Everyone gripes about the sound on that album, but those riffs are some kick ass riffs. Even St Anger has some sick riffs, and of course everyone complains about the sound on that album. Go figure!
@BallTistic Screecher Great riffs though,I don't care how crappy people say those albums are, especially St Anger. But I also don't dissagree with their opinions either, they are justified.
@BallTistic Screecher i don't care for the start stop style they used, i mean that's the structure of the song they've gone for, and not all the songs uses that, and for the sound, just listen to the guitar hero version man, i have it and it sounds much better, yes i know for an album from a major act in 2008, sound quality shouldn't be discussed, it should be top notch but they screwed it up, but there's the guitar hero version anyways so no biggie
Dont tread on me has always been one of my favourite Metallica songs. Mainly because of the awesome melody in the chorus and because of that sick riff after the solo.
MANNN that struggle within riff is the first thing that came to mind when I read the title. I got so pumped knowing that you think it's awesome too. I usually rewing that part like five times since it's so short and I can't get enough of it.
The God That Failed is even more overlooked because you can't just grab any guitar and play it for it to sound good, it's supposed to be in E flat standard tuning. Though it is super kickass if you do tune your guitar to E flat standard.
Ride the Lightning has some absolute pearlers in there! For example, the pre-bridge riff on Trapped Under Ice. Controversially, the chorus riff on Escape speaks to me - as simple as it is! Can you also do a lesson on the No Remorse intro solo please? It’s definitely up there for it’s power and drive
Phew... I saw your fb post the other day asking for suggestions, and meant to mention that Through the Never riff cause it's way underappreciated. The push-pull feeling you get when playing it really stood out to me when I was a young highschool kid back in the 90s learning how to play guitar. When I saw your video I was kicking myself for not mentioning it in the fb post, but super glad you included it!
Good one Ben! Kinda crazy that 'LICA have so many killer riffs they can seemingly just throw an extra one into a song for a fleeting moment, never to be heard again. And they're always so good they could be the main riff of another tune. I've always Loved/Hated those once-and-done parts.
Of Wolf and Man, the riff that's right towards the end of My friend of Misery, and the part of The God That Failed where James growls "God that Faiiiillllllled, Follow the God that faaaaailllledd Yeaah, yeaaah, broken is the promise, betrayal, betrayal, yeah. That riff during that part of the song.
@@BenEller Well I hope mabe one day you will throw that one in an "Another 5 riffs from the Black Album"🤘😎🤘 Love your videos Uncle Ben,it's good to be the king.
When you started describing the last riff, I paused it and said, "I will put money down and guess that he's talking about the post-solo riff in Struggle Within." When I was right I shouted with glee; that's probably my favorite riff on the album. Thanks uncle Ben :)
If you watch the documentary "A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica" you can see James recording the guitars for Sad But True and there is a section where he plays the low D chord and the 2 chugs only, to make the riff sound heavier. I also think this was a suggestion by Bob Rock. Turned out to to be one of the nastiest riffs ever.
I love the through the never riff it has such an awesome feel to it. To me its one of those riffs u can play in your sleep and never miss a note becauae of its simplicity but really catchy.
Great vid Uncle B! Another Metallica song Ive seen/heard played wrong is Whiplash after intro, “1234, 1234....” thing... then where the fast low E ride kicks in and the accompanying 3to4 descending chord bursts. Cliff’em All clearly shows how James played it live with a lil hammer-on at end of cycle. I think it’s interesting how simple it is but people play it in various ways.
I love that you're giving the Black Album the love it deserves. A lot of Metallica fans dismiss the Black Album because they only consider songs like Nothing Else Matters, Unforgiven, Roam, and Sandman, but they ignore how may badass and awesome riffs, solos, lyrics - just songs in general there are. In that sense the Black Album is kind of underrated honestly, so I think everyone who likes Metallica ought to listen to this album the entire way through before they form an opinion on it. Also, I'm glad someone else other than me notice that the sickest 'Tallica riffs often come right after the solo, especially The Struggle Within. Hell, overall Struggle Within is such a big bad motherfucker I can't believe so few people pay any attention to it, like you said. Anyways, thanks for this video, Uncle Ben, I didn't think I'd be writing a paragraph about how much I love the Black Album tonight but here were are. You rock dude, keep on doin what you're doin. P.S. I'd love to see a Weekend Wankshop breaking down some of Kirk's lesser appreciated solos on this album
While the black album has some cool songs and kickass riffs, I still find it pretty bland and I always have. Even when I first got into Metallica before I knew there were people who dismissed it I thought it was boring.
There's a cool little riff in My Friend of Misery, actually there are a few cool riffs in that song, but the one I'm referring to is at about 6:00 during the last solo in the song, another example of a riff that only lasts a couple of measures and is never heard again.
I’m not ordinarily a fan of the Black album but this video has inspired me to revisit it. You have done a fantastic job of capturing The genius of Janes’ rhythm playing!
When I saw the title of this video, I knew that Uncle Ben would stuff that awesome Struggle Within riff at the end of the video. Compositional gold, just wasted away. My early teens had angst from never hearing that riff enough.
The bridge from Through the Never was a great choice! It has always been one of my favorites from their entire catalog. So fun and satisfying to play, too.
When I saw you were going to make this video the first riff that came to mind was holier than thou for me. Awesome to see it was first on the list. Also on the sad but true comment you made in regards to the tuning, if you watch the documentary metallica did for this album you can see James playing like a surf green guitar during those parts and notice that the guitar has a really thick string too. Never realized how low it was actually tuned!
After seeing all the comments on insta I was super hype to see struggle within get on there and also glad to see someone else be ballsy enough to say that’s one of their favorite riffs from Metallica. lol good shit sir good shit
I clicked on this video in hope that you found a hidden little riff that I found a long time ago, but I was disappointed :( Check out Wherever I May Roam, after the 2nd chorus at about the 3:40 mark, right as the lead guitar comes in to play the little bridge before the chorus repeat into the solo. If you strip the lead guitar out of that section, you can hear a nasty little riff in the background that is NEVER played again through the entire song! I first noticed it when I was a kid playing Guitar Hero Metallica, and for whatever reason, just straight up stopped playing at that part. It cut out the lead guitar and just left this little sick ass riff in its wake. Totally check it out!!
That riff from Through The Never is my #1 Metallica riff. I love the chugs and the sliding. I feel like it was a sign of the groove direction that they went after the black album (which I didn't like it all). Great video!
Fantastic video Ben! My heart belongs to the black album. I can’t deny it. Would you consider making a series of black album solos? I would only trust you with this task.
Top 5 in my opinion. 1. Through the Never after the solo 2. The God that Failed main riff 3. Holier than Thou main riff 4. The God that Failed second riff 5. Don't Tread on Me main riff

Those two chugs in Sad But True are shown being recorded in the A Year and a half movie, on this Danelectro baritone. :) Loved this video! And yes, these riffs are all fantastic!
hey ben, me again. i also just want to say we have very similar taste in favorite riffs from this album. itd be cool to see you do this for the others.
This was a great idea for a video and I was so happy to see through the never on there. I think it would be interesting, and a fun challenge, to try to do this for St. Anger. Obvious problems with that album aside, I would argue that there are some really great guitar riffs on there, I love the one on Invisible Kid.
"they always seem to put a killer riff right after the guitar solo" Holy shit, killer observation. Favorite riff of MoP is that little harmonized scale chug at 6:19
