The use of the “tongues” as the first revelation of the graboids, and the careful framing of them as distinct smaller creatures through the early part of the movie makes the reveal really, really effective.
Grad student means graduate student. She's trying to achieve a PhD, a doctorate. And the term seismologist is a real word. We have a lot of earthquakes in the United States.
@@Dave-hb7lx True, but this the field of seismology. So she's going for her PhD. Because just like geology, seismologists normally work for oil companies. And they don't hire too many seismologists with masters degrees.
One of the very first giant monster movies I watched growing up! The idea of the movie came from Brent Maddock and SS Wilson, whom were in the Navy. They were sitting on a large rock in a Nevada Nuclear Test Site and one of them said, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let us off this rock?" And thus TREMORS was born. RIP, Fred Ward, 1942-2022
I think Fred was just wondering why it took so many hits to get the nail embedded into the wood. Holding the hammer at the end, it would normally take only about two strokes of the hammer.
They dubbed lines to get it form R to PG13 , way more F word in it and Victor Wong got the shop name changed , not the old days where you could hire token asian guy , like in Airplane James Hong plays Japanese ww2 soldier , but in that movie whole scene is a joke.
There was a Tremors spin-off TV series on the Sci-Fi Channel and when that was on they had a website had all the information on the biology of the Graboids. They are actually a prehistoric squid that adapted for life underground. They also have a very long life and hide as eggs for decades, which is why they are not often seen.
I love that the survivalist is played by Michael Gross, who at the time was known as the liberal father of conservative Alex Keaton, played by Michael J. Fox on the 80s TV sitcom Family Ties.
This was filmed outside of Lone Pine California, on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. I have a friend that lived in Lone Pine at that time and he somehow got one of the "prop rocks" used in the movie. They were made of styrofoam and light as a feather
Yep, the first rock they're on is real the others were fake, and other than the wind picking them up and they had to be chased down while filming, they worked great lol
As to your question about guns. If you are a citizen and can afford them... and live in a state that isn't insane. You can get them just about as fast as you can afford them lol.
Back in the day, fizzy drink bottles had separate plastic bases glued to the bottle to keep them from tipping over. When recycling became popular, the bases were discontinued in order to save on plastic.
On the topic of collecting guns: In most states here in the US when you go into a gun store or other store that sells guns, you can take home the rifles and shotguns the same day you buy them. You just need to pass a background check. Before you can buy the firearm you fill out a form, the store then contacts the FBI to run a background check through the "National Instant Criminal Background Check System" (NICS). This can take from a few minutes to three days. If you pass the background check you can buy and take home the rifle or shotgun. Handguns follow the same procedure with an additional wait time in 12 states. The length of this time varies by state but is typically 5-10 days. So, if you have the funds to buy the firearms, you could get them all in a week or so. Assuming you do not fail the background check (no felony convictions, etc.).
Tremors refers to tremors in the ground. Also, the technique of not immediately showing their monster gained popularity upon the release of the movie Jaws.
That's not exactly true, a lot of monster movies from the 1950s would be 50% of the way through before the creatures would be shown. Especially the big bug movies like Them! and The Deadly Mantis.
I would argue that isnt exactly factual. Jaws had a ton more shark footage filmed but the director realized how bad the shark looked. By minimizing screen time and maximizing the effectiveness of the quality of what was actually shown it greatly improved the effect. The result is the same either way. Much better. Less is more.
I would like to live in that environment simply because it does not get too humid, but it can get cool in the winter. Being in a hot and humid place with lots of rain and storms, I crave the dry and the cold and the open spaces like in this movie. As for "learning these things," there used to be some books more widely available before the internet got popular. Army-Navy stores were sources as well as military handbooks. At the same time, checking some out of libraries might get flagged.
3:36 - "Did he say grass dude?" - He said "grad student". 18:26 - "Look at the bottom of that bottle of juice, it's got a flat bottom. I've never seen that before." - When 2-liter soda bottles were first introduced in the U.S., they originally had a sort of "cup" pressed/glued onto the bottom to give them a flat bottom. These were made out of the same type plastic as the caps, and were usually colored to match the bottle (green for Sprite, blue for Pepsi, etc). At some point they stopped using them, probably to save money. I didn't know any company was still using them in 1990, but that's what it looks like to me. 19:57 - "What are you making?" - It's device to clean and polish used bullet shells so that they can be reloaded. It vibrates them in sand, which is abrasive. 22:38 - "Told ya they were clever.Disabling your Jeep." - Not really. It attacked the Jeep because it was making noise after it accidentally sent off the alarm. The next three movies are also worth watching. Tremor 2 and 3 are sequels, while the fourth one is a prequel. After that, the movies went downhill and they switched to using all CGI for he creatures. There was a one season TV show on the SciFi Channel, but it was pretty corny. in 2018 Kevin Bacon returned to film a pilot for a Tremors TV show, however the show never got made, and the pilot has never been shown. You can find a trailer for it on UA-cam.
It was filmed about an hour and a half away from me. The town was just a set, built on some private land, the buildings are now gone. There's still some debris at the location though.
The girl is a Grad Student (not 'Grass Dude'). When they say 'Grad Student' it's short for Graduate Student...a Graduate Student (aka 'Grad Student') is someone either pursuing a Masters Degree or a PhD. A student in Med School ('Medical' School) pursuing an MD degree (Medical Doctor degree) or a student in Law School pursuing a JD (Doctor of Jurisprudence degree) can also be described as a Grad Student. Also, yes, 'Seismology' and 'Seismologist' are indeed words. Not to come across as 'that guy', but these are words I've known since I was a child. They are common words. So, I thought you were kidding when you puzzled and asked if those words really exist...lol.
@DawnMarieX The movie is supposed to be in Nevada, but mostlikely California. It's the Mojave desert which is in Arizona, California, and Nevada, I used to live there and it would be about 38°c is fall. Of those states, Arizona is your best bet for land and buying guns, if you stay out of Phoenix. You could get all those guns, with a few exceptions, as soon as you were a citizen and had the money. Sheep would be your best choice for livestock and you can have an irrigation well for water especially if you were in the hills. I could go on. Burt has been my hero since I saw this in the theater.
Fun fact: movies shot more than 30 miles from LA means the actors get paid mileage fees for shooting "On Location". Vasques Rocks, those slanted rocks during the Gorn fight in Star Trek and Bill and Ted's Bogus Adventure, are at the edge of the mileage range (25 miles), so they get a lot of use in movies and TV.
The worst way to die: To be eaten to death.. It doesn't matter what is eating you if you are alive; a lion, tiger, bear, shark, ants, or even flesh-eating bacteria...it all has to absolutely suck.
The drawing on the dvd cover may have been from a concept drawing prior to making the movie. That said, the actual look of the creature had probably not been determined yet.
