Andy McKee performs "Mythmaker" live backstage in Nashville, TN at the Belcourt Theatre for Guitar World's Acoustic Nation. More at www.acousticnation.com
This never gets old.....probably my favorite Andy McKee song. Having played finger style longer than Andy has been alive (way longer... ha), I find listening to this simutaneously euphoric and depressing.. ha. No way you could ever cover this the way he plays it... just one of those songs you have to tip your hat in awe. Geez he is good.
Yup, I'm 57 and been playing (not professionally, just love playing the acoustic guitar) since I was 12. Taught myself how to fingerpick by using one of my brother's old Baxter guitar instruction manuals. Back in the mid 80s, just after I was just discharged from the Navy, I came across a recording of Michael Hedges' "Aerial Boundries". I hadn't seen very many acoustic guitarists that carried on MH's legacy and style until I came across the artists @ Candyrat records.... it was like a MHs-gasm (that actually a word? well it is now! :D ) Like you I'm in awe of these artists, especially Andy. Who'd have thought combining MH's "tapping" with bass guitar "slapping"??? SMDH
Been a few months since I've watched this, and I find myself just as bewildered today as I was then. It would take ages for me to be able to play this proficiently, let alone write something this intricate. Andy is a treasure. I hope he has a new album coming out soon!
Thank you acoustic nation for sharing this song with us (the 3rd world). It's 'cause people like you that we can enjoy this kind of awesome artistic expression on countries like mine. Thank y'all so much! Cheers from Argentina!
Josue Lorenzo Seee pero no tengo una camara copada para filmar mis temas. Soy cordobes. suscribite a mi canal (aunque hace bocha que no subo un pomo pero we...), ahora me suscribo al tuyo
This is just amazing. Great job by the audio / cameraman for really capturing Andy joyfully ripping this tune off perfectly... and also not filming his/her own reflection in the guitar body.
andy was rocking the huge beard back before it became the go-to style of every guy with a man-bun, and now is going for the stubble look. 8 years from now, the world will follow.
Every time I try and play along I find myself stopping half way through because I realize there is no way to improve on the beautiful sounds coming from your fingers.
Guys, if you get the chance to check Andy out live, you should definitely take the chance. His concert is truly amazing, he's funny too. During his transitions between his tunes, he really likes to talk to the audience. Like telling some stories about his past or background information about the song. You only can love this guy! ;)
Killrbunnii John Butler ? Are you joking ? XD He is not even close to Andy Mckee ! Tommy Emmanuel is still the best guitarist in my opinion, but it's a completely different style.
A virtuoso. Genius like this is seen maybe once in a generation. Thanks Andy (and all the other artists @ Candyrat) for carrying on Michael Hedges legacy. He's having a LOT of fun playing this too. "Funkified" finger-picking.....only Andy McKee. I wonder what this would sound like on a 6 string bass? He's using a lot of bass guitar techniques ("slapping" among others) in this piece.
Andy talks about it in one of his vids. him and don Ross both like the design. you'll notice the bridge is slanted too. I forget exactly why he said. something to about it changing the scale length
When I saw him live some years ago, I asked what that was about as well, and he said that the most distinct advantage is that it's actually better at retaining the tuning and sound of the guitar. ... or did he say it was easier to play... either one of the two, or maybe both. It's been a while.
Those are called fanned or temperament frets. Those frets are designed that way to evenly maintained and level and tuning, intonation and tension of all strings across the entire fret thus for better playability and sound quality. Those frets are expensive but its worth it. At first you anyone might feel a little awkward by it but they will get use to it in no time.
Peter Doody Ernie Ball Aluminium Bronze Medium gauge (They sound great but to be honest most of that sound is coming from the $18000 Greenfield guitar)
It's been five years since you posted that message....have you been practicing at least one hour a day since then??? It not, you can start now. I'll check in on you in three years. Do you have any idea what you could accomplish within three years, at an hour a day, with Knowing what direction you want to go?!?!?!?
A lot of guitars have jumbo sized bodies too that aren't considered baritones. A jumbo guitar is great for strumming too if you have a heavier hand and want to play loud. I think for it to truly be considered a baritone it really isn't the body, it needs to to have a longer scale length. I love how this one looks and sounds! It turns purple when the light hits it
The quality of the percussive sound is almost entirely dependent on the method of recording(pickups, etc) and also technique. Not so much the guitar, you by no means need to drop $7k on a Greenfield LOL
What an energetic performance👍👍... And what a melody 🥰

a trick : watch series on flixzone. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies recently.
@Knox Sergio Yup, been watching on flixzone} for years myself =)
This is a true genius at work.
Smiling at the camera and all those grimaces. Andy's just awesome.
Haha yes I like his highly animated eyebrows also. Just great to see him really feel the music; it makes the listener go along with it as well.
i've been listening and watching Andy for years, this may be his best work. It's amazing. Thank you so much Andy.
His guitar is truly an extension of his mind... wow.
Andy McKee is pure genius. What an unbelievable gift. -Mark Dante Troiano
I can not believe how this guy can compose such incredibly beautiful and yet signifcantly technical pieces, what a talent!

this is my favorite rendition of this song so far out of all the live performances and the studio version

He actually feels the music. Andy is the real deal.
How are there dislikes on this?? I mean that would be like thumbs downing a child's first step. Andy is music.
This is just amazing. Great job by the audio / cameraman for really capturing Andy joyfully ripping this tune off perfectly... and also not filming his/her own reflection in the guitar body.

