I really enjoy watching your videos. I have just gotten back into sewing after years of not touching my machine. I am happy to say with the help of new machines I am finding my joy again 😀! Best wishes from Australia 😎.

It was fun watching you organize your fabric. In Michigan,USA I have all my knits rolled and stacked on shelves, they snuggle into each other so they don't tumble when I pull one out. We live in AZ the other part of the year and I now have enough fabric here that I need to do something to organize it. Once I decide how to best store it, I will share a picture with you.

If you put a piece of tissue between the fabrics they pull out of the stack much easier. I need to get back to organizing my room as well. My hubby calls it "the black hole" because stuff goes into another dimension when it passes the door.
I like the binder idea. May give that a try. 50 years of sewing may take more than one book!

I've just been doing the same Ruan, but I've used note cards instead of paper. I've not organised the fabric yet, but think I'm going to number my boxes, so I can go straight to it. It is surprising what you find when you do it, but it's been great timing for the #Sewfrugal22 challenge👍😀

    I have enjoyed this video.
I need to get a better storage system. I currently have 3 antique dressers and have utilized the drawers. I would get different furniture but two of them hold a ton of sentimental value. Another isn’t sentimental but is practical and has a good top for my printer. I also have a corner cabinet with shelves and doors that isn’t practical for fabric so much but displays some treasures and high on top sits my projector, if I ever get it hooked up and learn to use it. I like the downloadable tags and will use them, thanks, I had planned to just write a note and pin it to each fabric but this will be much nicer.

    We’ll done! Looks very organised.
I’ve catalogued my stash in a Word document that also records my planned makes. For the stash I have a three column table. In the first column I record where I bought the fabric, it’s composition (if known), length and width and how much it cost me. In the middle column I list ideas for using it, and I pop a photo of the fabric in the final column.
I have a similar Word document in table format recording all my patterns, organised by type, with a photo and the fabric requirements and notions.
I am a bit nerdy about my sewing. 😊
The good thing about storing the info on the computer is that it takes up less space!

Am slowly using stash - made items for two sisters recently for fabric I thought I would not use so makes me feel better. I use Trello for Patterns but love your file. Costing exercise sounds a good idea. I have started a diary for all my makes this year , including mending & alterations - quite impressive. Keep on with the videos, they really cheer me up.

I absolutely love how you have organized your fabrics
I also am a look at touch person
I don't want a list on the computer so impersonal
    I am not technical person
    Same with my patterns
I have just last spring redone my sewing room and my husband built me a beautiful counter faux marble top to have my machines on with 3 drawers at one end
Top drawer is narrow with like a cutlery tray type organizer in it
    Beside the machine
Bobbins and stitch picker etc.things I need at my right hand
The next 2 drawers are wide enough for 2 patterns side by side and the drawers are 24 inches deep
So they have dividers and I have my patterns in them
like in a fabric store all in there
In catagories of tops and dresses bottoms and coats and then some that are coordinating the pattern has pants and a top maybe a jacket
My patterns are also all big four
Here in Canada that's what I can get and I don't have a print shop for indie patterns so I just find something similar and make the look lol
But I can browse through the patterns and have a list of what I need when I go to the fabric store
I love my sewing room it's my happy place
I tidy everday when I am done even if the project isn't complete
I can't work in a mess that I am looking for things like stitch picker etc.
My stash is in a lovely cupboard but I don't buy any fabric generally without a pattern in mind
So I don't end up with fabrics that I will have sitting and no projects in mind
I also need to touch my fabrics when buying I haven't done online
I have about 20 or so fabrics right now and I don't let it get to big
You are lucky to have a large stash to shop from
Looking forward to seeing you sew through those especially the double gauze
Happy sewing looking forward to getting inspired and ideas
    Take care

Hi Ruan- I love watching your channel and am getting ready to start my own, so am in the midst of organizing (I lose focus in the midst of sewing room chaos !!). I have one space (guest/sewing) so very limited for storage, just one closet and decorative baskets, so keep much of my bits & bobs etc in bins like yours and baskets. Fabric is in an Ikea unit, mostly by season/capsule and patterns loaded into open storage boxes that are in the same closet.
In my "past life" I was in project management so decided to bring some of that to my process. One tool that I LOVE is Trello which is a free image-based database. I have different columns set up for fabric, hundreds (oh my) of patterns, projects etc. It's fairly easy to set up- when I purchase fabric, I use the online image (or my camera) to add a card for the fabric and pop in yardage/care etc. Trello allows me to not have to pull everything out until I am closer to making decisions because I can sort thru patterns and yardage on my computer, although I still have to touch everything at the end of the day! It's not an overnight process, but I'm finding that I have more time to actually sew!
BTW- love the containers that you have used for your fabric!

I highly advise using Trello for your patterns. Paper patterns I take a photo of front and back and upload them. Stops me getting the same pattern twice! PDF patterns are saved in boards, with images and all the documents. Means if I am out shopping, I can access the list of things I need to get. It’s also a way of connecting with my sewing when I can’t sew… travelling (hah!), or in bed when I can read instructions!

