SCP Secret Lab is scary when you are alone or with a small group, especially ironically without mics. Listening for the sound cues of what SCP is getting closer, are those footsteps friends, an undead horde, or a soldier ready to kill you since they all sound the same. It's a good horror game when it wants to be, otherwise it's more focused on combat
Damn I have complete opposite feelings about outlast trials. Its scary the first time you get introduced to each trial but that effect goes away after a while for sure, and basically turns into a game of optimizing your runs. The rig system and perks add more depth for "fighting" back against the invincible mobs. Learning how each monster acts differently, and learning map objectives and layouts to be more effective in runs. The modifiers are also fun and I think theres a lot of replayability. Communication is pretty important for strategizing in the game especially if you want to get a good grade. It's more of a co-op scenario game with the outlast/horror theme. Personally I found this gameplay loop pretty fun compared to most other horror co-op games I've played in the past.
One of the unique strengths I find that multiplayer horror games have is the ability to separate players from each other. Normally having others with you creates this sense of safety by having a group, a support system, around to help. Suddenly cutting off one player from another inverts this, making a unique feeling of vulnerability. Take Labyrinth for example. While navigating its maps and mazes various 'cave-ins' can occur separating players from one another, forcing them to suddenly travel alone. Combine this with the in-game proximity chat and you have a good recipe for horror.
I can't help mentioning how much I love the sound tracks of these videos, not only do they sound great and go with the video, but they also give me a dopamine rush just hearing music from all my favorite games
1:08 I wouldn't be brave enough to subtly promote my Vtuber Oshis while casually coming out of the closet. I always knew you were a king but huge props!
Labyrinthine is another multiplay horror game tha I really enjoy. The scare kinda goes away once you play for a while, but the pigs in the tunnels in chapter 4 are terrifying.
i play laby too and honestly don't even enjoy it for any horror-related stuff, i just think doing mazes with friends and proxy chat is fun, and there's more to getting good at the game than what meets the eye too (stuff like baiting rush monsters, keeping a monster "agro stunned" to help a teammate slip by, hiding around corners to reset dying teammates, taking good lines to reach safety, looping for teammates to do puzzles or get a revive, etc.)
Just like our instinct has trained us to feel more comfortable in groups, fear is contagious and grows exponentially in groups. It's a simple thought process just like most instinctive behavior: Group=Stronger=No Threat Group scared=Threat stronger than group=Threat way stronger than you.
One feels fear. Two feels nothing. Three feels excitement. You are wrong. The group does not get scared. Just having another person by your side is enough to nullify your fear. Having a third person makes it fun.
@@Hivatel Until someone gets scared anyway. Why do you think it's forbidden to yell fire in a theater? Panic spreads faster than fire, causing people to be consumed by fear and lose all sense of reason no matter how big the group.
In beta phasmo one of my friends was trying out VR. He died, but for some reason he kept his head cam. So we sent our spy ghost inside the house to solve all of our problems.
The thing about phasmophobia though is that after like 10 hours of playing it is no longer scary in the slightest, its just feels like your speedrunning the game every time you play and the fear factor is removed if you know what to do in every situation.
Phasmophobia is really a puzzle game with a horror theme, most of the enjoyment I get is from identifying ghosts correctly especially on 2 or less evidence modes
There was this fun game called "We were here", free too. Not the most scary, but I love it's use of communication. See, you're both trapped in a castle on complete opposite ends, and can't see what the other is doing at all. All you have is a walkie talkie, which seems like it would ruin the scariness, but it kinda doesn't. See, only ONE of you can talk at a time, if both of you try to talk, all you get is silence. So in some of the scarier sections, all you can hear is the other person's terrified ramblings and pleas for help (that was mostly me) while all you can do is listen and try your best to help. And you can't turn them off either so you are forced to listen