There's a gun show near me (Virginia) almost every weekend, you could easily build up an arsenal like that (with maybe the exception of fully automatic weapons) in no time.
If you moved to Nevada(like the movie) and became a US resident, the easiest way to purchase a firearm is to become a US, and state resident. From there you could just go through a background check for each purchase. Each state has different gun laws. Or, you could also take classes and get a concealed carry permit for the state, great for protection, good place to start learning. You could also purchase as a non-US resident, but there is a little more paperwork and hoops to jump through. Also, plenty of places like you described in Utah and Nevada, but wind will always be a constant.
I dated a girl in college from that area. It's in a high desert region of California, Alabama Hills region. Every single guy I met, teen and up, from the area, chewed tobacco.
This was followed by five sequels, a prequel and a TV series. Other films with Kevin Bacon include Animal House, Friday the 13th, Footloose, Hollow Man, A Few Good Men and X-Men: First Class. The actress playing Mindy is also in Jurassic Park
In most states, the only thing keeping one from having an arsenal like Bert and Heather is lack of money. That is a very expensive collection of guns. There is federally no requirement for training or licensing to own a gun, or many guns. There is no limit to the number of guns one can own. "Elephant gun" is a bit colloquial. It's a rifle meant for hunting big game, with elephant being the largest representative example. Calling something an "elephant gun" is a shorthand way to say that there is no animal on land that the gun is incapable of killing. "Seismologist" is a real word. It's from the Greek "seismos" meaning earthquake.
If you liked the filming location, you can see it in many movies. Many of the scenes for this movie were filmed near Lone Pine, California, in the Owens Valley, just east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The scene with the road crew was filmed on Lubken Canyon Rd, about 5 miles south of town. It's a fun road to drive down at night 😀
You don't have to be trained or licensed for guns in 'Murica. You just have to have money, an ID, and be able to pass a background check. Sometimes just the money'll do.
A seismologist studies the movement of Tectonic Plates (Earthquakes). Tremors are gentle shifts. The Area they shot in was in Nevada. Great Reaction, Dawn Marie!
It would be very easy in the U.S. and very costly. An Elephant gun has been used in the past to hunt and kill pachyderms. Seismologists are scientists who study the movements of the Earth. As a California resident I've had my share of earthquakes. By the way, A small earthquake is also called a tremor. Thank you again Dawn Marie for being so adorable and so much fun to rewatch movies with. 💖💖💖
I'm pretty sure that the inspiration for this movie came from an old TV program from the1960s called The Outer Limits. In one episode these astronauts on Mars were being terrorized by a "sand shark", that traveled underground.
The actor who played Burt is best known for playing the dad on the 80’s sitcoms Family Ties which is the show that made Michael J Fox famous, he played Michaels dad. The little girl on the pogo stick played the granddaughter in Jurassic Park. What we call station wagons you would call an estate.
18:27 ...your comment at the orange crush soda bottle...yes 2 litre soda bottles used to have flat bottoms and even metal caps. The shapes they have nowadays are relatively new starting in the mid 1990's.They began phases out of the flat bottoms to the style we have today.
Dawn wants the specific odor details!! Mrs Gummer is Reba McEntire dubbed the QUEEN of Country!! Looks like the seismologist is the one who "BRINGS HOME THE BACON 🥓" 😅 Great Channel Miss Marie!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
I literally got water up my nose because I was drinking it when you said "Seismology? Sounds like something they made up..." I'm guessing there isn't a lot of geological activity in Scotland? I've heard about seismologiets and seen siesmographs in real life a few times, even as a kid. And have seen a hundred scenes in movies and TV talking about seismologists. And have read countless news articles about seismologists saying this or that set off the seismographs. Such as atomic bomb tests, volcanic explosions, earthquakes, meteor strikes, dam collapses, and more. Also the ground shaking is called a "tremor" and the creatures in the movie cause a lot of those, hence the title. You need to watch more disaster movies, Dawn!! I bet you would be fun watching those.
I saw this in theater and there were a bunch of drunk bikers sitting in the back. Every time Reba was on screen the biker would yell "yah Reba"! I can't help but hear them everytime I see this movie.
Little fun fact: This was Reba McEntire's first ever movie she acted in. During the gun room scene, she never once fumbled any of the guns between takes.
Dawn Marie, Your wish is my command: Most of the scenes from Tremors were shot around the town of Olancha, between Ridgecrest and Lone Pine in central California. Viewers of the film can experience the majestic backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and its expansive desert terrain, offering unparalleled views from every angle. If you are visiting here in Central California and you really like the heat, you really need to visit Death Valley. The name says it all. Usual temperatures are about 120 F/49 C. Crazy hot.
If you want a place like this, just go to any of the places near Lone Pine, CA where it was filmed...like maybe Tecopa Hot Springs. Sadly, there's no structures left from the film to visit.
The little girl (Ariana Richards) played Lex, Hammond's Granddaughter, in Jurassic Park. ** The Gummers are polishing brass, in a Brass Polisher (go figure). They re-load their own ammunition.
Most states in the US you can put together a collection like that pretty quickly as long as you have enough money to afford them. What she was doing with the sand shaker thing with brass casings in it was cleaning the empty shell casings. Lots of people who are into guns reload their spent casings. Not only is it cheaper in many cases than buying new ammo, you can also tailor your loads (powder charge/bullet type and weight) to where it performs best in your specific gun. If you ever come to the US, visit Las Vegas. The land scape around vegas looks just like this movie. Nevada is a very pretty state.
On a federal level, you first have to get a state permit And that requires a background check. If you pass the background check, then you’re able to get a firearm in the US. but just like you said, each state has their own rules and regulations beyond that point. Also, training is not required, it’s DEFINITELY recommended But not required.
it may not be the best movie ever, but it is one of the best written and directed movies ever. the script is taught in film writing classes as one of the most perfect scripts
The movie was filmed in the high desert area of California, near Bishop. We used to camp in the mountains there. The high desert has a beauty all it's own.
They said Grad, as in graduate student. Not grass. fyi. But you tangent was worth it. all your aspirations can be realized in Texas and probably anywhere in the southwestern US. The farm, the guns, everything you mentioned, etc. Elephant gun is a large caliber gun used to hunt big game including elephants.
Seismology is a real science and seismologists are real professionals in that field. They study movement in the Earth’s tectonic plates that cause earthquakes. The device you saw that was measuring the vibrations the Graboids caused is called a seismograph, they are used to measure, detect, and research earthquakes. NASA even took some to the Moon during the Apollo missions in order to see if there are moonquakes and to see what readings they would get if they hit the Moon with parts of the rockets used to take the astronauts there. Turns out, there’s not a lot of geologic activity on the Moon, but it helped answer some questions about it.

