About The Film:
This short film "Luke Cage", is a powerful and thought-provoking story that delves into the complex dynamics between manipulative parents and their adult children. Join us on this emotional journey as we shed light on the hardships faced by those trapped in these relationships. Through captivating storytelling and compelling characters, I aim to create awareness, foster empathy, and spark meaningful conversations about the impact of manipulative parents on their adult children.
Synopsis:
In this short film, a young black man Luke Cage decides to confront his emotionally abusive father on Father's Day. As the night unfolds, Luke grapples with the realization that his father used their physical differences to manipulate and control him when he was younger. However, now that the son has grown taller and stronger, he no longer feels intimidated physically by his father. Through this process, he comes to understand that his father's behavior stemmed from his insecurities and unwillingness to change. Due to this trauma caused by his father, his powers start to falter as he confronts the relationship head-on. As the night comes to an end he realizes that no matter how strong he may be on the outside, the damage his father left on the inside still lingers.
Story Inspiration:
The short film I created was inspired by an episode of "Luke Cage" on Netflix. Luke Cage is a Marvel hero who has bulletproof skin, enhanced strength, and endurance as well as an enhanced healing factor. The only way you can hurt Luke Cage is via the internals of his body. In a specific episode, Luke Cage's father is portrayed as a preacher named James Lucas. James Lucas was a well-respected member of the community and had a strong influence on Luke's upbringing. During his youth, his father often would try and influence control over Luke by abusing the power dynamic of being Luke's father and himself. However, their relationship becomes even more strained when Luke discovers that his father was previously involved in illegal activities, including accepting bribes, protecting criminals, and even finding out his father has another son with another woman. This revelation causes Luke to question his own identity and moral compass, as he struggles to reconcile his feelings for his father. Despite their differences, Luke ultimately realizes that his father's actions were driven by a desire to protect his family and the community despite his execution. This realization leads Luke to forgive his father and accept his role as a hero in Harlem.
Our Goal(s):
Our goal is $5,500 but more support allows us to compensate our team who is putting massive amounts of effort into helping tell this story as well as cover the total costs of different departments on our production.
If we raise $6,500 it will allow us to pay our crew and actors a little extra to show how much they are appreciated and cared for.
If we raise $7,500 it will allow us to cover the cost of submitting to even more film festivals to share our vision with the rest of the world.
If we raise $10,000 it will allow us to do all of the above as well as give us a bit more budget to polish the film in both coloring, editing, and even in the art department for the sets that we will be shooting in.
