, and a router another, the same protocol will work.
The interesting question is the case of one of many local computers send a packet to google via the router. When google returns the puppy packet, how does your router know which local computer gets the puppy packet? Your router has to remember for which local computer it sent out the request to google.
