- A man was hit and killed by a light rail train in downtown Minneapolis Saturday morning. Authorities believe the man may have lost his balance while fighting with another individual and fell onto the tracks as the train approached the platform.

Would have been better is he light rail system was elevated as CTA light rail is in downtown Chicago. Tunneling would be too expensive.
Except for the downtown area, Denver light and commuter-rail systems have limited contact with streets except at regular grade crossings. Safer and faster though not perfect.
Mpls/St. Paul began the rail game too late and with little forethought.

No No No, what you guys need to start doing is charging people for rides and allowing only those with bought tickets to ride it. Allowing no homeless person in the train. They need to find a way to execute this, otherwise no innocent person wants to ride the horrendous little light rail train the city provides. At the moment, anyone can ride the train, and that should be illegal to do and they should be prosecuted for it. The reason why City buses are not as bad as light rail trains is because the city bus has a bus driver in it and will prosecute the person who doesn’t pay, homeless people don’t have the money to ride the city bus, and so making it safer for workers and people who actually needs to take the bus to get to places, like work, or their homes, making it safer for all of them. Light rail just isn’t the safe option because any homeless crackhead can take it and basically they have no where to go so they love staying in the train to relax and sleep and do their drugs. After knowing what happens to people in these trains it makes me not ever want to take one again, so yeah, good luck with trying to get innocent people to take a horrendous stinky train.

This isn't a fair evasion issues. These people buy fentanyl and crack all the time, they can afford a $2 train ticket. A lot of incidents in NY subways take place between passengers who paid for their fare. It's a poverty and drug use issue.

Like other #US cities, #MetroTransitMN still haven't pursued a light #metro (i.e. medium-capacity #metro; DIFFERENT from light rail) project for a new line so they have a mode that can be more reliable than LRT (and even BRT) yet can be easily automated, provide better passenger safety features, and system not interrupted by surface vehicle traffic. Passenger safety features e.g. platform safety barriers, track intrusion sensors, etc. Even #hnlrail Skyline that is opening Phase 1 of its system on June 30 is fully automated and has platform safety gates at every station. With existing surface-running LRT, since track intrusion sensors are technically not feasible, #MetroTransitMN could at least install platform safety barriers (doors, gates, etc.) and fare gates (for platform safety barriers to be effective with defining physical boundaries between passenger (protection from being run over by an LRV) and public areas (risk of being run over by an LRV)) at every LRT station to improve passenger safety in some (NOT all) aspects so incidents like this won't easily happen again (or happen ever again if every LRT station is fully enclosed with full-height platform screen doors).
