Is anyone else bothered by how badly Linus seems to handle review hardware lately? I mean, I get it. They get it for free but there's no need to throw monitors, CPUs and graphics cards aroun.
I also noticed it, smashing the screen, rotating it very rough, etc. When I got my new monitor I handled it like a baby, I still don't dare to touch the glass ;)
yeah me too, came here to say that. even his little tap at 5:41. his hand going up got me.. then it was just a tap. but i would still never tap a monitor like that >.>
Yes... in csgo you don't play like call of duty (aka a high sensitivity) csgo is much more about recoil control, precision at long distance, and preaiming around corners and stuff than most fps games are. that's one of its appeals
most cs players play at 800 dpi or dots per inches.... I think that's what it stands for... and my in game sense is 1... however I play at 400 dpi and 1000dpi with my Logitech g502
I wish the big tech channels would cover less of the crazy super high-end stuff. (this video isnt the best example as this monitor isnt outrageously priced) I want to get excited about things I can afford; not a marketing stunt for brand attention or products for people with more money than sense. (no offense to you rich guys out there, but even you have to admit you're not always practical) I know I'm probably the weird one here but I would like to see some more normal product videos.
Charsept the unfortunate reality is that the high end components have larger margins and therefore have more marketing budgets to push out content like this. I can almost guarantee that tech tips got the monitor for free and possibly a kickback. Yes, midrange products sell more in terms of volume but are far less profitable. that said, I would also like to see more affordable products more often
I would ALWAYS save money to get a high end/high midrange product. It makes no sense to me to go low end just because you can buy it within a short time frame rather than something higher end that would last years. Often times I see people save money for like 2 months and then cave and buy garbage. I'm glad I spent time waiting to get something better. (assuming you live in a country where hardware prices don't cost limbs on the black market, aren't struggling to keep food on the table, and don't have mountains of debt. Even with these stipulations many people just can't save money. Not everyone who buys high end products are "rich")
Charsept Have you ever heard of the channel RandomGamingHd? if u dont know it you maybe want to check it out, he makes great videos about parts wich are not crazy expensive. I dont think its weird that you want less crazy high-end stuff.
I find enjoyment from trying to stretch lower end products to their limits. Get the most out of something 'cheap'. For example, I'm an avid fisherman. I have multiple rods and reels. Yet I've never spent more than $40 on a rod or reel and almost never more than $4 on a lure. This philosophy spreads to everything. Cars, computers, housing, etc. I'll never buy the best of anything because it feels wasteful and I take pleasure in the challenge of making the most of lesser things. Putting these restrictions on myself makes me get creative and more efficient. Now I may not always buy super low end stuff all the time. But at the very least, I'm a mid range guy through and through. It's not a matter of money (even though I am pretty broke), it's a matter of principle.
+James Oldfield not if it were 4 individual panels with zero bezel width. that has been done before, but it took a monster PC and special software to run, along with very limited media options to display

