    Thank you for the tip on blowing out the collets - that was new to me. Hope you have a great day, too.

    Nice approach. If they didn’t have the melamine attached, I suppose you could approach it like using a planer sled. Flatten as much of the first side, flip it over and put onto a sheet good of your choice. Then flatten the second side. After that you can slide it down a few feet to flatten the remainder.

    Thanks for uploading this - it's the little bits of information you share that are so helpful for those of us who don't know what we're doing. Keep the CNC/Vectric videos coming!!

    That tray is a fantastic feature! This is a great overview Jay, your * at the end is spot on for any length of machine or slab. Thanks for sharing.

    I like the tray. I have an x-carve and use the foam packaging from mag switch featherboards in a similar fashion. The foam is shaped like a tray and I slide that under before swapping bits. Helps protect the tips if they fall

    Thanks! It’s nice you can program the CNC to do the work for you, that must have been a heavy table.

    I'm willing to bet you could also build the spoil board to mount on linear slides so that the whole slide rather than just the work. Maybe add a set of drop-leaves at each end (kind of like Frank Howarth's setup) so that it isn't constantly 15 feet long. You're option would be a helluva lot cheaper and obviously works well in a pinch, but if you're doing it on a regular basis the rails would be fast, accurate, and repeatable I think.

    i once made a table from 2 lengths of 3M solid oak worktop back to back and thought that was impressive but this table is on a whole new level

    Could use use something like several precision matching blocks under the unsupported idea? Each end supported at least 18" inbord?

    I would attach a DA sander to the CNC head for an additional pass, letting it do all that work would be amazing

      Indeed. I've seen a few options but haven't tried anything yet.

    That looked fantastic. Do you know how they decided to handle the low spots in the corners of the bottom? I assume just sand it smooth and not worry about it, since you didn't take any more off the rest the table to bring it down to that level.

      This one will get a flood coat of epoxy on both the top and bottom before install. Because of which, we didn't put as much attention on the bottom as the top.

    I wrote a flattening/surfacing g-code script of a couple or so dozen lines. I modify values for X/Y min & max positions, cut depth, end mill width, stepover, feed rate, maybe a couple more variables, save it and run it. No need to use Aspire/VCarve/whatever, just pop open on the controller computer in a text editor to edit the variables. It presently is set to spiral outside to in, first with a single complete outside "loop" pass but then after that only running in the direction of the grain which eliminates most of that cross-grain tool mark at the expense of "cutting air" as it traverses from side to side to do either climb or conventional. PM me if you're interested in it.

    Jay... Please tell us about the new dust boot/collection assembly. I have the same setup (AVID 4' by 10' Pro) and am currently using a Kent CNC boot. Your 3D printed solution w/clear tubing has me intrigued. It looks like the best option to date for AVID owners. The Kent is good, but its asymmetrical side hose connection can sometimes cause minor usage issues.

    How long did the whole process take?

    • @JayBates
      @JayBates  2 роки тому +4

      About two hours but there was a lot of talking and not working time. Each run of the full size toolpath took 14 minutes. That's 49" x 124" x .100" DOC