I’m currently working on a game that’s basically Escape the Backrooms, but better. The plan is that almost every level splits up the players at the start so you have to find each other. There’s proximity chat, but due to this being developed on Roblox (yes I know it has a bad connotation but it’s going really good so far), there’s bubble chat for players who haven’t been verified for proximity chat. The entities consist of a main entity designed solely to disorient and split up the main group, and supporting entities that slowly kill off your crew when you’re separated. It also has survival elements such as hunger and sanity to contrast the horror and make it harder to stay in one place. I think the game will be really fun and also horrifying once it’s done.
Now i know most of you wouldn't want to try this; but i think an amazing way to re-live horror games in a completely different way is to roleplay them. Try to actually pretend you're your own character, and if you can; even voice act your character's fears & feelings. Once you get into that role, they feel scary all over again; as if you were on danger. Specially if the games are good, of course. Project Zomboid and Escape the Backrooms sure did work like a charm for me when trying that. And having friends makes it so much more magical. %100 recommend.
I agree with Outlast Trials not being a scary horror game; however I don't think the criticism of there being no ways to defend yourself is accurate. In the trials there are two throw-able items you can get: bricks and bottles. If you find a brick you can throw it at one of the enemies and stun them allowing yourself to escape/give yourself time to do an objective. Bottles double as a stun and a distraction because like bricks they stun, but they also make noise which draws attention to the bottle giving you breathing room. I don't know how far you got in Outlast Trials, but you unlock "rigs" after you escape your first trial. These rigs include, stun, blind, x-ray, and heal. Blind is a mine that explodes into a cloud of gas once stepped upon that blinds enemies that walk into it. Stun is a throw-able device that stuns the enemies for a much longer time than a brick or bottle. In my personal opinion the only thing I really want out of Outlast Trials is more content which they are planning a new trial + MK trials to release in October.
SCP Secret Laboraty is mostly a game to have fun with random people all doing their own thing and usually saying dumb shit (if not spamming "funny" soundboards, the proximity voice chat being great) And yet there's still a few time here and there where you get scared for real and man do I both hate and love these moments. You spend 10 minutes having fun (or not) doing stuff peacefully, you think everything all right, then you hear someone talking behind a door so you approach to say hi, open the door and and there's SCP-939 pouncing at your to eat your face as you scream like a baby for the very little time you had to react and now 939 has stolen the last thing you said and he *IS* going to spam you screaming like a baby for the rest of the game and there's nothing you can do about it while you hear other spectator laughing at 939 spamming it and mocking your baby scream. SCP Secret Laboratory is the both the funniest (not "fun", funny) and most horrifying game because it has cyber bullying guaranteed
sucks that northwood is ruining it, even for my computer that's less than 4 years old and is of great build sometimes it struggles to keep the game running without a game crash, and all the bugs and shit too. like how sometimes the ball is completely invisible and makes no sound so you can just die to nothing and it be completely not your fault (this has happened to me like 3 times all in entrance zone about to escape as D-Class, makes my blood boil)
SCP and Phasmo are two of my most played games and I 100% agree. The potential of Phas is only limited by server issues and poor optimization (not to mention the truly awful item shop, I would pay THEM money to let me design a new UI for that abomination). Phas is so fun though even if you only have 1 other person to play it with. SCP can be scary if you're playing on a private server with friends but even then you need to have a large group of people and the more familiar you get with the mechanics the more it feels like a multiplayer PVP game instead of a horror game. The horror only shows up in the split second instances when the parameters Stellar has laid out are met. Great video man, really hit the nail on the head here.
SCP is more spread out panic moments that make your heart beat fast rather than being spooky for being an horror genre game, and thats why i like it more than phasmo, because its so random and unpredicable that one second you can be laughing your ass off on 914 by shooting the scientists and the other you hear larry's muddy footsteps coming from the gate, is extremely enjoyable and its community is absolutely nuts

