Sadly, Catholic persecution was a real history. Many people died because of it
Yeah thats terrible.
Joseon (or the old kingdom of korea) where Wolshim (past Dohee) and Yisun (human Guwon) live have Confucianism as religion. They only read and study Confucious work. So when Christianity started spreading in Joseon... the Catholics meet in secret. But the royal family got scared of the teachings of Christianity including their beliefs that everyone is equal. You see Joseon is heavy on Class System with the Royal Family on top (treated like gods), the nobles, the mercenaries, the entertainers and the slaves at the very bottom. So this new religion is a threat to this 'class system' hence the royal family ordered to persecute all Catholics. This was known in history as the 'Sinyu Persecution' that happened in 1801. According to korean history, the persecution was ordered by Queen Jeongsun herself.