One of the very first giant monster movies I watched growing up!
The idea of the movie came from Brent Maddock and SS Wilson, whom were in the Navy. They were sitting on a large rock in a Nevada Nuclear Test Site and one of them said, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let us off this rock?"
And thus TREMORS was born.
RIP, Fred Ward, 1942-2022
3:16 Kevin Bacon did this on purpose without telling Fred Ward, that’s why Fred looks at the post funny when Kevin walks away.
@@ronfehr7899 In a blooper reel he keeps missing the nail completely, they probably hammered the line down between takes and he just lets go of it
@ronfehr7899 hate to be pedantic but it's actually a staple, not a nail.
@@alexg1778Thank you for correcting me. I knew that it had another name, but I couldn't remember what.
This movie is a masterpiece. The "behind the scenes" is a masterpiece as well. 😊
There was a Tremors spin-off TV series on the Sci-Fi Channel and when that was on they had a website had all the information on the biology of the Graboids. They are actually a prehistoric squid that adapted for life underground. They also have a very long life and hide as eggs for decades, which is why they are not often seen.
"You broke into the wrong GD rec room you bastard"
I love that the survivalist is played by Michael Gross, who at the time was known as the liberal father of conservative Alex Keaton, played by Michael J. Fox on the 80s TV sitcom Family Ties.
@brettmuir5679
As the graboid was in it's last 2 seconds of life, that was when it knew . . . . it had f'd up.

