Awesome video! Love the song too. “Take only what you need”. Sea of Cortez is definitely the aquarium of the world. - Jacques Cousteau.

Hey, appreciate the comments. I’m a huge fan of proper management to create a healthy ecosystem. I don’t know the status of what it’s like there. I just follow the management plan and rules and regulations when I am down there. Here’s the thing If there is a problem it’s not spearfishing that is affecting the fish population and destroying the reefs. Spear fishing is the most sustainable and selective way of harvesting seafood on earth. I would say if there’s a problem in this area and this reef is not doing well you have to talk to the guys making the rules. Commercial fishing / nets / trollers / those are taking out hundreds of thousand of pounds of fish out of the sea. I took 2 pounds of fish for a dinner I made with friends. I could have bought it as well from the local stores and markets but I think I am doing the reef a favour by not supporting the commercial industry and the reel threat to your reefs.

@@Livingwildjared Thank you for your thoughtful response, I'm going to need to think about this some more before responding. It's a complex issue. I appreciate this opportunity learn. 👍

@@Livingwildjared You have some good points, but when discussing sustainability of spear fishing a small reef, I'm not sure I see them fit as well. Here's how I understand it. Sustainability is a numbers game. It depends on what is being targeted, where it's being targeted (at a reef), how many people are targeting certain species of fish at that place and what the populations are of those species being targeted . Harvesting numbers cannot exceed the population necessary to sustain the numbers of fish at a steady number, avoiding decline or depletion. What that exact number is, I cannot say. The higher the number, the higher the return.
Simply put, a small reef cannot sustain an unlimited amount of spear-fishermen. If there is a limited amount of adult fish living, feeding and breeding at any given reef, say 25 Adult Barred Pargo and 30 Bluechin Parrotfish schooling at a coral reef, how many spear fisherman over time does it take to remove those entirely from the reef?
While it may be legal to take the very last of a fish species living at a reef, it's not right, if sustainability is embraced.
I think it good practice for those who care about reef ecology/sustainability to spend time without a spear, and like a Scientist, survey the reef they plan to hunt to monitor the health of the reef fish community there. Do you see adult fish? Are you seeing few examples of the fish you intend to take? Lack of adult fish or few numbers is often a symptom of over harvesting.
That's my take, I was a huge fisherman, now learning about them through observation. I find the Sea of Cortez a giant library with each fish a book. Sorry my reply took so long.

Thanks for the video. What time of year was this? We just bought a place down there south of Lapaz and I started spearfishing. (Addicted) What I’ve been told is the water gets really clear starting in May and through the summer and that’s the better spearfishing.
