I've been teaching Spanish on preply for more than one year and I can relate with what you said. I started directly with 4 dollars because that seemed like a lot of money to me per hour (in Colombia it's pretty good). After one or two weeks I started getting so many students that I even got to have 10 hours a day sometimes ( I needed the money desperately so I'm glad it was like that). Then some students posted a review of me and I started asking the students I already trusted if they could do the same (good reviews make potential students trust you more). I raised the price to 6 and things didn't change that much. Aftet 2 or 3 months I changed it to 8 and even though I didn't get so many students with that price, I still was earning more working less. However you should understand that the higher your class's price is, the better your quality should be, these studens were of course much more demanding than the ones that used to pay me 4 dollars, they usually need help for exams, their jobs or planned travels. Anyway, I was out of my country for 3 months and because of the limited time I had and the time change, I wasn't successful with many trial lessons (I was unlucky that all of them were set one week before I had to go and the new schedule wouldn't work for them), that made my score go down very bad and I had no new students for around 4 months. I got a bit desperate, so I changed my profile picture and made a new and better video knowing better now what I should mention in it, I also started changing the price to 7, then to 6 and then to 5. The strategy worked and I got like 10 more students again, and I already raised the price to 6. Soon I'll have to move awaya again and change my schedule, so there I'll check if I can raise it more again. It's a long message but I guess it can be useful for someone. It should also be considered that you need to be kinda lucky sometimes. For example, many students choose teachers from specific countries because they like the accent or because they're going to travel there (such a disadvantage for not so well-known Spanish speaking countries). Also, there are some months where there are more students and others with less. And I also am lucky that I can open a lot of slots on my schedule since I'm on holidays (7am-23pm), that gives you more chances too. I don't plan to live from this forever but I can say preply helped me and basically saved me from a very difficult time in my life, then I hope it can work for others too
May I ask if I have to be a native speaker of the language that I am going to teach? I do have 3 years experience of teaching English yet I am so nervous about starting teaching on preply because I already work 9 hours per day, 7 days per week. I do plan to get TEFL but I still need to quit the job I am currently working and start on preply. So what do you think?
@@allaahashem1531 I don't think you need to be a native speaker. Preply has an option that says "look for native speakers only", that means there are non native speakers tutors too. However, may I ask what language you speak? Spanish is a good option to teach too. And also, please consider where you live to make a decision. If dollars represent a lot of money for you, you can risk a bit since you need few hours of teaching to maintain yourself. Otherwise you have to be more careful since it's hard to start with a high price if you need to teach several hours to survive (don't forget preply will take around 30% of your income for the first classes and changing dollars to your currency has a price too). And please don't quit your job before doing anything. I understand you have very little time, but first you should make sure you make a very good video and an attractive profile for the website, then they have to accept you. After that you need to be a bit lucky or have a competitive/low price to get students quickly and their reviews to attract more people. If you see this is working you can then consider what to do with your job. Please read very carefully all the information you can about the website, their conditions, payment methods, advantages, etc, look for or make good material to teach your classes (private only classes aren't the same to normal classes) and if you really try, in one or two months you should have a decent amount of students. I'll say it once more just in case. Don't quit your job before you see your preply account is working, preply is great but the beginning is hard. Try to open at least 10 hours of your week to teach and see how it goes If you have any questions or try preply please keep me updated :) I would like to know others' experiences
Hello, for how long did you keep your rate at $4. I set my rate to $4 until I taught 20 lessons. After 20 lessons I wanted to change it to $6 since I changed it to $6 I haven't gotten any new bookings. Do you have any tips for me
Hello. That happens. Especially if you're teaching a subject with many tutors. Could be that tutors in that subject are charging much lower. You can try $5 until you teach a few more lessons before increasing again.
Hey Carey am back again with another question kindly what subjects are on market currently in preply coz I applied as an English tutor and I have never gotten a feedback it's now past one week. They are not even replying my texts

Is your pay increased by the number of students or it's just the same?
