Dear Father Fish, I have a problem that makes me worry about my beloved goldfish (he was the first one to be born in my tanks) and I haven't found yet an answer in your videos (I still haven't watched all of them, but I'm still learning about a lot of things, thank you so much).
He was born from two other fishes I had since years. He grew big, strong and healthy in the 80 gallon planted tank living only with his fiancee (she's 6 years old, they love each others), but at one year of age he started to have blood strikes in the tail. Which I know it's an ammonia issue, poor water quality and so on. But the water was fine, the other fish is fine. Anyway I've started to try to fix the tail... and I think I've really done EVERYTHING I could, and I mean *everything*: testing the water with any sort of tests, frequent water changes, improvement of the filter (switched to an external filter for about a 200 gallons tank + 2 sponge filters), more water flow, more plants, sand as substrate, less food, or days of fasting, fortified food, garlic, cinnamon, tea, salt, temperature, medicines against everything, ....but nothing worked. For now TWO YEARS long.
He has always the blood strikes, that are going slowly worst. There is a bloody hole in the end of the tail, but part this, he looks pretty fine. He eats, swims normally, he mated a lot of times, and any of his sons, once become an adult, has no problem at all.
There are no other signs of infections in his body. Sometimes in these years he got hurt (my cat scratched him) or had occsional bacterial issues (floating poop, or the wen on his head was infected) but I treated him and he recovered fast and completely... but the tail, that goes always, slowly worst.
The other female fish that lives with him is always fine. Never had ragged fins, never had blood strikes, nothing.
Maybe he was just "born weaker"? The other fishes in my tanks are fine. I even switched tanks, but his tail looks always the same, no matter in which tank he lives. The others fishes instead are always fine, never a problem even in his tank. I really don't know what to think.
There is something I can do?
I've read about a woman online, she was asking advice to a vet, one of her fishes had the same problem for a LOT of months or maybe a year... so not ammonia poisoning, that works faster I guess. A lot of messages, a service that required to pay some dollars... the vet never solved the issue.
I thing that only YOU could give me some advice. I THANK YOU FOR THE PATIENCE you had reading until here.
    Greetings from Europe.

Dear Sara. Mothers want their children to be perfect. Better you should celebrate the life he has enjoyed with the disability that has been his lot in life. He does not need to be fixed. He is an amazing, resourceful, and - dare I say it - joyous fish with progeny and love and a care giver who does not stop in her quest for his health. How wonderful for your goldfish!

@@FatherFish thank you for your kind words. I actually always felt so guilty to being not able to fix his tail. Like because i know I am ignorant and I always have a lot to learn. So I sometimes thought "maybe the tail of this fish it's like my varicose vein, I just have it , but it's not "because the air in this house is not healthy", because no others in my family have it. It's just me, my leg. But then I thought "what if you are doing something wrong to him without knowing?".
After your kind answer, because I trust you and your great experience, I feel less guilty and I will try to give him the best life I could. You are really a good person. I send you all my love and my esteem, sincerely. 💛🧡❤

Father fish I recall in one of your other videos about keeping tank temperature around 79-80F, planned on doing 6-7 Celestial pearl danios and 2-3 small corydoras in a 20g, but I keep seeing so many places state danios like colder low 70. The tank is running consistently at 78deg right now morning, noon, and night whether the LEDs are on or off. Just confused about optimal water temp. Thank you!

Hi, from India (northern plains). Regarding well-water you often talk about. I use/have ground water (water table could get as shallow as 10 feet when monsoon ends) pumped out by a personal motor. Is it equivalent almost as well-water, minus of course all the biology ?

So we got 2 platies for my kid. I didn't even know they were two males. They got along very well. Then I decided to move them to a bigger tank with a dirtied substrate with a sand cap as father fish advises. Some plants as well. Driftwood. Suddenly they seem more confident and active, exploring all the nooks and crannies (the previous tank had very little gravel and just some artificial decoration), and one of them started constantly chasing the other. I decided to get 5 female platies to join them but they are younger. What happened next was, the male that used to be running from the other is always hiding now. I've seen them doing a circle dance between themselves eyeing each other and the same one always runs and hides. He's ok. I make sure he's eating. The other is always chasing the females. But it seems platies aren't that much peaceful in some circumstances.

    • @FatherFish

Yes. The primary food for Mbunas cichlids is algae. It is their most plentiful food in their natural environment. Culturing algae in a Malawi African cichlid tank overcomes all of the difficulties of keeping these fish in toxic water.

Tried the "New way" of setting up tanks and using chemicals and Water changes, couldn't keep things stable even lost one fish (i never used to kill fish had 3 tanks in the early 00's)
then watched your video on not worrying about the nitrate levels....but the natural way to control things
Started following you, planted my tank deepened the substrate. Now it's a battle to keep the plants feed as the levels for the three "Nitrogen enemies" are now pretty much 0, in fact now I worry my Nitrate levels are too low🤣

Hello sir, i dont have wnough space to put 4 inches of total substrate. But what if i stick to a 3:1 ratio of substrate ? 1 inch of sand and 0.3 inch of soil?
I did that and so far so good but worried about the future haha. Im running a paladarium with crabs fish shrimp snails

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  Рік тому +2

Absolutely. The ration is critical. For a tank less than 5 gallons I recommend 1/2" of soil with 1.5" of sand.
