Elliott would have been proud to hear this. Such a beautiful recreation. "The potential you'll be, that you'll never see. The promises you only make.."
Even after 10 listens of this beautiful song, it continues to be enchanting and quite a joy to explore. Keith Harvey described this gem quite eloquently.
A soft and gently sung lyric about alcohol's seduction and enthrallment, of lost and broken promise. Elliot Smith has earned his place in the pantheon of truly great lyricists.
Her voice is absolutely enchanting. I love this song with all my heart, and now that I've figured out the chords used on the piano, I can only feverishly dream that I'd ever be close to be as such a wonderful singer as madame Peyroux. ♥
Such lush chords, understated and slow, backed by a tantalizingly sparse arrangement. Madeleine Peyroux delivers sublime beauty to this nice Elliott Smith tune. C'est terrifique!
What a nice version! I'm a long time Elliott fan. This cover would have fit in to the soundtrack of WEEDS season 3 or something. I always admired whoever put together the soundtrack for the shows. This has a nice pace to it, lovely voice, retro vocals and piano. It's just so damn classy!!!
i was just arguing with people about covers of this song and how they completely pale in comparisson to the original. In a way i ate my words. This cover is brilliant. What it does, is take the saong, musically and vocally, and shifts it slightly to the left. its kind of a re-interperatation. Elliots version was very "inner" whereas this opens up the song more. Hard to describe in ways, but brilliant work. Such a hard song to cover, done exceptionally. Prefer the original, but this has a place!
Just awesome ... you know Madeleine, how many fans you have down here in Brazil ?? Think you can already count them by the million ... don't you believe ?? A million just within Rio and São Paulo ... yeah ... I'm telling you ...
My anticipation for the next line to come, she surprises me. I'm a ridiculously huge Smith fan but I prefer this version. It was never a Smith song I gave much attention, he's written far better, but Peyroux would make me listen to this more than I do.
What a gorgeous cover. Like when I found the original, I'm listening four or five times a day to it. Great video work as well. makes the mood of the song just right.
i lover Madeleine Peyroux but its a different song when she sings it, when i was a teenager Elliot spoke to me so much, this rendition of it speaks to me now as an adult. i Ijust wish i had more of Elliot, such a tourted soul though... i hope he found peace
gah, thats exactly what i say. Too many people bring the negativity when it comes to covers. When people do covers theyre not trying to be exactly like the original artist, nor are they trying to be better. That's not how music works. Glad i'm not the only one who thinks this way!
I believe that's because people compare with Elliot Smith's former version, that have other atmosphere, quite different in fact. But to me both are nice
I really enjoy this version! Compared to the original and the Civil Wars rendition, I have think this is my favorite. But I am biased because I love jazz, and the slower tempo and full band gives a rich and more bluesy spin to the original.
absolutely. The singing and arrangement are exquisite. Its on the level of the Byrd's covers of Dylan, or even better, Hendrix. Even better than that. Its so true to the original song, and yet it has it's own voice. This is true artistry..
It's not about making a "better" or "equal" version of/to the original: it's about creating a unique and artistic rendition of an original. What do you think made Shakespeare famous? Peyroux does a fabulous job with this Elliott Smith song.
this version is nice especially the the jazzp piano part. it's really difficult to compare it to Elliott's, but as for me, i can say it doesen't touch me, unlike Elliott's version, which brings tears to my eyes. it's the kind of covers that you say about: nice interpretation, that's all.

I completely agree with you...there is a completely differing destination and awareness that sucks you in to this E.Smith Cover by Peyroux.....stunningly surreal, drifty and beautiful. I love the original , it goes without saying, but sometimes it is too introspective and insular...whereas this takes you far away to create your own identity with the song :)
there is something so sensual about this version. and yet it's so solemn, and lonely. it makes me feel lonely but it has a really sexy element to it. i know what i mean..
Lyrics : Drink up, baby Stay up all night Things you could do You won't but you might The potential you'll be You'll never see Promises you'll only make Drink up with me now And forget all about Pressure of days Do what I say And I'll make you okay And drive them away Images stuck in your head People you've been before That you don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still Drink up, baby Look at the stars. And I'll kiss you again Between the bars Where i'm seeing you there With your hands in the air Waiting to finally be caught Drink up one more time And I'll make you mine And keep you apart Deep in my heart Separate from the rest Where I like you the best Keep the things you forgot The people you've been before That you don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still.
well insultatron4000, not to trash your opinion, but i see lots of emotion in this interpretation. kind of a melancholy, overcast feeling with a touch of wonder and glamour. her voice is not droning at all and there's a full flush of sound, it is not a "2D music piece". they're good jazz artists. but what do i know, i was only taught by a jazz musician who traveled the country with his band.
you people can be quite rude and quite fanboyish.. I love this version. Yes Elliot wrote it, and made it what it is. This version is a cover, it has artistic license. Its not supposed to replace the original, its just the same thing from a different perspective. I love the jazzy feel and soothing voice. Please learn to open your eyes people instead of being close-minded idiots.
He hasn't cut a record in years because the last two were posthumously released. His songwriting abilities were quite good and considering he went up for an oscar for a different song...
I think you should allow grace, not embarrasment...we all fall into new artists and music throughout our lives. I congratulate her honesty. I know Elliot would have :)
how it could be possible to make this song sadder, i don't understand, yet she has....that's a remarkable voice.
Elliott would have been proud to hear this. Such a beautiful recreation. "The potential you'll be, that you'll never see. The promises you only make.."
This woman has one of the smoothest voices I've ever heard! Great instrumentals accompanying her as well.
Even after 10 listens of this beautiful song, it continues to be enchanting and quite a joy to explore. Keith Harvey described this gem quite eloquently.

