I loved the creativity of the skydiving sequence - and I really appreciated that the horror in "Stowaway" has nothing to do with the aliens being evil or hostile. Instead, the horror simply comes from being trapped in precisely the wrong situation (repeated injuries + nanobots that don't know how to repair a human body).
IDK, I feel like the creators of Stowaway struggled a little bit with the time they had for the segment and the found footage style. As a team they don't really do short runtimes, they're better known for slow burns and a lot of attention to detail, so it didn't surprise me much that they'd have a bit of trouble squishing a story down into 20-30 minutes and using the intentional jankiness/glitchyness of found footage well. The vibe and the horror were really good though, they definitely put some work into that though, and I'm kind of hoping this leads to them trying their hand at sci-fi horror with a longer runtime. 'Live and Let Dive' had a good premise and really interesting creature design, but in vibe it really felt like it was in the vein of 'A Ride in the Park' from 2 or the Kids vs Aliens segment in whichever one that was in. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing - I feel like every VHS entry has had one segment that's 'here is a premise, and now everyone is running and yelling'.
@@dartigens10 If it helps, I think there was more storytelling going on than just running and yelling in the finale of Live and Let Dive - notice that the aliens keep opening their heads and scanning the humans before killing them. And then our main character gets scanned, and he's the one they choose to abduct instead of kill. A neat extra detail.
Tbf I've never been able to watch tusk because knowing the plot already and of the body horror and the poster disturbing me enough on it's own but Justin needs to seek help lol his takes on body horror go too crazy
Stowaway was definitely my favorite and the one that freaked me out the best. None of the real horror has to do with the aliens themselves; they didn't hurt or threaten the humans, just collected some small animal specimens. The nanobots also seem to show that they want to keep all the animals healthy. But since she didn't let the alien see her, she's stuck on a minimum 4.5 year journey. It's unclear if she will be able/allowed to die of suffocation or starvation, or if each time the nanobots are going to try and heal her, so she might spend all of that time dying again and again. And since each of the strings seem identified with a specific animal, she'll become more and more mutated the longer the trip goes on. VHS 99 is good, but Viral is hot garbage so you can totally skip it.
The Dream Girl segment reminds me of this episode of family guy when Stewie & Brian reveals that Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus is a robotic android & that stewie reprogrammed her & she became hostile robot.
Stowaway is my favorite its made by the girl who is in hush and midnight mass and all those films, its so brutal to know ur gonna be suffering till that thing wakes up. And justin long made fur babies, he also starred in a movie called tusk which he was turned into a walrus or seal thats where u can see the inspiration for that short film. i loved this vhs cant w a it to see where they take it from here
Wow!! This might be one of the best reaction videos I've ever seen. Thank you so much for this and glad you enjoyed Dream Girl. Cyborg Carrie (great descriptor) is exactly what we were going for! And yes, Tara's manager was involved in creating her (if you know what I mean). Thank you!
@@Tonne1921 Well, probably not to the extent. But when he says "She's one nudge away from waking up", he's referring to the part that she's getting sentient, displaying emotions. She could go out of hand! And clearly, she does. You never know what can happen when AI goes rogue!
I'd imagine a good theme for the next movie would be cryptids. Fits the found footage angle, interlude around either bigfoot or the mothman. Plenty of cryptids to explore that the franchise could give their own take on such as the loch ness monster, jersey devil, Chupacabra, etc.
Rattma from '94 was an awesome original cryptid. The Medusa from '99 was kinda just a ripoff of the succubus from the first film and i guess neither really count as "cryptids" like rattma.
13:56 notice that the actress who potrayed Tara didn't act panic when she encounter someone stalking her like human beings but instead just welcoming Arnab.

Live and Let Dive was so wild. The real-life dangers of a skydive gone wrong are NOT shied away from, and that would've been a great horror movie on its own. But then they add a UFO attack to it? Easily the most creative entry in the series so far.
The pop star/robot one makes me think of the Family Guy episode where Stewie met Hannah Montana & discovered she was a robot & then she destroyed like half the city. 😂😂 My mind immediately went to VHS … with the “I like you.” 😂😂 13:53
34:27 - correct, as is sometimes said, it's not the fall that kills you so much as the landing. Sudden, rapid acceleration or deceleration does extremely bad things to pretty much any living body, and it only gets nastier at higher speeds. Physics was the real villain of Stowaway. (The Expanse has a cold open in Season 3 that shows the effects of a sudden deceleration pretty explicitly (it is *extremely gory*, and for obvious reasons not available on UA-cam) but there's probably also plenty of videos from actual doctors explaining what rapid acceleration or sudden stops at high speed (or changes of direction) can cause.) I get why they've changed to the pseudo-documentary framing from the old 'people found some VHS tapes' framing - it's sheer necessity. Not many people have VHS tapes at all anymore, and if you happen to run across one now, it's more work to find something that can actually play them than anything else unless you're an archivist or collector of rare media (or know someone who is). They kind of needed to come up with a new way to do the frame narratives, and while I don't know that it works, it's more believable. VHS: Home Invasion would work, or VHS: CCTV - one of the few things that does still use VHS a lot is very, very old security camera systems. (And, like many people, I've heard urban legends about boxes or dumpsters full of unmarked VHS tapes or tapes with cryptic labels that turn out to be old CCTV footage being thrown out but there's one weird tape...)
This V/H/S movie was amazing, I felt the franchise came back to life again since the last two movies were not so good. Good plots, good jumpscares, and especial mention to the dog lady actress and her masterful performance.

It really is interesting how the alien in Stowaway seem to actually be helpful beings who want to collect samples of animals so they know how to properly help them. It's just that they don't know what a human is, so the nano bots programming is just using what they have in their data to "help"