The walk down at 2:20 is so beautifully played it seriously gave me goosebumps all the way down my arm. What a magnificent piece of music!!
This piece grooves so hard.

andy was rocking the huge beard back before it became the go-to style of every guy with a man-bun, and now is going for the stubble look. 8 years from now, the world will follow.
WHO GIVES A FLYING CRAP!? WHAT A DUMB COMMENT.
I loved the comment. Andy is God.
Man, what an amazing instrument. I've always wanted a baritone...
My new favorite! There is no mistaking the sound of Andy McKee!
Andys genius and virtuosity are obvious but he's WAY funkier than I think people give him credit for!🕺🏾😹

Reminds me a lot of Rylynn, feels like sort of a reroll of it :)
Not sure who would down vote this?!
1:13 great!...
He lost weight.... A lot! Which is very good.
Awesome music as always
What strings is Andy using here?... They sound beautiful! XD
hands down... i have yet to find a better guitarist... andy mckee the magic worm thumb... any strings lover would agree
Try John butler :)
Killrbunnii John Butler ? Are you joking ? XD He is not even close to Andy Mckee ! Tommy Emmanuel is still the best guitarist in my opinion, but it's a completely different style.
Kévin Le Xuan again different style but Paco De Lucia will always be number 1

I agree. Andy is my favorite
My goodness...that guitar looks like a sport car!

(of course alternative tunings too)
THAT right hand! where can I buy one?
At the "practice-hours-and-hours"-shack around the corner
NewSongs4TheWorld HAHAHAHAHA
NewSongs4TheWorld nice response, and its actually motivating, so thanks!
David Djenta gotta make it yourself, but i guarantee you it will be uniquely your own
sound very good, that guitar model is this ?
Greenfield made in Montreal, Canada. Write to Greenfield for infos about the model or to Andy.
I've seen these sort of frets on other guitars before. What's the advantage of having tilted frets vs. regular straight, ones?
Andy talks about it in one of his vids. him and don Ross both like the design. you'll notice the bridge is slanted too. I forget exactly why he said. something to about it changing the scale length
When I saw him live some years ago, I asked what that was about as well, and he said that the most distinct advantage is that it's actually better at retaining the tuning and sound of the guitar.
... or did he say it was easier to play... either one of the two, or maybe both. It's been a while.
Fanned frets on any sort of guitar simulate a harp or piano scale length which in turn makes the intonation of the instrument more precise.
What tuning are you playing in?
Peter Doody Ernie Ball Aluminium Bronze Medium gauge (They sound great but to be honest most of that sound is coming from the $18000 Greenfield guitar)
what tuning he is using?
tuning please !!
anyone can know the tuning?
Can someone please tell me what kind of guitar this is?
maybe baritonal guitar, i'm not sure about this....
For shure, that's a Greenfield made in Montreal, Canada. Check the website.
There is no hope for me :D
It's been five years since you posted that message....have you been practicing at least one hour a day since then???
It not, you can start now. I'll check in on you in three years. Do you have any idea what you could accomplish within three years, at an hour a day, with Knowing what direction you want to go?!?!?!?
Zeron82411 Your probably thinking of Drifting without the rhythm guitar body slaps
Is this a Baritone?
what size string?
Євгеній Олійник I think 16 :)))))
Beautiful guitar, and the play'n wasn't bad either :D
It sounds similar to another one of his songs. Can't remember what it is.
Joyland? Blue Liquid?
That staccato bass groove he does in a few places in this piece reminds me of the chorus of Heather's Song as well. That's also played on baritone.
Marcin Patrzałek I don't hear the similarities to Blue Liquid
Does that guitar seem really big to anyone ?
That's a baritone guitar- bigger body and scale length, thicker strings. Notice how it sounds real deep like a bass.
Ah OK
Haha!! Guessed that.
It turns purple when the light hits it
Any electro acoustic guitars good for percussive style playing? Greenfield guitars are way too expensive.
The quality of the percussive sound is almost entirely dependent on the method of recording(pickups, etc) and also technique. Not so much the guitar, you by no means need to drop $7k on a Greenfield LOL
base model is like $12k+ :c
The particular guitar he is playing is just short of 19k....
What I don't get is ~ Sometimes he looks away from the guitar.. or even closes his eyes!?!
.. I call audio Photoshop. =P
Andy you are losing weight my friend!!!
this isnt jack senff
ok I'm done, selling my guitar on ebay now.
haha.... I know the feeling. almost 50 years I've played finger style, and he make me want to chop my fingers off. haha
U on a ketogenic diet ANdy? :)
blasphemy! He shaved his beard! You HERETIC!!!! jk XD awesome as always.
Great playing and musicality, but honestly, all that slapping??.... twice as loud as the fretted notes - ruins the music, at least for me
+boptillyoudrop Go to the Mythmaker video on Andy's channel, It sounds a lot more cleaner.
