Hi Scott! Great tips and use of your pans and pot. I’d say using your propane is far cheaper. Depending on an electrical system could be a problem if your inverter goes out like another van channel had with the exact issue. I found out those induction burners give off radiation ☢️. All in all, you are making good choices. Nothing better than stainless steel and cast iron for your gas burner. Keep the cooking adventure coming my friend. 😎✌🏼
Not to mention the cost of a solar system like you describe would cost a great deal more then a propane setup and most folks don't have that kind of $$$ laying around, including me =) besides, nothing cooks better than an open flame.
Fabulous! I've been waiting for this video🙂 Also, I used your method to season my Matfer yesterday and it worked like a charm! Eggs sliding around like hockey pucks. That small pot looks really nice too. The sloped sides remind me a little of a saucier - food maybe not as likely to get caught in the bottom corners and easier to clean. Thanks for sharing!!
Solar smolar!. Don't worry about the holier than thou save the planet people. Propane works just fine. If the fumes get to you, just crack a window or turn on your ceiling fan. You don't have to apologize to anybody for your propane stove. I like all of your "made to fit" pots and pans. You seem such a calm person. It must take a lot to get you riled up! (A patreon fan) (Hey! Spell checker doesn't like the work "Patreon"!)
That Comal has more uses you might want to consider like making pancakes or crepes. You can also use it for biscuits. And, you can use it as a lid. You can bake cookies and such. Just use one of your domed pots on top to keep the heat in, like an oven would. As for oils, I also use coconut oil (higher smoke point), and avocado oil, which has a much higher smoke point and has a neutral flavor. I recently bought a carbon steel pan and was surprised by the weight of it. Not sure I will use it much because heavy things are now hard on my wrists. Enjoyed your video.
I prefer to use cast iron skillets & pots too because they’re better for cooking plus I have a portable induction stove & a gas stove in my van which I can use them on both
We live in a good sized house but it has a minuscule kitchen, so anything we look at, we must think about space and what will go out in order for that new thing to come in. Once we got the hang on it, not so bad. i have a steel pan like that and moved it into my camping gear because I wasn't sure how to season it. I'll look into trying it inside! Thanks so much. Your new cooktop is fantastic. It fits your space and has a really good flame. Well done.

Really great info. And I know what you mean about being tired of having to re-buy non stick pans. I recently needed to replace one that was a few years old and actually went looking for the pan you featured here. Couldn't find it at the time and was overwhelmed trying to research a good carbon steel pan, so I caved and went the easy route with yet another nonstick lol. I'll try again when I inevitably need to replace this one too.
'k, I've definitely got to come back to watch this when I'm fully awake. 😀 As another coffeeholic, I've been wondering what you've been using to make yours. And I'm intrigued by that pan!
Great video. I’ve found that avocado oil works much better and lasts much longer due to the higher smoke point. I use it on both my cast iron and my carbon steel pans.
Very interesting, thank you for sharing why you choose what you use. But - you forgot to mention your water kettle - I have got the same one and love it :-)
I've got a "comal" like that that I use for quesadillas. It takes minimal oil. Like enough to wipe out with a paper towel then 2 half moon quesadillas at a time. I usually do instant potatoes with either black beans or refried and a small amount of cheese. Its pretty much a sriracha/yellow bird sending unit.
I tend to use camping gear, I've had a SOTO navigator cook set the pans are realistically sized it's made of anodized aluminium and everything nestles into each and the bonus is it comes with a pot insulator so you can use the pans as bowls. I use my work van as a camper so everything needs to be removable you have to find what works for you, it's trial and error my garage has a fair few gas stove and pot and pans mistakes along with sleeping bags and cots. My guess would be half the items you start with on the road will have been changed a year later, there is no try before you buy with cookware.
I was torn between the cast iron griddle and pan. I chose the pan but may still get the griddle. It would also be good the use to cover the pan. I don’t like non stick either.
I bought a 12 inch MadeIn pan and love it but it's way too large for my campervan. So, just like Goldilocks I tried the 8 inch pan. Way too small. Those fine salesmen are gonna make me buy the whole damn set, even though I just wanted one pan!
I think you could benefit from a rice cooker ... electric or not ... it also does much more than just rice. They cook rice in about 20 min, perfect every time. Also, take a look at thermal cookers ... I think you might like them! it is a cordless, non-electric, portable version of a crockpot. It’s simply a stainless steel pot that goes inside a thermal outer pot. You take out the inner stainless steel pot and fill it with your food items - like soup or stew, or roast, or chicken dinner (but I know you don't eat chicken) or some beans - and put it on your stovetop and heat your food up to a good rolling boil. Let it boil for 1-20 minutes - depending on what type of food you have in it. Then you put the lid on the inner pot, turn off your stovetop, use a hot pad to pick up the inner pot by its handle, and put in into the outer thermal container. Close the lid on the outer container and let the food "cook." You can prepare a meal in the morning and let it "cook" all day while you're driving or out of the van with no fire safety worries. Little pressure cookers are great for "camping" cooking with propane and the food is super flavorful. Check out the Hawkins ones. Hawkins CB40 Contura Pressure Cooker is generally considered the best of the small, non-electric ones. About $50.
I’m currently testing out one of your suggestions. I’ve also tried and found the others to not be suitable for me. There will be more on this subject soon.
@@StaticCamperVan my hubs and son sometimes backpack with a 1.5 qt pressure cooker ... Since you have refrigeration, you could save money buying less tender cuts of cheaper meats and pressure cook them (in no time --- what about RIBS???) and they would be "fall off the bone" delicious.
If you just want to boil water for coffee perhaps a bunson burner will work? It may be more economical, and an alternative to propane. It's just a tiny alcohol stove in chemistry sets..I've always liked having an alternative to things just as a backup. I'm getting one to experiment with..

No, I haven’t found a need for a lid when using the small pan. Since it’s primary use is oatmeal and reheating leftovers, I’m usually stirring the contents frequently. Not doing any real cooking in that pan.
Would you consider the mineral B De Buyer pan equal in quality to your De Buyer Carbon Steel Frying Pan? I really don't know what the difference is. Seems De Buyer has moved to this mineral B stuff.
I’ve read conflicting information regarding the two pans. I’m not entirely certain but the way I understand it now is that the only difference is with the factory applied coating. The Carbone Plus has a machine oil added while the Mineral B has a beeswax coating. The factory coating is only a temporary coating applied to keep the pans from rusting during shipping. Either coating needs to be thoroughly removed before the seasoning process. So it shouldn’t matter which pan you choose. Unless you’re vegan and want to avoid the beeswax.
@@StaticCamperVan Thanks for your reply. I was just about to delete the post. I did some research and it seems that the new pans now are a combo of carbon steel and stainless. The stainless pans only have stainless steel handles and can be used in an oven. That plus what you said seems to be the difference.
