You are completely right about Motown being an influence. They were from Flint, Michigan right near Detroit! They love Motown and you should hear them doing their awesome cover of Little Eva's the Loco-motion! Back then it was pretty different for a hard rock band to incorporate the feeling of Motown songs. And all 3 have a great voice!

Went to see GFR at Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, the venue of the famous Doors concert a year earlier, and the GFR concert was sold out. My friend and I were hanging out in the parking lot with several hundred other folks who couldn't get in when we heard lead guitarist Mark Farner say "we're gonna turn up the volume for our brothers and sisters outside". That was by far the best concert I didn't get to see. It was one big party outside. Those guys could rock!

I was about to comment the same thing. A song in order to convey the emotions it needs to, the writer has to "FEEL" it. At least at one point in their life. In fact often those feelings are what INSPIRED the song to begin with. Even songs that are strictly crafted as opposed to inspired
the writer uses his emotions and life experience.

Bands in the Seventies did a lot of hit covers of songs from the Sixties. Rare Earth did their version of "Get Ready," and Nazareth's big hit was "Love Hurts" by the Everly Brothers. Linda Ronstadt did a bunch of covers, like "Heat Wave" by Martha & the Vandellas. Diana Ross did a version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" that went to #1 in 1970, just three years after Marvin Gaye's version went to #19. And of course Van Halen did a popular version of "Dancing in the Streets" (also by Martha & the Vandellas).

The original Soul Brothers Six was sung exactly the same way and sounds similar but it is largely forgotten (It's on UA-cam of course.) That's why Lex hears Motown or the Chi-lites. The line "Can I get a witness?" is obviously from Gospel. "I'm You Captain/Closer to Home" (long version) should be your next GFR song. That was their significant anthem and is from their successful "Closer to Home" album.

Per Songfacts.com "Some Kind of Wonderful" was originally recorded in 1967 by an R&B group called the Soul Brothers Six. Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer got the idea to record it. "We all grew up in Flint, Michigan," he said in a Songfacts interview. "We used to listen to a station called WAMM, which was a black station in Flint. We all grew up on R&B, gospel and soul music, and they used to play the Soul Brothers Six version of that song all the time on WAMM radio in the '60s. When we were traveling around the country, I used to start singing that song in the back of the car a cappella, and everybody would just kind of jump in and sing along with me - 'I don't need a whole lots of money, I don't need a big fine car.' We'd kind of shear off on the choruses and stuff, and our manager said, 'That's a great song, why don't you record it,' so we recorded the song and it became a huge hit."
In this song, the guy is dirt poor, but he couldn't be happier, thanks to his sweet lovin' woman who knows how to treat him right.
The song was written by Soul Brothers Six frontman John Ellison, who went backstage at a 2018 Grand Funk concert, where he told the story of the song. The idea came to him at 4 a.m. when he was holding his girl in his arms. "We were broke, and I thought, 'I don't need a whole lot of money,'" Ellison said.
He fleshed out the song and brought it to the band, which had been playing gigs in and around their hometown of Rochester, New York and had released some singles on the local label Fine Records. According to Ellison, a local radio DJ heard them rehearsing the song and helped get the recording to Atlantic Records, which signed the band. Released as their first single on the label, it stalled at #91. The group's only other chart entry was "What Can You Do When You Ain't Got Nobody," which topped out at #107.
The Grand Funk cover of "Some Kind of Wonderful" provided a nice income for Ellison. His relationship with the woman who inspired the song didn't last; when he told the story in 2018, his wife asked if he remembered that girl. He wisely replied that he didn't, and reminded her that the song paid for their house.

This is a remake of the Soul Brother's Six song. Grand Funk would sing the song as a warm up on the way to shows in the limo. Their limo driver asked them the name of the song and said they should record it. They did and the rest is history.

Look at Brad. Holding up his hand to affirm his woman is SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL. And to Lex for joining the church chorus to reaffirm the statement and be a witness.
Next up, I'M YOUR CAPTAIN/CLOSER TO HOME and FOOTSTOMPIN' MUSIC. Enjoy.