Can you do a video to investigating the benefit of using gaming monitors or other gaming accessories like mice? Do they make you a better player, or more likely is it just a placebo.
Jim Harol thing is its not asus who makes the screen. Acer and asus screens are the same. But asus often has better menu controll and better calibrated colours at the start. Basicly you should wait some months for the manfacuter iron out the.prolems and hope you dont get an early one
I must be one of the lucky ones. I've been purchasing ASUS motherboards and other products since their Socket 3 board in 1994. Since then I've RMA'd one product. And kept most of them well past their warranty periods in working order.
If they are side by side it's quite easy to tell. 240Hz monitors are one of those things you will only really utilize during twitchy moments where fractions of a second count. Other than that its like cruising around town in regular traffic in a Charger Hellcat.
well, also if ure have to work for a realy long time on screens. like medical monitoring (one of the reasons, why the realy high end stuff often still runs on CRTs.
I'm not buying another Asus monitor based on your review, Linus, no matter how much they paid you to praise it. I got PG279Q and I couldn't even return that back-light bleeding piece of shit.
I bought this exact monitor Asus ROG Swift PG258Q 240hz Here is my quick review: Build: Quality build is good but mostly the display port problem is the biggest issue. Performance: 240hz is really noticeable unless your reflexes are quite slow. I played on the same monitor 60hz vs 144hz vs 200hz (because my older gpu can only manage and supports 200hz), I really can tell the difference between 200hz vs 144hz in both browsing and gaming. Every time I activate the Overdrive system to extreme, there is not much motion blur. You can even read text in your browser even if you move/scroll the window up and down. To be honest 200hz with OD to extreme is already like a matrix (slow motion). Just think if 200hz is like that, what more for 240hz? It is crispy smooth. Color: One of my biggest issue on this monitor is the out of the box color as you need to calibrate it to be a good looking TN monitor. The modes on this monitor ain't the best but the FPS mode is quite good for PUBG only needs to lower the brightness a little bit. My first impression coming from another 2009 hp tn monitor was the color looks washed away, so I read a calibration guide. Brightness is also my issue here as it looks way too bright. ULMB looks good in actual only if you can reach 144hz consistently. Downside: You can't activate gsync and ULMB at the same time. Calibration settings: Racing Mode, Brightness 0 to 17, Contrast 50, Color Temp. User mode, Gamma 2.2 is the best. Dark Boost=0 unless you wanna play PUBG or dark games just to see enemies clearer. Adaptive contrast control= mostly disabled or depends on what you are doing. Blue light filter=0, 3 if reading or in a dim light (4 is too much redish screen as this monitor mostly warm in colors) Overdrive=normal if you are just doing simple task, extreme is for fps (matrix mode).
Hey guys see the two links below for detailed TFTCentral reviews of this panel (1920x1080) vs the 200hz acer predator z35 (up to 2560x1080). Summary: this Asus or the benq or aoc version is faster if you are strictly looking for the lowest display lag and fastest response time. see below;
in case anyone has a 200hz predator z35 here is the review. I will reply in a sec with the TFTCentral detailed review of the AOC version (exact same panel) of the Asus pg258q from this video. www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/acer_predator_z35.htm
Here is the review of the exact same 240hz panel. Asus, AOC and BenQ all are using the same 240hz panel www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/aoc_agon_ag251fz.htm. This 240hz Asus pg258q is definitely faster (avg response time avg of 2.6 (lowest was 1.0gtg) vs 9.0ms and 240hz vs 200hz) than the 200hz Acer predator z35 which came out in Jan 2016. in case this helps anyone who enjoys the super detailed reviews oscilloscope etc. This is really only for those twitch fps gamers where you play on low with single or dual ( insert high end card here) just to ensure you stay above 240fps on overwatch, bf1, bf4 obviously. you would be giving up VA for a TN with the extra response reduction and lower display lag of course.
Travis Law Both 1080p, both 240Hz, the ASUS is 24.5 inch and the AOC is 25 inch. The AOC does freesync whereas the ASUS does GSync, although I'm sure there's a GSync version of the AOC. The AOC is cheap and actually available at the moment, whereas the ASUS' RRP is higher than the AOC sells for and isn't actually for sale anywhere in England yet, if anywhere at all. What facts do I need to check?
He has to be sure that the product is suitable for the common consumer, which means it had to be durable. ESPECIALLY since it costs more. If he recommends things that breaks often its bad for business and for the pc community
Its like getting a $5000 dlsr, at first you feel its gonna break by looking at it. 3 years later you know the ins and outs of photo equipment and throw it around like dirty underwear because you know it can take it.
Yes, this! That's exactly why they don't dare question him. He has captured a good chunk of the viewing market for comp hardware on youtube. Companies don't want to jeopardize that.
i got this monitor kinda long ago now and ... it’s a game changer having 240hz monitor in general.. lower input lag when hitting 240 fps or even higher .. g sync adds input lag so better to turn off .. so as ULMB so apparently it’s better to be set to fixed refresh or whatever its called .. if u can’t hit a stable 240fps or even higher then don’t bother buying it
@@iElixirr okay i have another question... im building a dedicated streaming rig also. with ryzen 5 1600.... what gpu could i get away with? it needs to be the cheapest possible
Seems like a great way to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. That dudes mouse is WAY too slow. Downloading pro configs doesn't actually make you good. Enjoy making those 60 degree flicks, because that's the max you will be able to make 😂😂😂
Again... BenQ/+ZowieGear did the 240hz for 500$ at 1080p, first. Plus instead of gSync they had their own sync tech. that could work for whatever gpu you wanted. Noone ever did a video on that though, so it's not liek I know what the experience is liek but it's BenQ and zowie gear so I would think it's kind of worth it, 500$ and all.
Noone NEEDS to make video about that. Everyone expects zowie to be at the top... I am not saying the video shouldn't be made. But I don't need to see it to know what to expect from Zowie.
I thought that refresh rates only mean that when playing a 60hz game on a 60hz monitor you use its full potential. If you play a 60hz game with 240hz does it make a difference?
Red boy if you play a 60hz game on a 240hz monitor its the exact same as playing a 60hz game on a 60hz monitor. But there really are no games which are only 60hz
Hz in terms of gaming are measured in the outputted frames per second (FPS) in terms of games. There arent any games released in the past decade that can only output a maximum of 60 frames.
For me, I always loved high FPS recording (I play mc pvp). There were 60 FPS recording, 120 FPS, 240 FPS, 360 FPS, 480 FPS, 600 FPS, 720 FPS and 1080 FPS. So 240 FPS would make my dream come true without seeing the blur on recording
Hey Linus, What would you say would be better: This 1080p 240hz monitor or asus other 1440p 144hz Monitor. I have a current 4k panel and its just not doing it for me. I have 1 1070 atm Might upgrade to sli
100% wrong. The total input lag times as recorded and detailed on places such as tftcentral is what you should look for, *not* the headline pixel gtg response times. Asus' 1440p 144Hz IPS turned out to have just as quick a total input lag time as the TN one from the year before, meaning no advantage for that particular TN (which is the fastest around) over that IPS (which is also the fastest around). Please learn stuff.
It was in this news article that Linus was slick talking to some dude that ended up stomping the shit out of him. Linus is trying to say it was something else but this article tells the truth...eleccafe.com/tag/linustechtips/
I think I'll get better hardware in my case at that price, for now, my 60hz screen works fine. Just got my 1070 installed! (Totally better than a new monitor, also it's ~5000% faster and 3x bigger than my old GPU. I'd say always replace the things going out of standard first. )
you have no idea what this video is about do you? this video is not abbout being accurate or prsonal preference, it's about showing off higher framerates, which is muc more noticable with hhigher sensitivity. turn the sensitivity all the way up and then yank the mouse across teh table as quick as you can, that'll show how much the higher framerate does for oyu.
7:00 You can clearly see the switch to 144 Hz caused the screen to flicker on *this* monitor. Some flaw in the tech, or the monitor isn't made to implement it properly. Human perception needs 85Hz, above that benefits peter out quickly. Put on top of that that even 1ms (gray-to-gray timing now) TN panels have slow black-to-white timing, far below 60 Hz. All that matters is the speed of the pixels. When BtW timing is back up there with CRT monitors @ 85Hz, we'll be back to when monitors were good for gaming. Until then, all that matters is the speed of the panel and >=85Hz support.
Which is why I'm fine with my 1080p 60 hz monitor alongside my gtx 1070. Overkill? Not really, Some games get fps as low as 40 with a gtx 1070 at ultra settings at 1080p. So yeah, I did make a good choice.
You know that if you just put a slight cut in the tape on the bottom of the box that when you flip it over the air comes in and you avoid the vacuum. The inside package slips out easily.
I like how he says SOME OF THE INFORMATION CAN BE 16MS BEHIND!!!! in reality 99percent of people wouldn't notice the difference.....Theres 1,000 MS in a full Second.
I have a 144hz gaming monitor. I tried 60-100-120-144hz and nothing made a difference to my eyes or mouse feel. 60hz is really enough for some people. As MASKOAA said, there is 1000ms in a second and we are talking about 0,0xx second differences here...
sotajumalaa just curious what cable were you using? Did you make sure you modified your setting in your nvidia control panel/amd catalyst (fun fact a lot of people never do it and they play on 60 hz)
Zinedine Prime wow i didnt know that thanks for letting the whole world this secret that 240hz is better than 144hz. How do u have so much knowledge on monitors? Recently sum1 told me another secret that 4k resolution is better than 1440p too and i was shocked.

