This song has a very special place in my heart. I randomly heard it once (just once!) in the radio when I was a teenager, and then I spent several years of my life (the better part of decade, actually) searching for it at least once every few months. I didn't remember any of the lyrics except for the word "breakaway/break away" (which is surprisingly commonplace in song lyrics) and was just holding tight to the increasingly tenuous memory of the song to move forward. To me, this song is the living embodiment of my ridiculous levels of stubbornness.
Hey glad you found it! I know the feeling of endlessly searching for that 'earworm song' when you only have a few lyrics to go on. I totally forgot about this track and only stumbled-on b/c that advert 'don't take away my breakaway' came to mind for no particular reason lol.
American here, I know of Grimsby thanks to Laurence Brown and his UA-cam channel Lost In The Pond. He lives in Chicago now but mentions his hometown often. Cheers!
I've only heard this song on the radio, but never in my childhood in the 80's. Just incredible to believe this song is from 40 years ago now. It's still cool!
Thank you for this. Not many people know she was a singer and a great one at that (Her style for all the naysayers). Wish she kept her musical career going but a talent such as she can't be confined to just one genre.

Tracy Ullman was brilliant! Multi-talented, she could do everything and was really fast on her feet witty and sharp! Breakaway recalls the early sixties, go-go dancing girl power, a great pop song in itself, it could have been on the charts in '63!--Pitch perfect, the outfits, the big hair--I was around in those days and this nails it!
Break-a-Way was written in the 60s and realesed by Irma Thomas in 1964 in the USA as a B side to a top 20 hit single. It didn't make the top 100. Ullman's is a cover version.

Yes... she was a pretty big deal over here , then she went to the U.S.A. after that she kind of dropped off our radar. Apparently she did o.k , t.v work , married , children etc.....
She was bank-rolled by her millionaire husband to get on the telly over there. The Simpsons were NOT her creation. The Simpsons would have been a success without her.
Doesn't make her any less talented .... He might have bank rolled the production ... but don't you need viewing figures for a show to run... but then what do I know
You make it sound like her husband's a big American mogul - he was a Scottish TV producer. Tracey Ullman has been at the top of her profession for 30-odd years and is worth £60 million - you don't achieve that with a marriage! You obviously don't like her shows that's personal taste but come on, credit where credit's due!
This is an Ullman's song that is a fine sensation,is one of Tracey's very coolest - Her great music demostrates how she has such an amazing gift creating very great appealing sound.😊❤
this song was written by Jackie de Shannon (aka Sherry Lee Myers) who grew up in Batavia, Illinois (my home town and my parents' home town). my father had a jewelry store downtown and gave music lessons part-time...Jackie/Sherry was one of his students or so he says. as i love Tracy Ullman's many talents and always had a crush on her back up singer on the viewers right, i can think of nobody more worthy of Jackie's/Sherry's song, presumably written around the early sixties...those great days of all-girl groups.
Writing this for the record. I have heard about Tracey Ullman many times in the past. But never knew who she really was. But now I have been watching a lot of videos of her, and I have now realized how great she is. I am very glad to have found her talent. Breakaway/Tracey Ullman 歌詞和訳
[Verse 1]
I made my reservation
I’m leaving town tomorrow
I’ll find somebody new
And there’ll be no more sorrow
That’s what I do each time
But I can’t follow through
[Chorus]
I can’t breakaway
Though you make me cry
I can’t breakaway
I can’t say goodbye
No, I’ll never, never breakaway from you
No, no
[Verse 2]
I’ll make that vow to myself
You and I are through
Nothing can change my mind
I’m sorry won’t do
That’s what I’ll say each time
But I can’t follow through
[Chorus]
I can’t breakaway
Though you make me cry
I can’t breakaway
I can’t say goodbye
No, I’ll never, never breakaway from you
No, no
[Bridge]
Even though you treat me bad
And many cruel words are spoken
You have got a spell on me
That just can’t be broken
No, no
[Verse 3]
I’ll take your picture down
And throw it away
There’ll be no baby
Now for you to call each day
That’s what I’ll say each time
But I can’t follow through
[Chorus Repeat 2]
I can’t breakaway
Though you make me cry
I can’t breakaway
I can’t say goodbye
No, I’ll never, never breakaway from you
No, no
[Outro]
I can’t breakaway
