Using IL-2 as a fighter isn't that much surprising considering: 1)P-47 is much heavier aircraft. It has slightly more powerful engines and much shorter/thinner wings though ie better aerodynamics; 2)good pilot on IL-2 had a few tricks up their sleeve to combat fighters. Problem was in surviving long enough to learn that and general low training of IL-2 pilots; 3)that early IL-2 had its gunner removed due to time and engine constraints... which got thousands pilots and soldiers expecting air support on the ground killed. So don't cheap out on essential features, kids; 4)it's one of the very few adequately armed soviet planes that was used irl en masse for majority of the war. Most soviet "fighters" have pathetically light armament. Especially in case of those armed with 37mm motor cannon that was hard to aim for everyone, but aces; 5)irl there were two evolutions of IL-2 - fat IL-8 and "more of the same" IL-10. So all in all, IL-2 CAN be made into adequate fighter if you split the project into two, with light bomber and with multirole fighter-bomber with cut down wings, no rear gunner, properly hidden landing gear and internal bomb bay akin to YaK-9B. Would be a real monster;)

Actually, in game it's one of the best fighters at it's br in ground rb. Because noone climbs there, it's wings have a huge surface area, allowing it to outturn most fighters and the 23mms OHK anything. And the gunner-less 1942 is better than any of the Ms, due to it not wanting to constantly fall out of the sky. Also, I would like to disagree about 4). Sure, soviet fighters didn't have amazing armament, but by far not pathetic. Most actually had better guns than the bf109.

When yankees flew with 6-8 HMGs, brits with 4 autocannons and nazis with 4 autocannons plus 2 HMGs, soviet pilots had to survive in mad setups like 1 autocannon(and you'd be lucky if it won't be 37mm with overpowering recoil, low rate of fire, small ammo supply and ability to warp its own barrel whenever it wants) and 1 HMG. WTF?! Where are mass produced wartime fighters with 6 UBS HMGs? Or 4 ShVAKs? Where are pre-war fighters with more then 4 ShKAS's?!(and before you mention its rate of fire, brits were already strapping 8-12 rifle caliber MGs to their planes to survive and both brits and germans were moving towards autocannons. 8-12 Brownings translates into at least 6 ShKAS. Even if we forget the abysmal lack of reliability of latter). So yes, I call it basically betrayal at what soviet pilots had to deal with. No wonder Aircobra was so well received despite orders to blame lend lease equipment for propaganda purposes, lol:))
@@TheArklyte Not exactly. Mid war, the most common soviet fighters were the La-5 variants with 2x20mm and yaks with 2x12.7mm hmgs and 1x20mm autocannon. Which when compared to the most common fighter of the luftwaffe, the Bf109F/G, which had 2x7.92/13.2mm mg and 1x20/30mm cannon (out of which the 30mm on the late Gs was only really suitable against bombers due to it's poor accuracy and velocity) was actually fairly similar. Definitely not "pathetically light". The british Spitfires also weren't too much better off. With the most common mid-war models having 2x20mm cannons and either 4x7.7s or 2x12.7s. And those were wing-mounted which offered lesser accuracy, as opposed to the russian fighter's and bf109's fuselage mounted guns. So while not the most well armed, they definitely weren't "pathetically under-armed" .
1:20 just a VERY handy tip for anyone watching. If you are facing M10/Achilles and struggle to penetrate it from the front for some reason, load up HE round. I've tried this with many tanks and if the gun is 75mm or above HE or HEAT round will one shot the tank due to some form of over-pressure likely related to open-top turret. This also applies to Wirbelwind and both Ostwinds. I'm not sure about M36.

Nape fetish is a japanese thing. The reason behind it is something along the lines of: nape is mostly covered by hair or something, when it's not then it's a rare encounter.
I love the IL-2 with the 23 mil cannons, because it can out turn just about anything, and everyone head ons you expecting an easy kill. It's so easy to farm points with it.

Early Il-2s without the heavy armour are actually nimble as hell. There were plenty of times where I just whipped around and swatted out of the the sky whoever was trying to threaten me - both in Air and Ground battles. Only issue is prolonged turning since it bleeds energy quite quickly, and it's energy upkeep is meek. Albeit I do need to say I did not use MEC at that point yet.
You seriously undersell the IL2 in game. That thing can 100% dance with fighters I got as many pane kills as ground kills in it and it's one of the finest ground attackers in the game. I have no clue if that is remotely true to life, but it's good in the game. At least at low speeds anyway. It's so agile at low speeds compared to contemporary planes.

Can I just say, I absolutely love the churchill I. I WISH there was a higher tier version with the same armourment and higher armour because that casemate 75mm? I think it is... is hilarious to use. The amount of times a thin skinned vehicle charged me and I just boop them with the casemate is enough to probably buy enough golden eagles to get a single premium... probably the Mk.5 AVRE because bada boom.

I'd get it if you were in an actualy ground attacker, like a Pe-3, an A-20, or even a P-47, but not a "ground attacker" that can literally outturn a spitfire.

The Il-10 is such a cool plane in War Thunder because its basically a faster, more manevourable version of the Il-2 especially the later model.
If your GPU is AMD try the Amernime drivers, better than stock AMD drivers.

The IL 2 is one of the best fighters for ground RB. Feels great clubbing fighters in this thing after bombing a few tanks.
