- Bihar is a place full of history and spiritual significance. Located in the eastern part of India, the state is known as the land of monasteries and derives its name from the word "Vihara" (Monastry).
From the awe-aspiring ruins of the world's first residential university of Nalanda to the remains of ancient Patliputra, from age-old temples to revered dargahs, Bihar is a land blessed with ancient monuments, pilgrimage sites, natural wonders, and vibrant cultures that make this place worth visiting.
Two of India's most glorious dynasties, the Mauryas (321-185 BCE) and the Guptas (320-550 CE), flourished in the ancient Bihar region, which was then known as Magadh. Buddhism originated and thrived in ancient Bihar, as Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. Lord Mahavira also belonged to this region and attained his Nirvana at Pawapuri. Among Hindu religious places, the Vishnupad Temple in the Gaya district of Bihar is one of the most prominent pilgrimages for paying homage to the ancestors. The Ramayana and Mahabharata, the grand epics of India, have numerous tales associated with various places in Bihar. The author of the Ramayana, Valmiki, also belonged to this region. The tenth, Shri Guru Govind Singh Ji Maharaj, and the Takht Shri Har Mandir Ji Sahib was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to commemorate his birthplace.
The enchanting land of Bihar has a variety of attractions that draw visitors from all over the world. One can visit the Buddhist Circuit, Jain Circuit, Ramayana Circuit, Sufi Circuit, Hindu Circuit, Sikh Circuit, etc. for pilgrimage purposes or to enjoy the sheer beauty of the archaeological remains and the unspoiled natural surroundings of this ancient land.