Good points, only thing is with phas is when you try to get good at it and be a better detective, it slowly becomes less scary. Once you know whats happening behind the scenes, you know what it all is, it doesnt scare you as much
this video aged... poorly ? well ? I don't know but it aged with the release of lethal company there's definitely some new things to say now ! I love how lethal company is scary af when you're alone
I would love to see you take a peek at the many, MANY games that spawned from Phasmophobia's success. 'Multiplayer Co-op Investigative Horror' became its own sort of sub-genre, with some games just repeating what Phasmophobia did but worse, and others taking the idea to a new locale. Forewarned sits are a particularly special place in my heart because it does everything Phas does but leans a bit more into the gameplay side of things with more mechanics than simply hiding when the monsters are coming to get you. You don't just cower and survive, you have to actively look for an escape whilst the monster closes in, each of them doing something different. One monster requires you to sneak around, yeah, but he is blind. He is constantly and loudly stomping around, and there are multiple butt-clenching moments where I have to press myself to a wall and watch as he presses mere inches past me, unable to even vocalize my discomfort for fear he would turn and chew my face off. And the best part is seeing my friends do the exact same thing across from me! It's great!
Outlast trials does limit the amount of options you have to fight back too much... Except for bottles, bricks, and the OP rigs. I think the point is valid until late game, when using a blind or stun rig can save nearly every run. It flips very quickly from too little defensive options to becoming nearly untouchable in any mode under X Trials. I enjoy Outlast Trials, but it is extremely repetitive and does need some new scares.
On god, on multiple occasions I've had all my friends die and have to try to leave on my own. Sometimes I'm screaming into the void to make sure they are dead before I leave the building to go back to the ship. Amazing game!
The best part about the backrooms multiplayer is that there is a monster that will mimic one of your friends and even use clips of their audio from earlier in the game to trick and lure you
I love phasmaphobia at a casual level, but I hate playing it. Cowering in a closet or (worse) behind boxes is the most terrifying thing I’ve encountered in video games.
I would highly recommend Labyrinthine. My friends and I used to play a lot of phasmaphobia but after a long time we started looking at it too much as a game and its scare factor wore off. Labyrinthine continues to freak my friends and I out fairly consistently. Wandering through mazes, being separated from your friends by either the monsters that hunt you or by shit like vines growing to block your path all while you desperately try to solve a puzzle as you hear some shit approaching you and your friends voices fade away due to the proxy chat is very entertaining. According to what you said here I think it is the kind of multiplayer horror game you would enjoy. Definitely worth a look.
The creator of escape the backrooms also made a monster that looks like a player (skin stealer) echo your voice and is planning to use AI to mimic it and say the opposite of what you say to disorient your friends and even mute you on voice call
You see, the reason the SCP game wasn’t scary was because you played Secret Laboratory, which is a giant meme. If you want good multiplayer SCP, play SCP Containment Breach Multiplayer (you can find it on steam, someone made it based on the original SCP Containment Breach using the special SCP License, it’s free). Also, it has proximity chat. The original single player game is an absolute classic, mastering atmosphere and a sense of dread but also wanna see what weird monster tries to murder you next. The multiplayer version is fun, and thanks to the in game mechanics 173 won’t seem like a huge threat in multiplayer but will force you to use teamwork in a tense moment to deal with him, *assuming* you see him first. That is, until 173 isn’t the only monster and you get separated from your friends faster than superheated oil separates from ice cold water because they all showed up at once and separated you manually. What I don’t like about the game is the multiplayer part was jimmy rigged in and has issues with respawning and stuff. If you are going to play, keep jumping turned off and make it Euclid mode. Euclid makes it so you can only save at computer screens and terminals, and in the multiplayer version your save file is your respawn point instead of a save. If you’re on the normal difficulty, you respawn wherever you pressed f5, and each person presses f5 on their own. It gets very convoluted and annoying very fast. Also play the single player version, one of the best horror games.
To this day I didn't found any scary multiplayer horror games, there is one I want to try yet - Lethal company. But as you said, having friends make any game feel more funny than scary and the fact that games like escape the backrooms, pacify, phasmo etc are not even scary does not help them if they give you friends to make fun of "scary" parts
Ready or Not even though not a horror makes me nervous because whenever you shoot someone and they aren't dead, they will disengage and come at you at a later time. At certain maps, they can pretend to be a helpless civilian or even hide, always making you feel unsafe. If these elements were to be adopted in a horror multiplayer settings, I can imagine it to be very, very scary.

