Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading, I'm Elissa and here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow and process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit. We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
Our goal each season is to preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating, fermenting and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
Avoiding single use plastic, chemicals and artificial fragrances is important to us and we are trying to live an older style life, balanced with this modern world.

Hi Elissa, could you please tell me where you purched the wire rack for your presto canner? I burn my fingers a lot when I make jam. Lol 😆
Diane, I have added the link in the video description for you to purchase, make sure you choose the size to fit your canner, it is certainly a helpful addition to the waterbath canning process.
@@MoatCottage thank you so much.
You know what I love about you that I would like to incorporate into my life? Sitting. Sitting whilst you preserve or prepare food or make tinctures. I always feel like I have to be on my feet doing everything, but why? Why do I have to? Well, I don't have to. You look relaxed and you're just enjoying your time. I love that about you. Thank you. 💜
Thank you Elissa . You explain so well in anything to share . God bless you always for your super talents 😊
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind feedback Tracy.
The fig jam looks delicious.
It is Jean, hope you and your family are well.
Oh I do love a fig...been making then for a while now..soso good with yoghurt and many others things..put in a bowl add port and warm up..OMW..so so good...tfs
I am totally on the same page as you with serving suggestions! 💯
They look delicious!!
They are Su Ra, thanks 😊
My fig tree is only young. Can't wait to get figs from the tree.
Hi Elissa. I’m reigniting my canning journey after 30 years. Love ya work. You sound Australian but you are giving US measurements. Is there any chance you could give the poor old Aussie viewers the metric version ’on the go’? ❤ Also…. We’re you ever a presenter on Playschool? I’m sure I’ve seen you on the telly in the past. 🤔❤️❤️❤️
For some reason, I'm still not getting notified when you post a video! Bear with me - I search for them every few days now. You fig jam looks delicious! My neighbor has an established fig tree, but they don't pick the fruit - I might offer them some fig jam if they'll let me pick them this year.
Hello Carol, I’m sure your neighbours would be happy to get some jars of fig deliciousness.
I’m not sure what is going on with YT, I am sending notifications through them, but I know they no longer send all out 🤷🏻♀️ and this is happening across the platform for many channels. Thanks for keeping me updated on it, I like to know what’s happening from your perspective and your experience here on YT is important to me.
He'llo, wen are you going to do another, muscovy ducks, video? (updates)
Hey Orlando, I have a Muscovy Duck video coming out Sunday. I know it’s been a while since I’ve done a duck video and my next one will be small but I am also working on another longer one too.
Thank you!!!
Hi
Can you please tell the amount of figs in proportion to the sugar you add?
How long do you cook then the syrup?
Thks
G’day Elissa,
Is there a reason you cool them down & then heat them up again?
They look delicious!! Would be great over Icecream!!
I was also going to ask if there was some advantage to let them cool and then reheating them.
Edit to add. I just remembered that I had two Ball books, so I checked, and that is the instructions, to leave for 8 hours, or overnight. No explanation given. 🤷♀
I was following the book for this video and like @TraceyNoble said, there is no explanation.
When I make preserves, I often slow cook without water and don’t let them cool down before jarring up, saving many dishes and stiring time. 🥄
@@MoatCottage I have to add, as I was watching you make this, I was thinking that a fig chutney using dates instead of sugar would be delicious. Maybe with pear added too. Yum.
@@traceynoble6080 I love that idea Tracey, the more delicious ways to preserve foods for our shelves, the better and especially with way less sugar.
Would this work for raisins? Please let me know!
Can I add walnuts? When? Thx