Elephant gun is exactly what you think it is, it's a large bore gun that shoots a shell powerful enough to kill an Elephant.
Enjoying the armed survivalist image of Dawn (who’s scared of walking across the grass).
A desert survivalist, perhaps?
Called tremors because the antagonists are giant carnivores wormlike creatures that cause seismic tremors when they move
This was filmed outside of Lone Pine California, on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. I have a friend that lived in Lone Pine at that time and he somehow got one of the "prop rocks" used in the movie. They were made of styrofoam and light as a feather
Prop rocks 😅 amazing
I would love a life size model of a Graboid
Right off of the 395.
Yep, the first rock they're on is real the others were fake, and other than the wind picking them up and they had to be chased down while filming, they worked great lol

As to your question about guns. If you are a citizen and can afford them... and live in a state that isn't insane. You can get them just about as fast as you can afford them lol.
Even a non-citizen can pass a NICS background check, as long as they have a permanent resident visa.
@@Stevarooni Very true! I forgot about that lol.
Back in the day, fizzy drink bottles had separate plastic bases glued to the bottle to keep them from tipping over. When recycling became popular, the bases were discontinued in order to save on plastic.
Completely forgot about that! .. they did indeed have plastic on the bottom
They are called "GRABOIDS."

The little girl is the one who figured things out with the computer at the end of Jurassic Park!
@@JohnsrageI realize that, and that's why I said that the technique 'gained popularity.' It had been used before, but not to such extent.
@zackgallardo Thanks for that information. I guess I was thinking more of the finished product, the amount of time that the shark was seen on screen.
"You can’t tell me the success of Kevin Bacon isn’t somehow tied to his name. You’re not going out to see a Kevin Hot-Dog movie.”

