Your wildland videos are the most interesting part of your channel for me. I am a volunteer firefighter in Texas, and I am currently taking my willdland class to expand my skills. As a result, I very much enjoy getting input with a good deal of experience in that field.

The reason why you should stop sharpening the shovel partway up the side is in case your boot slips off sideways and down the side of the shovel you won't cut into your boot.

Nice video Cody. My name is Wyatt and I'm fourteen and id like to thank you for all of your videos and all of your knowledge you share on your channel. You are the reason I'm getting into Wild land firefighting and I'm training with my local fire department. Yes due to my age I cant leagley go on a fire but we recently had a fire on the edge of our property and I think it would be a very good thing to know and when I get out of high school wild land firefighting is definitely something I would like to get in to. Again thank you for your videos they are great.

That sharpening gauge is really cool, every wildland firefighter should have one. I would love to see how your new pack is set up, what gear and supplies are in it. But you gotta bring back Alan, to get his view on it.

+Wranglerstar Hey Cody I believe the turn step sharpening limit is in case your foot slips off the shovel and slides down the edge so as to keep from cutting your foot/boot! Thanks for the great content!!!

We have a lot of them on the District. We have them in our fire cache and I use them quite regularly when rehabbing tools in the shop or from our engine. It's not something you would really carry in your line gear, but it's super handy to have on the truck or back at the shop. I'm pretty sure it's still available through GSA, but I don't do the ordering. I can figure it out for you if you would like.

Gday Cody, in Australia the McLeod or 'Rakehoe' as it is called here is the primary hand tool we use when constructing hand line. Pulaski we use more for blacking out, busting open logs, digging stump holes, roots etc. Always interesting to note the differences between wild land fire agencies in our countries! Cheers

Coming to the England should consist of not getting blinkered to London and it's touristy places. Because you're country folk I think you would benefit from renting a car and driving around our small country. From London to Stonehenge will take around 2 1/2 hours depending on traffic from there to Yorkshire for the best fish and chips in the world would take about 4 hours again traffic willing. Whitby has the f&c plus The abbey that Dracula was based on (which is nearly falling into the sea) from there to the Lake District would take around 2-3 hours taking in some of the best scenery in the world. Plus loads of other places along the way you would like to visit.

The Missoula Technology and Development Center has developed a handtool sharpening gauge that provides a quick guide to the proper cutting angle for a number of tools. The gauge takes the guesswork out of sharpening Pulaskis (both ends), axes, shovels, combination tools, and McLeods. It has a "no-go" line that shows when a Pulaski head is too worn to refurbish. The handtool sharpening gauge is available from the General Services Administration, item number: NSN 5210-01-324-2776, NFES 0510.

As far as the shovel it is probably not sharped that high so you don't cut yourself as easily if you slip off.

I think we're all on the same page there. Although, the boots they require (and probably still provide) would keep your foot from getting cut, but would rip the boots open after enough missteps.

    • @talonosterhout-delay3753
      @talonosterhout-delay3753 6 років тому

You don't sharpen it that far back because bevels get dull. Sharpening it that far back will cause the shovel to go out of service up to 5x faster due to the wear on that angle of leverage.

Some of the best really old pubs are close to the centre of london near the Tower of london etc.The George coaching inn i[1667 ish] s only a few minutes walk down Borough high road near the Tower bridge and does food .plenty of outside space and indoor bars also.it is just far enough from the tourist trail not to get swamped.Easy to get there by tube from Tower hill station.Lots to see on the way along the south bank.
I have no idea of the numbers who might want to come in england but this area has good connections from all over.

Just out of interest, did you know in England we would call your long handled shovel a "Cornish shovel"? It is the shovel that tin miners used to use, a few centuries ago. It has a 47" handle. It is much easier to use than the shorter handled ones...which are the reason for the phrase below...

Wonder if someone would 3D model it for him? (I don't have a 3D modeler, or I'd volunteer.) Then he could put it on Thingiverse to share with all.

Maybe somebody can get all the dimensions and lengths? I'd make a diy version?

Hello! I have been pulling my hairs trying to prevent a handle from sliding on my recently bought tomahawk style handle fitting axe. A few swings and down slides the head loose all the way towards my hand...Could you make a video covering that? From what I’ve been researching, it’s something a lot of people struggle with. I tend to trust what you advise more than other channels. God bless.

Would this tool be suitable to gage the sharpening, profiling of the Marbles Camp Axe that you featured a year or so ago? I bought one right then and love it but I still don't know the exact profile it should have. I keep it shaving sharp and the handle is saturated with Boiled Lind Seed oil and I plan on keeping it. its a keeper in my mind.

Having the top of the shovel edge unsharpened might be so you don't cut up your boots when you are stamping on the shovel and you slip off the side? If you are frantically shovelling you might slip off and damage your boots? I live in England though on a smallholding in the south west in Devon so wouldn't be able to help.

Also go to google search for "Hand tools for trail work" that will give you a PDF of all the hand tools, and on page 42 is how to use the gauge. IT a great book so much information that is hard to find.

Speaking of being "used up" by Forest Service Regulations, we were given one that required us to pack in so many lbs of dynamite for every animal in the train. In the winter you could not bury one that died and by regulation, you could not simply leave them. So, you opened them up, packed them with the explosives......

Get the hot top. You can stuff extra stuff in the top part and cinch it down. It's what I have. Been doing wildland fire for 13 years and it's my favorite bag
