      Barbados brought in mongooses to deal with snakes.
      They more or less killed off all the snakes and then found other food sources such as people's chickens.
      So even if bringing in an invasive species accomplishes what was intended it can still create problems in the long run.

    My mother/grandparents had a cat that we believe was some kind of wildcat. They had a regular domestic cat for years who passed away. Shortly after that, they found a very large cat in their garage and decided to stay feeding him. He was friendly and they eventually let him in, though he remained an outdoor cat, sometimes being gone for days, although as he got older he'd usually return home every evening. They named him JJ. This was years before I was born, though he lived until I was a teenager, and my grandparents house, which I also lived at twice for a few years as a kid, so I got to spend a lot of time with him. He lived 21 years after they found him, as a fully grown and developed cat of undermined age. He weighed about 19-21 lbs through his adult life. Didn't look like any cat I'd ever seen. Despite his weight, he had very minimal fat. His body felt hard and muscular, even his belly. His paws were massive compared to any cat I'd seen. Despite being well groomed he had short, coarse hair. His head was strangely round for a cat, from all angles, like a little melon. His meow was very deep and even with a TV on you could hear him purring from across the room sometimes. He was VERY calm when inside. Just extremely confident and calm. Never playful really, but he did like attention when he'd come around. Really rough scratches like a dog would. He'd sit on my grandfather's shoulder when he watched TV, with his rump on the back of the couch and his head next to my grandfather's head, facing the same direction, and purr extremely loudly. It was adorable. He treated the other indoor cat/cats (my aunt got a cat a couple years after JJ showed up, and for years my first cat also lived there) like they didn't even exist. Was never playful, wouldn't fight, would just walk right by them like they weren't there. He was a generally peculiar cat but his build was just crazy. Looked like a very short haired lynx without the ears, which in his case were very small compared to his head, forgot to mention that. This was in eastern Long Island btw, basically a rural area. Oh yeah, he killed a racoon once. Full sized racoon, they get big out there, I've lived in 5 east coast states, never seen raccoons as big as they are out there. Killed it. Almost died in the process but healed and was fine over time. Crazy. RIP JJ you were awesome.

    Very interesting video. I have read about the Kerguelen Islands before, and took a class in college about the natural history of Antarctica, which covered the Antarctic islands.
    I grew up in a house with too many cats. A few of them left the household and became semi-feral. The amazing thing was, they gained an immense amount of muscle mass. One of them would regularly bring home squirrel tails for the kittens to play with, but he never ate cat food again.
    One got an infection, and, as he was only semi-feral, I was able to capture him and take him to the vet. When we were in the foyer of the waiting room, a dog barked and he shredded the vest I was wearing while I tried to keep hold of him. He was an absolute pile of muscle, much stronger and much heavier than any of the domesticated males.
    One of the females also went semi-feral, and she also gained a huge amount of muscle, maybe a third more than she used to weigh. I put it down to the constant hunting, the better diet, and possibly better cat food from other households. They must have killed a lot of birds too.

    • @jayhache5609
      @jayhache5609 3 місяці тому +14

      Very interesting to read that. I had a indoor/outdoor cat that got extremely muscular and big, compared to his sister. He walked with a strut, as his shoulders and legs were so muscular, and it all made his head look too small for his body. Made me think of the shape of old sabre-tooth cats, but just a smaller version without the sabre-teeth!
      On another note, maybe use a carrier when taking cats to the vet? For their safety and other animals'... and yours! Also, thank you for acknowledging outdoor/feral cats kill lots of birds. They do, and it's devestating for some bird populations. Cheers from WV in the US!

    Ive got a semi feral kitten over here in Australia who he and his litter were taken in as their mother abandoned them. He is 6 month old and almost the same size as my other cat who is fully grown. A couple of places ive worked at thru the years here in Sydney there are A LOT of feral cats which are clearly bigger than your average house cat (Not as big as the ones that live out in the bush) but cats are rapidly evolving in a new environment in AUS into some seriously beefy kitties. Interesting video and topic dude 🫡

    • @a.m11558
      @a.m11558 3 місяці тому +39

      This is very true. I'm from Melbourne and my dad used to catch feral cats at his work when I was a kid and they were almost always huge, like 2 or 3 times the size of a normal house cat. There was one that had really crazy fur and stripes and was about 4 times the size of a house cat. They get to these sizes because they are hunting wallabies and other relatively large animals (for a cat at least). They also have very little competition, only foxes are a threat to them, but some of these feral cats are just as big as a fox, if not larger.

    • @koreyb
      @koreyb 3 місяці тому +23

      45 years ago, a British vessel came down here to New Zealand with two Manx cats on board. In those days the law of the sea 100% allowed people to stop off to repair, or grab supplies without visas, and if they did not tie up to the shore the animals on their vessel were not our business.
      However, the owner of the boat was a very arrogant, entitled and selfish man, not only did he go ashore himself on an off shore island, without clearing customs, but he took his two cats ashore. The first person who saw him told him off and warned him he was risking breaking our isolation and he tee-d off on them about how smart he was, and how he knew better, and how the time he had been at sea on the way made it impossible his animals might have any disease . . .
      And his poor cats paid the price, the Customs heard about it, they were taken off the boat by Customs and Agriculture and destroyed.