@merluzo8269 I mean, how were you playing it?
Time to rewatch this
Wow! 2 stellarjay videos in one day!
Phasmophobia is probably my favorite game to play with friends, so scary, yet with such insane amounts of depth to figure out what ghost it is
SCP Secret Lab is scary when you are alone or with a small group, especially ironically without mics.
Nah I agree Outlast Trials goes hard

Me watching this right now
My mind : lethal company
I wonder how lethal company would fit this video
Thank goodness you reuploaded the video after forgetting the "..." at the end of the title 🙏🙏
@@kalidoesart For sure, that is way is has a concurrent playerbase. The mechanics are just fun.
Just like our instinct has trained us to feel more comfortable in groups, fear is contagious and grows exponentially in groups.
It's a simple thought process just like most instinctive behavior:
Group=Stronger=No Threat
Group scared=Threat stronger than group=Threat way stronger than you.

@@axios4702 Not in horror games!! Because the fear is irrational.
i think one of the most genius part of GTFO is that the scariest thing isn't the monsters... it's you or your teammates fucking up
In beta phasmo one of my friends was trying out VR. He died, but for some reason he kept his head cam. So we sent our spy ghost inside the house to solve all of our problems.
Thus the phrase:
*"Horror with friends is comedy."*
we're. we're gonna ignore the vtubers? the vtubers boyfriend asmrs? we're all gonna ignore it? okay then, just making sure
The thing about phasmophobia though is that after like 10 hours of playing it is no longer scary in the slightest, its just feels like your speedrunning the game every time you play and the fear factor is removed if you know what to do in every situation.
yeah but its still fun. i have over 600 hours in phasmo and im still not tired of ghost looping and challenges

As an Indie game developer watching your videos, I took a lot of good tips from you. Thank you!

The hex asmr is SENDING ME
Now i know most of you wouldn't want to try this; but i think an amazing way to re-live horror games in a completely different way is to roleplay them.
Yea yea talk about the game and stuff but what flashbanged me is..HEX?
0:08 as someone named louie i found this especially funny
SCP Secret Laboraty is mostly a game to have fun with random people all doing their own thing and usually saying dumb shit (if not spamming "funny" soundboards, the proximity voice chat being great)
And yet there's still a few time here and there where you get scared for real and man do I both hate and love these moments.
Secret laboratory isnt really scary its more fun tthan anything I'd put it in A tier on my version of his list
sucks that northwood is ruining it, even for my computer that's less than 4 years old and is of great build sometimes it struggles to keep the game running without a game crash, and all the bugs and shit too. like how sometimes the ball is completely invisible and makes no sound so you can just die to nothing and it be completely not your fault (this has happened to me like 3 times all in entrance zone about to escape as D-Class, makes my blood boil)
@@Photom101 You mean when jumping could randomly kill you ? (especially after taking 914) ?
Yea, if he's looking for actual horror, then Scp: containment breach would be a lot better.

Ewok hunt is the ultimate multiplayer horror game
I watched it before the re-upload and liked it so I’ll just watch it again and like it again because the content can’t get worse if it’s the same thing 😤
Good points, only thing is with phas is when you try to get good at it and be a better detective, it slowly becomes less scary. Once you know whats happening behind the scenes, you know what it all is, it doesnt scare you as much
this video aged...
poorly ? well ?
I don't know but it aged with the release of lethal company
there's definitely some new things to say now ! I love how lethal company is scary af when you're alone

You seriously make some quality content dude. Always a pleasure to see that you've uploaded!
3:36 TELL ME I rewatched it 30 times!

I enjoy Outlast Trials, but it is extremely repetitive and does need some new scares.
welp, here comes lethal company
I ABSOLUTELY love that sponsor transition
bro this outlast hate is not fair its the best game to come out in years i love it with my whole soul
PLEASE MAKE A VOD CHANNEL. or a gaming channel I wanna see more of you gaming with friends
And then lethal company releases
On god, on multiple occasions I've had all my friends die and have to try to leave on my own. Sometimes I'm screaming into the void to make sure they are dead before I leave the building to go back to the ship. Amazing game!
The best part about the backrooms multiplayer is that there is a monster that will mimic one of your friends and even use clips of their audio from earlier in the game to trick and lure you
It doesn't do that, fancy did say that he plans on using ai like that but right now its just a pre recorded sound
escape the backrooms is so fun... with friends, by yourself it's terrifying af
Aged like milk with lethal company, that stuff has me freaked out and having fun at the same time

Lethal company both makes me laugh till I can't breathe, AND makes my heartrate go mad every time I hear footsteps that aren't mine
I love phasmaphobia at a casual level, but I hate playing it. Cowering in a closet or (worse) behind boxes is the most terrifying thing I’ve encountered in video games.
HEX HAYWIRE LMAO 😂😂
Definitely worth a look.
im here because of ike mentioning hex here lmfao
Phasmophobia is a gem, and we should start a cult around it.
Also play the single player version, one of the best horror games.
i hope you make a video on lethal company. i think they fucking killed it with everything you said in the video

Damn you are right
Ready or Not even though not a horror makes me nervous because whenever you shoot someone and they aren't dead, they will disengage and come at you at a later time. At certain maps, they can pretend to be a helpless civilian or even hide, always making you feel unsafe. If these elements were to be adopted in a horror multiplayer settings, I can imagine it to be very, very scary.