I LOVE THIS VERSION! The blues-ey-ness of it is so powerful and sudductive, and I think it's the best cover I've heard of the song.
Her voice is absolutely enchanting.

This is the best cover ever made out of all covers ever made..
I'm in the "it's nearly impossible to cover Elliott Smith" camp, and this would be an exception. I think this is an absolutely brilliant cover.
I've been listening to this song since 2007, never gets old
Such lush chords, understated and slow, backed by a tantalizingly sparse arrangement. Madeleine Peyroux delivers sublime beauty to this nice Elliott Smith tune. C'est terrifique!
I thought I was going to hate this before I heard it, but it's lovely..stays true to the original with it's own magic. Very well done cover.
I can't stop listening to this song....so good.
Remind me of Rabat in 2012 .. cold weather when the Streets look like ours. Love and tenderness. Thank You
Absolutely breathtaking song. I love both versions.

The best ever representation of loneliness combined with the feeling of nostalgia for Paris.
This song pulls me into stasis. This melancholy tune makes me unsure how I feel, but for some reason I gravitate to its vibe.
Just awesome ... you know Madeleine, how many fans you have down here in Brazil ??
Think you can already count them by the million ... don't you believe ??
A million just within Rio and São Paulo ... yeah ... I'm telling you ...
Heaven in under three and a half minutes.
I'm still listening to this song at random🎉 I remember buying a demo at Park Place Mall in Tucson Az when I was in middle school 😂
Damn, this is fantastic. Cheers to Peyroux for doing this...there should be more jazz covers of Smith tunes
I really love the feel of this song it has so much emotion. The way her voice moves is just so awesome. I'm speech less each time
i agree. All of the covers so far have a great deal of respect and care put into them, you can see it and hear it.
wow her voice is ridiculously amazing.
My anticipation for the next line to come, she surprises me. I'm a ridiculously huge Smith fan but I prefer this version. It was never a Smith song I gave much attention, he's written far better, but Peyroux would make me listen to this more than I do.
Amazing! She completely owns the song and manages to add to it.
Madelaine ....mi preferida. Bello, muy bello!!!! y enormemente dulce y dolorosa su voz
Billy lives! Amazing!!!
What a gorgeous cover. Like when I found the original, I'm listening four or five times a day to it. Great video work as well. makes the mood of the song just right.
I am so in love with this to the point of tears

This is a very nice version of the song of Elliott Smith, this is great, R.I.P. Elliott Smith
I don't understand why there are dislikes. beautiful tune
I believe that's because people compare with Elliot Smith's former version, that have other atmosphere, quite different in fact. But to me both are nice
Eduardo P. I think you are right
Best version of this song EVER!
Your voice and style make me think of Billie Holiday. Great voice, great rendition.
Simple and beautiful. Pure, yep that's it - pure.
Un chanson merveilleux - et pour lequel elle a une voix parfait. An amazing song - for which she has a perfect voice.

my ex girlfriend used to love madeleine peyroux. with me being a huge elliott smith fan this was a strange yet pleasant discovery.
She sings like Ella. Absolutely beautiful.

Wow! Best version ever!!!
What a hard song to cover! Great job! Bravo!
Love this version (if not the video - sorry). It brings out a real passive-aggressive menace in the lyric.
"I'll keep them still..." indeed.
Wow. She's got Elliott in her heart there.
love it
she's amazing love her and elliot

Lyrics :
Drink up, baby
Stay up all night
Things you could do
You won't but you might
The potential you'll be
You'll never see
Promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now
And forget all about
Pressure of days
Do what I say
And I'll make you okay
And drive them away
Images stuck in your head
People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up, baby
Look at the stars.
And I'll kiss you again
Between the bars
Where i'm seeing you there
With your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time
And I'll make you mine
And keep you apart
Deep in my heart
Separate from the rest
Where I like you the best
Keep the things you forgot
The people you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still.
Smith my friend. Elliott Smith... The one that, thanks to him, this cover exists. ;)
beautiful.
Temaso! Me encanta! Me hace sentir la composición musical en su máximo explendor!
No, I like the vid with the song; it works. Many scenarios would, but this video works. I liked it.
sounds way different but it has that jazz feel. same words, different type of haunting.
good god, this is good.
standing ovation here!!!!!!!!
She is a jazz singer, odds are good she knows one of the famous jazz singer of all time ;)

this song/cover make me feel SO sad!!!!!
Good job! As a huge elliott smith fan I was prepared for a hack job. I'm glad to say I was proved wrong.
Nice and elegant
My mate Dave told me about her a few minutes ago she gets my vote any time
Lindíssima!
beautiful voice
Linda linda... a voz de Madelaine completa a música e consegue fazer sua versão ser melhor que o original de Elliott Smith.
lovely version ☼
He hasn't cut a record in years because the last two were posthumously released. His songwriting abilities were quite good and considering he went up for an oscar for a different song...
Liked the voice ... awesome
quel beau grain de voix!
I think you should allow grace, not embarrasment...we all fall into new artists and music throughout our lives. I congratulate her honesty. I know Elliot would have :)
Couldn't agree more.
Thank you foot introducing me to this Tricky!
