Your Dad absolutely made this video, I loved hearing his nightmare inducing stories of that crap ass engine
Crazy how infamous these engines are, My 1984 Cadillac Seville still has the original 4.1 in it from the factory and just keeps going and going for miles. I must be lucky as hell.
Lol yea, id say its one of the lucky ones. It made it this far, maybe itl just stay together.
@@UsefulEntertainment So far it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, put 142k miles on it and keep hustling. Been a good reliable daily driver believe it or not.
@@arcane4848 glad to hear. I got a guy where i work that dailys an 85 Eldorado with the original motor, seems to be doing alright so far.
Just like the 350 diesels. There are some that keep going. I've heard that a good warm up before getting on it was key.
I worked on these engines back in the 80s and the anti freeze would actually seep through the porous aluminum block. You would satisfy this repair campaign by dropping a leak stopper pellet into the radiator. Never bought a GM after seeing this and other nightmares.
funny, my dad said the same thing once about the seepage and the pellets
@@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL G.M. wouldn't ever admit that and the customer never knew about the pellets. G.M. only cared about getting the vehicles through the warranty period, scumbags. I'd never buy a G.M. vehicle.
@@gregoryl8374 All corporations are like that. Far more Huyandais and Kias are catching on fire than GM Fieros ever did. All the old, classic Grumman USPS vehicles you see on the road have GM Iron Duke engines in them, despite the trucks being out of production since 1994. They're dogs, but reliable.
My dad's Eldorado never gave him any trouble. Maybe it was lighter than the Seville and was easier on the engine. Mostly freeway miles too. I still have it but it's been sitting for....oof, 30 years. Ha, I should make my first video and try to get it started.
Me to I got a 1985 Cadillac Eldorado. Runs perfect not even a check engine light. 130,000 miles
An ex-coworker of mine purchased a brand new 84 Eldorado in 84. This car had the 4.1 v8 engine. He and his wife were driving to Las Vegas from Los Angeles when the car was three months old. He told me he was driving along @ 70 mph approaching Zyzzx road. He said all of a sudden there was a horrible noise and the engine stopped. What happened was the crank shaft broke in two different places. He did not keep the caddy to much longer after that. The best engine for the Eldorado was the Oldsmobile 350 V8 which was installed in the 1979 Eldorado. Cadillac used that engine in just the 79' model year. They fuel injected that engine with the throttle body injection system. But it had a measly 170 hp. Cadillac really screwed up and ruined a great car with that 4.1 V8.
It means a lot hearing from your pop and what he knows... Good vid
I agree, he's been there / done that. I'm glad I could give him a moment to get his word out because it seems these demon engines flew under the trash radar for a long time.
I knew the 4-6-8 were trash, but did not know the 4100 was such junk..... I love how your Pa threw in there "it's just two Vega engines slapped together"... Since I know the Vega had the same basic Aluminum/cast iron mix blunder... And I didnt know the "Norstar" was junk to... Loved the Cadi's from the 80's, but would be best to throw a reliable 350 in one.... @@UsefulEntertainment
@@andrewandres148 he said the 8 6 4 motors ran fine, you just had to unplug the solenoids above each cylinder so it would run on all 8 all the time.
Yup, v8 Vega motor lol.
A lot of cars got engine swaps back in the 80s to my understanding.
Chevy motors, Pontiac, olds, you name it, people would jam them under the hoods of Cadillacs.
Ford FE engines used valve covers which covered the heads and intake too... at least they were good engines
First time watching your videos but i could binge- hear your dad's stories. Wish he had a mike when you made this video.
Lol ill have to do story time videos with him. Its cold out and there's not much to do anyway.
I had the HT 4100 in a 1983 Coupe DeVille. The car was great overall, but the engine was not designed to be in a large rear-wheel drive car like that as it was pretty slow. I fortunately never did have problems with the engine as it was rebuilt before I bought it by someone who must have known what they were doing. I got it to 160k miles before the frame started to rust out on me.
Dude I love this video your dad was like a legend at the Cadillac dealer ship huh?
Yup, everything he said. It was mostly the combination of dissimilar material and the expansion rates that eventually caused seal leaks. I had an absolutely gorgeous 1984 Eldorado Biarritz in black with red leather interior. Bought it from a Caddy mechanic that raided his dealers parts dept and restored it using GM parts, rebuilt the engine. Engine locked up a year after I bought it. I think it was an intake leak. Oil looked like shit. I had 2 of those. The first '84 was an ETC formerly owned by the Pres of Bank of America in Houston. It had stamped steel valve covers. The second one had those aluminum valve covers. Mine had a really weird stinky exhaust when cold with a touch of smoke.
After I got rid of it, about 12 years later way east of Cleveland I found some guy selling a super nice '84 or '85 Eldo balck with black interior. Aluminum wheels. maybe 54-56k orig miles. Absolutely beautiful car. Reminded me of my old one but not a Biarritz. He bought it off some elderly neighbors that split time between there and Florida. While I was checking it out I smelled that same stinky oily exhaust, and said "Nah, sorry, it's a beuatiful car but I'd have to have rocks in my head to buy another one of these." That one had the digital dash too.