1000ms/75 Hz = 13.33 ms
1000ms/120 Hz = 8.3 ms

Can you do a video to investigating the benefit of using gaming monitors or other gaming accessories like mice? Do they make you a better player, or more likely is it just a placebo.
Dan Bodine yea sure i loose games not because i am a noob but because my monitor refresh rate
***** That's what I have been saying for some time, but I still think a "proper" study should be done in the name of science.
get a decent mouse and a 144hz monitor and you'll definitely notice a difference, but it's not an "increase skill" button
Matthew Wu So if doesn't make you better why would you buy?
Dan Bodine same reason as buying a 10000$ watch a titan xp
hey, any plans to review the AW2518H?
Asus' quality control is questionable at best.
indeed it is indeed it is
Jim Harol thing is its not asus who makes the screen. Acer and asus screens are the same. But asus often has better menu controll and better calibrated colours at the start. Basicly you should wait some months for the manfacuter iron out the.prolems and hope you dont get an early one
i'm loving the Acer Predator series
I must be one of the lucky ones. I've been purchasing ASUS motherboards and other products since their Socket 3 board in 1994. Since then I've RMA'd one product. And kept most of them well past their warranty periods in working order.
Asus is hit and miss for me, I do have a mobo from them made back in 1999. Called the P3B-F.
I own 3 of these for my gaming setup. The 27in is so worth the month. Such a beautiful picture.
No complaints here. Worth the money.
Can anybody else agree that it is hard to tell refresh after about 120 hz?
If they are side by side it's quite easy to tell. 240Hz monitors are one of those things you will only really utilize during twitchy moments where fractions of a second count. Other than that its like cruising around town in regular traffic in a Charger Hellcat.
XaviarCraig I would think that would be the case. On my 144hz I can't tell past about 120. It feels great though.
well, also if ure have to work for a realy long time on screens. like medical monitoring (one of the reasons, why the realy high end stuff often still runs on CRTs.
I'm not buying another Asus monitor based on your review, Linus, no matter how much they paid you to praise it. I got PG279Q and I couldn't even return that back-light bleeding piece of shit.

