I saw The Eagles for the first time at Anaheim Stadium in 1975. My favorite Eagles song remains Tom Waits' "Ol 55". Btw, the bungalow apartment where Glenn Fry, J.D. Souther, and Jackson Browne lived in Echo Park during the early 70s is still standing on Laguna Ave.

Thank you for this Aimee. I had a work associate who was a friend of Glenn and I never did get to meet him but I swear that if I did the only thing I wanted to tell him was that I thought New Kid in Town was the best song ever written non-Beatles category. And also to confirm that he did the background vocs in FM but that’s kind of obvious.

This Eagles critique you put together, Aimee, was impeccably done!
I just loooooooved your analysis of New Kid In Town ! ! ! I think YOU may be the masterpiece here.
When I first heard you play and sing, I was so distracted from the awesome Eagles vocals and musicianship that you so accurately described that I couldn't decide if I should continue searching for Eagles live performances to watch the rest of my evening, OR begin searching for AimeeNolte's performances ! ! ! ! You are very talented, girl ! Are you a session artist by chance?
So yeah, I also grew up with the Eagles, starting with Southern California in the late '70's. (I lived in San Diego) I always knew that the Eagles were meticulous about harmonies and blending, but you truly honored them by your video, Aimee. Thank you for your time and effort to do perfect justice to the Eagles!
You truly are a musical gem ! ! ! 😁😁😍😍 P.S. I will definitely look into your nebula thing!

Several years ago I was hired as a sub up keyboard player for an Eagle Tribute band who came to town. We played the entire Hotel California album and other Eagles hits. I was never a huge Eagles fan until I did this gig. This gig forced me to take a deep dive into the Eagles song book. They are soooo good. New Kid In Town is my favorite Eagles tune.

J.D. Souther was a guest speaker at an in-service training I attended in Nashville several years ago on behalf of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI).
He talked about New Kid In Town and described it precisely as you did…an anthem to the fact that there is always someone better and fresher coming along to knock you off your pedestal.
J.D. played and sang the song with an acoustic guitar and had everyone mesmerized. Also talked about his time hanging out and writing with Glen Frey and Jackson Brown. Fantastic experience for all the aspiring songwriters in attendance.

My wife and I were 70's high school kids. Last May we flew from AZ to Austin to finally see them live at ages 63 and 62. Now I am a retired coach, principal, county superintendent. I've seen it all and believe me - big boys don't cry. The second song was Vince Gil singing New kid in town. By 8 measure in I was absolutely in tears. I turned to my wife and said...You didn't see this! Man it was great!

Whenever I listen to this song, when it reaches the "tears on your shoulder" bit, I always think "this is my favourite moment in all the Eagles' body of work".
I always maintain that opinion, right up until "..and you're still around.... oh my, my", where I think "oh, no...wait... this!"
I hold true to that for almost 20 seconds, until the A to Am and the "oooh"s that follow.
    I feel so fickle.
Edit: Actually, thinking about it, that pretty much epitomises the theme of the song.

I prefer the pre 1977 line-up, especially the period 1972 - 1975, but pretty much everything they have touched (including the solo outings from Henley, Frey, Walsh etc) has been amazing. Aimee, this was certainly the best analyse of some popular song that I ever saw on internet!!! Yes, I adore this Eagles' masterpiece so let's say I am a bit subjective about it, but you really mentioned and explained all important details of this song - lyrics and meanings behind those words, nice harmony details, back vocals details, etc etc etc .. I especially like those smart transitions from one key to another, those slick II-V-I phrases and that "melancholic" major to minor chord detail which is an ancient trick but still works well after decades and decades.
Dear Aimee, thank you so much for this video. At first sight this song doesn't look so musically smooth and sophisticated, but everyone who tried to play it seriously (myself included) understood what treasure lies inside, behind the curtains. Well done, you are the best!!! 👏👏👏👏👏🎵🎶🎹🙌🤗

AIMEE, thank you so much for your perspective on the EAGLES. I too love their music & sound. From the moment I first was introduced to their music, sitting in a 1 of those collapsible sunbathing chairs next to my childhood friend's built in swimming pool on the deck, I was immediately engulfed in the song, take it easy. From that moment on I became a life long FAN of THE EAGLES. I can remember also pulling off my sunglasses & asking my friend who is this? He said just listen to the rest of the songs & I WILL tell ya & I did . I couldn't even describe to you what my ears were hearing nor the peaceful easy feeling that I was MOVED to completely being in total astonishment & awe by their musical sound, but by the lyrics too. I finally got to see them live in Charlottesville va. In 2009 on their long road out of eden tour with GLENN, DON, JOE , TIM & their other quitar player whom my memory forgets me right now, but it's something I will always cherish . I got the T. shirt, got the coffee mug & bought the program booklet too , but unfortunately that eventually ended up on the shelf of a long lost girlfriend & she even has a t-shirt & coffee mug too that cost me more than the concert tickets. But the cost of the memories are priceless, just as the what kinda love WE had for each other; a little play on words there, but you get the meaning & I don't wade to deep in bitter creek nor do I wallow in the get nor wallow in , fill in the blank, & I have gotten over it , another play on words that were so significant &/ or relevant to THE EAGLES & their musical genius that in my opinion is unmatched. To actually perfectly to define their credits to not only R& R , but to MUSICAL genius is to recognize that their greatest HITS ALBUM stands alone to this DAY, the biggest selling ALBUM OF ALL TIME, let alone their hotel California ALBUM in the top 3or 4 of all time to their credit, albeit a concurrently a matter of conjecture relatively speaking of course, no doubt.

