Disgusted with myself as a proud dundonian not knowing much about this man ...but considering myself very lucky catching up fast with his amazing talent
MICHAEL MARRA Michael's earthy Scots humour carried his songs to great lyrical heights, maybe even Parnassus Hill. A bard full of good stuff like marmalade and Dundee cake; Why isn't this guy a world star? What does it take? Maybe down in London they found him hard to understand. I suppose he was a wild Caledonian soul looking in a glass darkly and seeing it half full, you can imagine Robert Burns nodding approval. There should be a statue of Michael Marra in Dundee by Ian Hamilton Finlay, some pigeons on his shoulders, and a Donald Dewar traffic cone over his head just like the one in Glasgow, his Socialist home from home.
As staying in Perth I love this guy, only found him recently, but worked in Dundee as a community worker in Whitfield for 4 years and loved it. I still come to a corner and if I hear 'meh' I am not sure if I will encounter a flock of sheep or a bunch of Dundonians. Hermless is amazing, a Caledonian equivalent of John Prine's 'Hello In There. 'The Lichty Nichts' in a song!
Great post to remind us of a national treasure. What a legacy.
Lucky enough to have seen Micheal and St Andrew live . Great concerts ! Great memories! Thanks so much for that !