One other thing about those cars was they had to make a special version of that transmission with an extra low first gear the engine was so under powered. That would have been a hell of a car with a 368 or Olds 350. The best engine they ever had in those was the early Seville with the fuel injected Olds 350. Back then the Seville was the most expensive Cad even over the Fleetwood. I'd probably take a 350 diesel over the HT4100. I had 3 of those diesels and got all of them running pretty good.
My dad had an 87 coupe de ville with this engine and we drove it from Los Angeles to Queens NYC back in 2003. The car was misfiring from the start and would struggle going up the Colorado mountains. It also almost left us stranded in the middle of nowhere on route 66.
Your Dad was Classic Describing What Happened With These Engines .
We used to call these at the Amoco station I worked at in the mid 1990's the Hook & Tow 4100
I have an 85 seville with a trashed out 4100. I’m looking to swap it out with something more reliable, not too worried about making a bunch of power tho. What would yall recommend? I had an old timer tell be the easiest thing to do would be a 307 from a 1979-1984 toronado, el dorado or riviera. Can’t really find much info but what I have found “seems to” confirm this. Anyway, what do y’all think?
What yall think of the north star engine head bolts 🔩 working loose and blowing headgaskets talk about that
What happened with the earlier Cadillac 4.1 V8s? Lack of heat treatment or improper heat treatment on some components? That really makes the 4.3 V6s look like an upgrade!
(a.k.a. "4300" and "262 CI") (The V6 that the Chevy Astro/GMC Safari regularly had)
I have an 84 Sedan Deville RWD, it runs but fuel pump is bad. Will be quite the adventure to see how long it lasts
You dads story makes the 3.6 high feature look a saint.
Oof timing chain disaster high feature 3.6 lol, my ex had one in her 5th gen Camaro.

He is somewhat right but somewhat being excessive. I have a 1985 Cadillac Eldorado and it has this engine. It is running perfect and strong at 130,000 not even a check engine light.
Did your dad leave the Cadillac dealership before they came up with a fix for the leaking intake gaskets? My parents had an 85 Eldo and it had the 4100 in it. My neighbor was a Cadillac engine mechanic at a Caddy dealership back in the day when these were new cars. He asked me if it had the cam replaced yet and I asked him why they would. He told me about the problems that were associated with the 4100 and said that there was a fix. It was to use special belleville washers on the intake bolts to allow for a bit of movement between the head and intake manifold when it heated up and cooled down. He ended up doing the repairs on it including the cam and lifters that were already starting to show wear and it ran fine for many years after that.
Cool man, Im not sure when he left the dealer but ill have to ask him.
I got very lucky with my 84 Fleetwood.. The HT4100 out lasted 3 transmissions. Had right at 300,000 miles on it when the last transmission went out and I didn't repair it. But the engine ran fine. Maybe it got a new engine very early on. But no complaints from me on it.
I was shocked they used that engine in the Fleetwood. They usually used a more 'traditional' V8 in the Fleetwood like the Cad 368 or 429 or even other divisions engines. The last ones used the 307 or Chev engines.
lol I was thinking of selling my Lincoln to get an 83 Cadillac, but your dad was saying Hulk Hogan did the opposite 😂 might have to stick with the Lincoln unless I want to stick an LS in the caddy
Greetings from Germany! I got a 1984 DeVille with that engine and i love it! Its garbage i already put like 10k into the engine but whatever 😂 Its a nice car and i will always fix it. Mine got 100k miles on it
Haha, greetings man. I'm glad you enjoy it, don't know if I'd run it on the Autobahn but probably rides nice around town 👍
I have troble getting on the Autobahn because it soooo slow. Transmission wants to downshift all the time 😂 Even in town you have trouble getting along. Its impossible to pass someone
I’m saying this just to see what you will say, I own a 1991 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue mark cross edition as a daily driver. I genuinely have had decent reliability with it too
HT = High Technology, my 91 coupe DeVille has the direct descendant of this engine the 4.9, bulletproof,
EWWW I had to look up what a 91 looks like, Its like a K car Newyorker but by Cadillac haha... No offence but we gotta get you another set of wheels. on another note, i have heard slightly better things about the 4.9
Port fuel injection, 200 hp and a whole lot bigger than a k car. Price was right...51k original
I had all those motors. The 368 in an 81 Eldo that was converted. I really liked that car. The biggest issue that I had was the 3 speed auto. The car needed an overdrive. The gas mileage was terrible. 9 in the city 14 highway. the 83 Coupe DeVille with the 4100 lasted 10 years and 123,000 miles before a failed MAT sensor and a spun bearing did it in. I hit 17/25 mpg. My 90' Coupe was my favorite. It had the 200 HP 4.5. It was ridiculous off the line. It was faster off the line than my 88 Corvette. The gas mileage wasn't as good as the 83.
