- Gerald Swindle returns with Bass University TV to show you how to fish his favorite summer ledge fishing lures. Crankbaits are one of the best summer bass fishing lures, if the fish aren't heavily pressured and the conditions are right. Gman is on the Tennessee River (which includes Lake Guntersville), and he's located fish using his Humminbird electronics on main lake structure. Gerald recommends always fishing with the current, because most shad will swim with the current. Swindle also likes to try throwing a crankbait, unless the eel grass is too thick.

So what size line do you prefer when spoon fishing the James Watson spoon or other bigger flutter spoons? I fish extremely clear waters here in the upstate of South Carolina at Lake Jocassee but I want enough so I’m not breaking off.

OMG...the world is a poorer place for this guy not putting out his own UA-cam channel. If I can watch some of the Googan dorks for tips I'd watch Swindle all damn day.
That damn spoon fishing is a hell of alot harder then it looks dude. I was fishing a 6 inch Nichols today off end of a dock that comes close to a steep rock bank, perfect set up for ambushing shad coming through that pinch point but any way. I was using a Phoenix 7'3" mh rod that I use for jigs and big worms and I hung 3 or 4 something's probably striper or catfish by how heavy they felt and everyone of em got off after about 4 5 cranks on my reel. I was using 17 pound invisx but it must not have been enough or rod was too light or something idk. Couldn't keep em hooked up. Had a brand new owner hook, swivel and stinger hook too
Cast with the current? So you want your lure to swim against the current? Or cast up current so your lure is flowing with the current towards you?
Cast up-current and fish with your lure moving with the current. Predators sit with their nose facing the current to ambush food coming with the current, and that's where you want your lure.

As he points out in the full 1 hour video, some baits like crankbaits and spoons aren't suited for eelgrass. In the full video, Gerald also talks about why they are biting the spoon in this clip, so it may not always be the right choice.