I'd watch a Kevin Hot-Dog movie, but I'd probably skip a Kevin Coliflower movie.
18:25 I forgot about those. 2 liter soda bottle used to have a black cap on the bottom to make it flat because the clear bottle was round like a dome.
I'm glad to see Dawn do this one. She's going to enjoy it so much. I hope, anyway.
I did 😏
I would like to live in that environment simply because it does not get too humid, but it can get cool in the winter.
There were a bunch of these movies and a TV series. I've only seen this one.
When I first seen this movie in the theater, I know it was gonna be one of my all-time favorite movies. Thanks for the reaction. It was great.
The worst way to die:

It doesn't matter what is eating you if you are alive; a lion, tiger, bear, shark, ants, or even flesh-eating bacteria...it all has to absolutely suck.
The drawing on the dvd cover may have been from a concept drawing prior to making the movie. That said, the actual look of the creature had probably not been determined yet.
I had to pull out my copy and look. I always thought it was one of the smaller biter tongue things...just incorrectly sized.
I think Dawn may have gotten cross wired between the Tremors cover and possibly Lake Placid.
@@mblackwl I mean I get why she was confused when the monster showed because the cover definitely shows something with a bunch of teeth.
(Re looks at DVD cover.) Yeah, my bad. The grabboids on them have a bunch of teeth, despite not having them in the movie.
@@mblackwl I really think it's a bigger version of the tongue biter things + teeth. I noticed they both have the little black eyebrow horn things.
Im just here to hear her say "crocodile" all movie 😊
I dated a girl in college from that area. It's in a high desert region of California, Alabama Hills region. Every single guy I met, teen and up, from the area, chewed tobacco.
this is a good classic movie ...... easily watchable and good laughter
When they were making this movie it was actually called "Dead Silence"... They change the name Tremors after it was filmed.
Hence why their are so many mass shootings and School shootings
One of the first of it's genre to take the whole thing not so seriously. For that it deserves kudos, as well as it's other virtues.
An elephant gun was used to hunt elephants when the British first started colonizing Africa. Mostly now only old or nucience bulls are hunted.
Dawn, I knew it was right on the tip of your tongue. So close. The little blonde girl was the somewhat older blonde girl in Jurassic Park.
Three of my favorite movies with Fred Ward "The Right Stuff," "Uncommon Valor" and "Miami Blues."
My favourite shot of the movie implies the couple in the basement are the next victims... until the camera pans to the wall of guns.
This is one of my favorite movies. I’m so happy that you reacted to this video
I'm pretty sure that the inspiration for this movie came from an old TV program from the1960s called The Outer Limits. In one episode these astronauts on Mars were being terrorized by a "sand shark", that traveled underground.
Most people are too young to remember 'The Outer Limits " , " We now return control of your television set to you "
The Graboids remind me of the sand worms from Dune but smaller
The actor who played Burt is best known for playing the dad on the 80’s sitcoms Family Ties which is the show that made Michael J Fox famous, he played Michaels dad.
The little girl on the pogo stick played the granddaughter in Jurassic Park.
What we call station wagons you would call an estate.
Everybody is so young in this movie. I had forgotten Reba Mcintire was in this. And the Asian guy with the funny eye from "The Golden Child"
He's also Egg Shen in Big Trouble in Little China.
18:27 ...your comment at the orange crush soda bottle...yes 2 litre soda bottles used to have flat bottoms and even metal caps. The shapes they have nowadays are relatively new starting in the mid 1990's.They began phases out of the flat bottoms to the style we have today.
Your reactions are so entertaining. Tremors is a fun movie, doesn't take itself seriously, but still has good characters and storyline.
Tremors is great! ❤

The terms you were wanting to say are, "Self Reliant and Self Sustaining"
I literally got water up my nose because I was drinking it when you said "Seismology? Sounds like something they made up..."
I'm guessing there isn't a lot of geological activity in Scotland?
This is a classic! Action and comedy.
Love it.
Great movie that I have seen more than a dozen times. Really glad you enjoyed it!
Little fun fact:
This was Reba McEntire's first ever movie she acted in.
Crazy hot.

Always try to be prepared. We live in a crazy, beautiful world. Elephant gun is a way to be prepared 😮😂😅😊
Love every single one of your reactions! Makes my day! Thanks!
24:50 Miss Dawn can you say “the Worms will take over the world” ten times fast? You Scots say “werms” funny. 😂
The second Tremors film is good too.

Your personality and commentary is a breath of fresh air. You seem like you'd be a really cool person to hang out with. Greetings from Texas.
Also, here in Texas you can basically buy as many guns as you want. You just need to have the money to buy them..... Which can get pretty pricy.

all your aspirations can be realized in Texas and probably anywhere in the southwestern US.
This movie always makes me think of bugs bunny traveling underground.