Also, once the fabric is washed and ironed I attach (pin) a little post it note to it which details were I got it from/date/fibre content/quantity/price etc - works well. It’s so satisfying to be able see the fabric and access it without too much trouble. I have to add that I have retired from work, so I’ve all the time in the world to do this! 👍🏻😁x

Love watching organising videos. I sorted out all my traced off PDF patterns yesterday, ditched the ones that were too small or I'll never make again. Today I got my two large wheeled storage boxes out of the garage and went through my master PDFs threw away the ones I'll never use again, organised the rest in companies, it felt good. In winter I put my summer fabric in vacuum bags so they reduce in size and store them in the bottom of my wardrobe then at change of seasons I reverse the fabrics. So vacuum bags would work well for your thicker fabrics.

Hi Ruan, yes I’d be really interested in a costing exercise video - I’ve always wandered about the hidden costs - electricity, things that’ve been in my stash for some time etc., so I’d be really interested in seeing your approach to this.
Great organisation, very neat. What a difference! I use Trello to keep a log of my fabrics and my patterns and that works for me, but I also keep notebooks with notes on every new pattern that I make and I attach a clip of the fabric to the page (the notebooks get very bulky and interesting 😆). It’s a really great resource to revisit when I make the pattern a second time as I note whether it needs additional fitting adjustments, how the fabric washes after, say, 5 washes etc. I also note whether I liked sewing the garment or whether it’s a pattern I never want to try again 😂. At the end of the day it’s finding a system that works for you and your space. I now feel very guilty as my once pristine sewing/craft room, now looks like one of those hoarder type rooms 😳 - I’ve just got far too much stuff. Deffo time to declutter me thinks!

Now I’m feeling guilty as I look round my room that is a disaster zone. I do have all my fabrics in boxes but some are in here, some are in the laundry room and none of them are catalogued. I WILL try to organise myself because I often sit and waste a couple of hours thinking, “ what can I sew” then deciding on something and not being able to find the right fabric for it - like I’ve done this afternoon ( and catching up on blogs). I’m just great at prevarication.😜 I think you’ve inspired me!

Hi Ruan! You've made great progress with your stash! I've done just like Dawn, below. If each of your boxes is numbered, then the fabric can go wherever there's room; you're not confined to relegating fabric types into specific boxes. I use cheapo cardboard letter size file boxes; no need for visibility. I keep each sample on a notecard; each category is on a ring - top-weight wovens, bottom weight, print knits, solid knits, etc. Enjoy! I use Evernote for pattern inventory; I'm behind on updating that, though.

I am so inspired. I have printed out four stash cards and I want to get going. My closet looks pretty much like yours and I still need to find some containers. In the end I suspect that they will pay for themselves because you will use your stash and the fabric is more protected from staining and snagging. Good work.

Hi Ruan, Love the organization of your stash! Just a idea, on how to get a fabric out of the box without messing up all the other fabrics. I had seen something like this to organize clothes, here in the States we have thin plastic cutting boards for the kitchen. Thin enough to slide 1 under the fabric, and 1 over the fabric, just pull out the fabric in the middle of your plastic cutting mats. They have them on Amazon ( Flexible Plastic Cutting boards). Hope this might help keep your stash neat and organized 🙂 Liz from South Florida ☀️😎

Oops don't know how that happened 😂 must start Sewing faster and buying slower 🤣🤣 Luckily l started a word document when l went back to sewing in 2017 and put a picture of the fabric with the details next to it and did the same for the patterns. Oh Ruan, you do make laugh! When you opened those doors to the wardrobe I just couldn't stop laughing. It was like one of those stalls I remember seeing as a child when I went to the market with my mum it was called Ada's (I'm old, 64) and all the women were having a good old rummage for fabric. I'm like you or I use to be like you at organising things but, these days I just can't be bothered.
My room is tidy enough, but it could be tidier should we say. Can I have another look in your cupboard in 12 months time? LOL
Sometimes though I not sure that when doing sewing as a hobby it can be a tidy hobby. Although when you are organised it is a nice feeling... Love your jibber jabber videos especially when there is always children or the cat trying to get in. There is definitely no peace when you have children and pets is there? Hi Ruan I’m feeling your pain my cupboard is a wardrobe that I have shelved but those shelves are so messy lol 😂 it might be a good idea to bring the boxes forward and use the space behind for the heavy weight jerseys. You could also have a summer, spring, autumn and winter box along side a project and a wip box and have the current and next season to the front along with the project and wip boxes for easy access. I love your binder idea and will be doing that too but haven’t got enough of a stash to do the season thing so something to aspire to lol 😂

Great work Ruan. You should be proud of your efforts. I need a system of cataloging. At the moment I write on a piece of paper the name of the fabric, where I bought it, dimensions, original price per metre and total I paid. I pin this to the washed and folded (not ironed) fabric and put it upright in a draw based on fabric type. At the end of every project I record the date completed, pattern, size, fabric details, cost of everything (excluding labour) and comments such as changes I made or changes I would do next time, along with a stapled snippet of fabric. I spread the cost of the pattern over multiple makes if I know I will make again. (That’s the accountant in me). 😁 I like your page of fabric info. Do you have a plan for what to do with the list as fabric gets made up, just cross that one out or cut it out and staple up a new page?