      I think he is waiting for his thesis to evolve from the trees he has outside. I am so sick of "intelligent" people claiming things are evolving when they are not. They started as cats and even if they eat everything they will still be cats. You will never find they have changed into a creature we have not seen before and if you leave them alone for millions and millions of years they will either be dead, or... you guessed it, still cats. If this guy wanted to "sound" smart he would use the term micro-evolution so dumb people don't catch on that he is misleading them, oh yeah for normal people it means adaptation. I can line up his "facts" about the cats with ... um the fact that Americans are in general fatter then other nationalities. This can only come about by eating lots ( you know like the cats ) and it changes them, they get fat and die younger ( the cats catch their own food so fitter and stronger ). So what new species shall we claim Americans have "evolved" into? personally I would say they have "adapted" to their environment ( cities and fast food ) but what is this guy going to claim? I think the ONLY argument you could make about people and evolution ( and we are either still evolving or we never evolved in the first place ) is that we are de-evolving. We are weaker and dumber then every generation that preceded it.

    We have an apex predator with few below it, and an apex herbivore in the reindeer.
    I would expect cats to evolve to bobcat or a bit larger, but domestic felines can cooperate far better than the larger cats, as they are very social.
    So I expect that at some point either they'll attack in a group, as lions do.
    Based upon the cats that I have seen go after deer, I suspect some already are trying.
    Ecosystems are seldom balanced, they are frequently changing due to events.

    Intriguing. Actual source of destruction is human involvement. It's apparent that dom. cats mainly control the rodent population there; seasonally they catch chicks. Because this is a fairly recent problem, the island creatures need more time to adapt--as have other island communites, i.e., Corsica, Sicily, Japan, UK, NY archipelago, others. With time, NZ, AUS, HI will also adapt. Right? I applaud the universality of the domestic cat, giving so much comfort, beauty, and rodent control for humans throughout history--human the one species that has no idea where it actually belongs.

      Places adapt by losing their vulnerable species. Those promoting extinctions have little ecological empathy, particularly when prioritising a pest like cats, whose talents fortunately include infecting their hosts (unfortunately not sterilising them always), & unfortunately killing dolphins and livestock. However contrary to the comment they are not necessarily there to stay. They can indeed be eradicated if a dedicated enough program is resourced adequately & followed through with. Local protection during the time chicks are present etc can also help reducing the chance of extinctions. They were eradicated from Reunion there for a start, and participating by assisting providing the wild cats used to train the eradication dogs was a rewarding achievement.

      NZ native plants, animals, reptiles & insects have not adapted as rapidly as the predating invasive species, a fact that is common anywhere where careless, ignorant or reckless introduction of foreign predators has occurred. You're so called "adjustment" of native environmental elements always occurs, but its also always at the expense of the native species they decimate. Show me anywhere on earth this type of introduction has been harmonious or completely beneficial or at no expense to the native species. You can't, because there isn't anywhere on the planet this has occurred & that's also because humans, like your comment, are ignorant, short sighted & simplistic when it comes to the enormous expenses & enormous problems involved to mitigate, at best, against the impact of introduced species. You're so called "solution" & attitude is one that creates a "grey" or single colour type of world & is at the expense of the millions of individual variations & adaptions that nature brings about & of which we have no idea how or why they might have adapted & we certainly don't have a clue as to what benefit it may provide to its immediate environment nor if there is some symbiotic neccessity provided by a specific adaption, let alone how it may benefit our own selfish needs. The biggest issue facing our planet is the opinion your putting forward because it's one in which humans as a species believe, subconsciously or otherwise, that might is right & that effectively, we can do as we please but humans, as a species, are far too ignorant, arrogant, proud & foolish to even know how to curate the very planet we require to exist as well as causing the extinction of an endless list of species of all types before we have even the narrowest clue what part their link provides to make up a chain which may be an essential element to a specific ecosystem & what right do we have to change, remove & deny that to all the species that are reliant or otherwise anyway? Or to deny other humans having a say or choice in the changes we make to this planet? The only justifiable right we have, is at the very least, the right to be ignorant.
      But where this planet & its species are concerned, human beings are also incredibly irresponsible & our thinking is all wrong.
      It should be only at our own expense, which ultimately it will, but it is at the expense of everything on Earth.

      @@DieFlabbergast In Finland alone, it is estimated that there are approximately 1,300,000-600,000 cats (and up to 2 million according to some estimates because about every third Finn has said that they have one or more cats), of which approximately 590,000 are registered and of these only 4,000 are of a certain breed. In addition, it has been calculated that more than 20,000 cats have been abandoned in the wild or belong to a feral cat population, and approximately 7,500-8,000 cats were delivered to shelters every year. Cats living in the wild are alarming because female cats can give birth to 2-8 kittens three times a year and almost reproduces like rabbits. Unfortunately, there is no information about the rest of the cats living in Finland, and therefore there is no certainty about the number of cats living in Finland.
      Instead, according to the law, all Finnish dogs have to be registered and then it is known that there are exactly 803,000 dogs in Finland alone and of these 640,000 are purebred dogs.

      France has 450 provinces. This is a number greater than the number of brain cells which you have employed during this discussion.
      How are you doing? Are you okay?
      Let those cells rest & recuperate. Perhaps you ought to eat something.... Please be careful. You'll need some cells to survive. Breathing is not fully automatic. Don't think about it, though. Just give yourself time to rest. Easy does it.... Never mind. You said something foolish to try to show off your knowledge. You were incorrect. It's happened before & it will happen again.
      No one is perfect. You're a perfect example. Everyone can learn from you!