I grew up on the Eagles from the beginning. 1970's music was even popular with my parents. This song was out when I was in high school and I had just moved again, and I was the new kid in town, and every guy seemed to want me and every girl hated me. I still have the Hotel California album. Linda Ronstadt is amazing as well, I still have her albums too.

What a wonderful breakdown and explanation of such a great song. One of favorites from way back there when it was new. A friend's band played this every Friday night back then. Actually was just listening to this album today sitting on the back deck watching the clouds. Fantastic breakdown/playing/singing and explanation. Always liked the line "you're walking away and they're talking behind you"......and live Don Felder changed the notes he played on the album in that space to where it sounds like people talking (watch the live version from 1977 at the Capitol Center)

I love this song. Always loved the Eagles from the first time I heard them on my transister radio at the age of 7 years old. I knew I wanted to play guitar and sing. I just mess around these days, but it never gets old, and I always walk away with a great feeling. Thank you for sharing your insights on this fantastic song.

New Kid in Town always has a special feel for me. I was 14 and moved to Florida and I was introvert and it took me so long to fit in the new environment, I would go back home each summer to visit home and the line from the song that hit me was "even your old friends treat you like your someone new", everytime I went back to my home town I felt like was "someone new" and outsider so I was stuck in a weird vortex between my hometown and my new town I moved to!

You, your daughter and your whole family have great taste in music. Eagles and Chicago are my favorite American rock bands of all time. You’re a great speaker and really easy to listen to. Great details. Even about what Kelsey wore. Idk how you remember that.😅 I’m gonna take a peek and see what else you have on your channel.

Outstanding Aimee! Funny I’ve had exact thought for years. Nice to have them articulated in your piece here. The other cool thing that always struck me was modulation back to original key seamlessly … reminds me of the craftsmanship of the composers of great American songbook … very well done !

It doesn’t get any better than the Eagles. This is one of my favorite songs. So we’ll written. It’s one of those rare songs that just seem to have it all. The chords, melody, harmonies and the use of those minor/diminished heart melting changes. I’ve gone back to this group and particularly this song over and over through the years and it never gets old. As they say…great music is timeless.

Just a gem of a song. The modulation to G major is epic! It's also feels really good on piano if you move the whole song up a minor third going from G to B flat. All those sliding country licks fall so easily from the fingers in those keys.

  • @Spanfil
    @Spanfil Рік тому +3

First of all, favorite Eagles song. I knew “Tears on your shoulder” first as an interpolation in Stuck in the 90s by Moxy Fruvous, but when I heard the modulation in New Kid in Town I was hooked.
Secondly, you’ve probably already heard Jonathan Coultons love letter to this song in which he did his best to faithfully record every part.
Third, Jason Neubauer is incredible and I’m extremely lucky to share the stage with him every once in a while.
Lastly, the greatest gift my father gave my sister and I is an understanding of chords. We would listen to music on road-trips and he would hold up fingers to show progressions. He would quiz us on chord changes.
My degrees are in music and I tested out of my Aural theory classes based on that practice.
    Wonderful video, thank you.

I have a rotating list of favorite Eagles song. I always tell people their greatest hits album is the highest (or near to highest) selling album of all time. Then I pause before saying that this greatest hits album came out before the Hotel California album.
My current favorite of theirs is a live version of How Long, also by J.D. Souther. There's something about the melody and cadence of it, in conjunction with the lyrics, that I just can't get enough of.

I think the a-minor you mention is the deft use of a borrowed chord, sometimes known as modal interchange. Knowing when to use those harmonies is the sign of a gifted or skilled composer or songwriter.

My favorite in their catalog from the time I heard it on the radio all those years ago.
Harmonies are silky smooth and sang as one. Yeah, I know studio magic but still.
As Murdo said, "Tears on your shoulder(erer) followed by "There's talk on the street it's there to remind you"... Just ... wow.
Also the low guitar work and the hits following that.
    Brilliant construction.

Way to break this song down. I always almost get a lump in my throat when I hear this cause it reminds me of being a kid and hearing and somehow related to it the lyrics cause i was goin to to a new school. I was probably 6 or 7 maybe a little younger but the guitar and the harmony and the lyrics , everything about this song just hits me hard. I had no idea what they're talking about but I felt like they were they talking about me lol. It just comforts me and takes me back to being a kid. Plus i dont have to hide it like its a song that even though its a slower and kinda sappy i dont get made fun of by my buddies cause we're all eagle fans and if your not im not talking to you lol!

Wonderful vid Aimee! I have always been amazed by the brilliant rhythmic phrasing of the vocals. The exact rhythms are as crucial as the harmonies, and essential to the feel which would be too sleepy if a more relaxed phrasing was used.

God I love you. This is an awesome review/lesson, Thank-you! Telling me /us and then showing what I personally would never have gathered from my own twisted ear. My word; you bring a tear to my eye knowing how much I don't realise there is to know while showing how much there is to learn and more. Wow! New Kid in Town was a first fave from The Eagles and then Lying Eyes for me. Growing up with pianos and now onto keyboards only playing for my own pleasure, can't read a note but it's show much fun creating and find the discoveries. 70 yrs and pushing when I can. Thanks again for being who and what you do and for sharing. You're definitely a favourite. I feel defeated by the lack of knowledge but will never yeild. I really enjoyed this again thank you.

Well 'oh my my'... I'm amazed at how what you Aimee, and many of your commenters say the song is about, and what I always assumed the song was about, and how BOTH my interperpritation and your interpretation BOTH work. All my life I always believed the song was/is about what it's like to be a guy who is gorgeous to look at, when you move to a new school. For a while you're king of the hill, but, then again, "they will never forget you 'till somebody new comes along." New, and even MORE gorgeous to look at than you are. I always believed that was why the song says "people started walkin' like the new kid in town"... See what I mean?
