It’s seems that Abaya Caran De may have misunderstood his wife’s intentions. Wasn’t she fulfilling the guru’s (Bhaktisiddanta Prabhupada) order to distribute books which she did when exchanging tea for Srimad Bhagavatama?
She didn't distribute Srimad Bhāgavatam to some inquisitive seeker but simply sold it off as plain paper and rags to the ragpickers or kabadiwalas (as said in India).... So that's outright offensive against the Srimad Bhāgavatam Mahāpurān