Worked at a Pontiac Cadillac dealership during these "horror years". Swear to God, the owner rented an off site shop, put two heavy line techs in it, paid them a premium on flat rate, hired a retired gentleman part time to run parts, etc. why, because the main shop was literally filled with Cadillacs with the hoods on the roof and empty engine compartments and did not want customers seeing this!!! Of course, salesmen kept selling them. Ahh, memories.😊
What did Cadillac replace the 4100 with? Could you easily replace it with a small block Olds 350/403?
yes it would go right in its place, wether its a b body rwd or an e body fwd, the buicks and olds versions used olds 307s or buick 3.8s, it all swaps around
Makes you wonder how many resources total were wasted in order to rush and save the resources used in 1 or 2 mpg. Far more than was saved, just like with the crap they do now start/stop and cylinder deactivation. Nobody is allowed to figure in that it takes the equivalent of losing 15 mpg to gain 10. Including all the extra parts, research, increased maintenance and shorter engine life. Creating all the replacement parts and shipping them as well which in the case of the 4100 entire engines is absolutely massive.
Never bought another Caddy again after selling my 83 Fleetwood in the mid 80's. Only bought Lincolns and never looked back. Too painful.
I worked on tons of those turds back in the 80's and early 90's. They were total crap. I don't think any of them lasted more than 2 or 3 years. They ate head gaskets like a fat guy at a Chinese buffet. I don't care how many fanbois want to make apologies for the 4100, they are not even worth using as a urinal.
HT= hook& tow
I wonder how many owners demanded anything other than a 4100 as a replacement engine; I'm sure the V6, or a 305, or even a 454 would have cost less to make than one of these. It would be interesting to see what Caddy did to make the later 4100s, as well as the 4.5 and 4.9 more solid.
If it were that easy I would have dropped in almost ANYTHING to replace that engine. You'd have to change the trans and a lot of other stuff. Exhaust, cooling, mounts, AC bracketing. If you were really into the car it could be done. A lot of work.
9 some of the cars had beautiful bodies, we had a El Dorado barits on a maple fireworks white top white leather red carpet bows dual power seat recliners true spoke wheels it had every option what was the fix pull the ht4100 out, what do you put back in? Did anybody come up with a solution?
the dealers had to replace the cam while the motor was in the car if it was just the cam that went bad but the other times they just replaced the engines.
I have one that has 170,000 miles on it in a 83 coupe de ville that was my grandfather's. I guess he got one of the few good ones. Even so, you have to pray that it gets up to hiway speed before trying to merge into traffic. I'm thinking about an LS swap!
cool man, an ls swap in a fwd caddy would be interesting to say the least
@@joshuasingh3182 LS swaps are pretty cool. There are some videos of that on youtube. I have been considering a 350 swap on mine. People also do olds 307 swap pretty easily.
I found a cherry '87 DeVille with a 4100 in it @165,xxx miles. Im sooooo curious as to wonder what was done to it to have reached those miles(rebuild, maintenance, etc). Started out asking 5500, but now its down to 3995. If ut creeps down to about the 3500 mark, i just may get it at least for the body/interior. I can always replace the motor, right?

I remember Oldsmobile made 260 c.u motor in 77' very reliable. I commend Cadillac for the cylinder deactivatation techology state of the art for the time. I guess the engine block and heads design was a failure. I think if they used the 260 motor design , it probably would be a winner?
The problem with the V4-6-8 at the time was that the analog computer technology (processing speed) wasn't up to the task of modulating the displacement well enough to transition between the modes. There were drivability or performance issues like shuddering and surges between the modes during cylinder activation/deactivation. Technology of the time didn't support the practical application of the concept. Years later in the early 2000's MDS was becoming mainstream like the 5.7 Hemi.

I sold more HT4100 cars than I can count. They were quiet when cold and the minute they warmed up they got noisy. I knew a salesman that used to hide in the back when his customers came back into the dealership. The motors would knock after 500 miles. I loved those cars because it made the "Cadillac" cheaper than the olds and buicks at the auction and I used to snap them up cheap and sell em to the natives in Flushing....ah you brought back good and bad memories from the good old days lol. That motor was a little better than the 4 6 8 motor from I think '81 wow...
Ok now thats a funny story, im gomna have to tell my dad that. Choice words clientele btw haha. Whats good with you guys.
You gotta find one now and let stuntman give it hell!
The V8-6-4 was a better motor than the dreaded HT4100. Only thing you have to do with the V8-6-4 is disconnect the cylinder deactivation system.
@@atx-cvpi_99 I agree. The 4-6-8 was the last REAL Cadillac engine, the 368. It wasn't a powerhouse but at least durable. Like many have said, just deactivate the cylinder drop out. I think there was a way through the climate control panel or the mileage readout to go into the program mode. You could do it from inside the car.
What? The V8-6-4 is way better than that pile of junk 😂 just remove that terrible technology and that thing is solid as hell as just a V8
