i remember hearing Tim, Elfi, or Al say that the Chinese had hardcore ballet training after the Worlds in Tianjin...and it paid off, Liu Xian never looked better!
O caramba, I think I hit the general reply--anyway, look below. And here's an interesting thought--why, during the Soviet era of domination, were so many of their gymnasts nicknamed after birds? Olga Korbut was the Sparrow of Minsk, Svetlana Boguinskaya was the Belorussian Swan, Tatiana Gutsu was the Painted Bird of Odessa...Very curious....
I don't read Russian *that* well but I can transliterate the Cyrillic pretty well and you are correct, it translates to Ludmilovna--daughter of Ludmila. Fascinating! Now I must know the story...must dig deeper... And I was going to comment that GymFloozie was not a very traditional Russian name ;) The Russians tend to give their children the same names for generations (which I love)--Tatiana, Yelena, Svetlana, Ekaterina, Anastasia....No Britneys or Dakotas there!
Patronymic means father name--the middle name of a Russian is their father's name + a suffix meaning either "daughter of" or "son of." Eg., your father's name is Ivan--your full name would be GymFloozie Ivanovna LastName and your brother's name would be Brother Ivanovich LastName. This is true for *every* Russian (eg., Nastia Liukin's middle name is Valeryevna, since her dad's name is Valeri)--it's extremely unusual for a Russian to take their mother's name for a middle name. Very interesting.
I LOVE GYMNASTICS
WOW Liu Xuan's FX presentation was very inspiring and beautiful.
It is so graceful!
Thanks!
That was a beautiful floor exercise, best of the event...

Am I the only one to notice that some chinese gymnasts have a bit more slower, less powerful tumbling? I like it, it's more graceful.
The vault problems just tarnished this entire thing...and the Raducan fiasco...
Wow, an american girl pulled off those vaults!!! Ridiculous judging by the way, but got damn, & she had on the best looking leo. Kristin Maloney!!!
Would have been interesting to see Khorkina interpret liu xuan's music. Or maybe someone like komova or mustafina.

geez elfi was so damn annoying at these olympics...either her mic was way too loud or someone put extra caffeine in her coffee, she's way too hype
Ludmilovna--really? Why doesn't she have the typical Russian patronymic? Does she not know her father's name?
i want to see amy chow's performances geeze what happened that was so bad that they didn't air any of them