This is making me drool
I bought this exact monitor Asus ROG Swift PG258Q 240hz Here is my quick review:
Build: Quality build is good but mostly the display port problem is the biggest issue.
Hey guys see the two links below for detailed TFTCentral reviews of this panel (1920x1080) vs the 200hz acer predator z35 (up to 2560x1080). Summary: this Asus or the benq or aoc version is faster if you are strictly looking for the lowest display lag and fastest response time. see below;
in case anyone has a 200hz predator z35 here is the review.
You guys know the AOC AG251 monitors have had these specs since before ASUS announced this monitor? It's also cheaper than the ASUS screen.
Travis Law ???
Travis Law Both 1080p, both 240Hz, the ASUS is 24.5 inch and the AOC is 25 inch. The AOC does freesync whereas the ASUS does GSync, although I'm sure there's a GSync version of the AOC. The AOC is cheap and actually available at the moment, whereas the ASUS' RRP is higher than the AOC sells for and isn't actually for sale anywhere in England yet, if anywhere at all. What facts do I need to check?
TheRebel3000 do you think you can find the AOC version with G-sync? cuz I wanner get that but can´t find it with g-sync anywhere!
Yeah, but Asus.
Travis Law AOC´s 240Hz monitor is the same panel as the Asus in this video! The AOC is just a Freesync version!

Why is he so rough with the stuff. If I was that company I would be sending him emails to take give some respect to free stuff.
He has to be sure that the product is suitable for the common consumer, which means it had to be durable. ESPECIALLY since it costs more. If he recommends things that breaks often its bad for business and for the pc community
well company are afraid he could just decide: meh, fuck this company
Its like getting a $5000 dlsr, at first you feel its gonna break by looking at it. 3 years later you know the ins and outs of photo equipment and throw it around like dirty underwear because you know it can take it.
The common consumer is going to be slamming around an expensive monitor? And please don't reply "it could fall" or any horseshit similar...
Yes, this! That's exactly why they don't dare question him. He has captured a good chunk of the viewing market for comp hardware on youtube. Companies don't want to jeopardize that.
i got this monitor kinda long ago now and ... it’s a game changer having 240hz monitor in general.. lower input lag when hitting 240 fps or even higher .. g sync adds input lag so better to turn off .. so as ULMB so apparently it’s better to be set to fixed refresh or whatever its called ..
if u can’t hit a stable 240fps or even higher then don’t bother buying it
if i have ryzen 7 2700x and evga rtx 2070 xc should i get this monitor?

Oh i thought this thing was like 700$ or 900$, nvm linus.
But it is 800$ as pre-order in the UK.

Pepe The Frog except roblox
Hz in terms of gaming are measured in the outputted frames per second (FPS) in terms of games. There arent any games released in the past decade that can only output a maximum of 60 frames.

+Trump I think during CES Linus said that 4K 144Hz one requires two Quadros to drive, which I don't think he has on hand.
you do not need any more than 60fps at 4k tbh

25" is perfect for 1080p. If this monitor had been 1080p at 27", it would have been even worse.
25" 240Hz and just 1080p and its not even cheaper than the 27" big brother with 1440p and 165Hz

What a stupid question... What a trully idiotic question... Did you actually think it would be 4k with 240hz???
Michal Valta tbh i would. Monitors are way overpriced anyway, but this ones gsync as well so it brakes any wallet
240hz that is crazy plus
G-sync
Who buys a dope ass monitor and expensive PC just to play old shitty games?
Warren Quick It may be old but it's not shitty game
Old =/= Bad.
If you're not playing CS or Quake Live on your 240hz gaming monitor, you bought 180hz more than you needed.
brosephjames every game benefits fron 240hz... if you can't see the benefits then your eyes got problems
Which is why I'm fine with my 1080p 60 hz monitor alongside my gtx 1070.
Overkill? Not really, Some games get fps as low as 40 with a gtx 1070 at ultra settings at 1080p. So yeah, I did make a good choice.

You probably never played on 144hz monitor then because it does make a hell of a difference.
I actually had a 120hz TN panel...its nice but from a SMOOTHNESS factor not a response factor. That part I couldn't feel the difference.
I have a 144hz gaming monitor. I tried 60-100-120-144hz and nothing made a difference to my eyes or mouse feel. 60hz is really enough for some people. As MASKOAA said, there is 1000ms in a second and we are talking about 0,0xx second differences here...
0.00x*, these are literaly nothing as differences, as 30 fps is playable
