Black Sabbath invented an entire genre, reinvented itself several times during its career, lasted much longer, had Ozzy, Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio, Bill Ward, Cozy Powell, Vinny Appice, Geezer Butler and Glenn Hughes in the lineup, man... Not to mention that their classic songs are original and not copied from others. Led Zeppelin is very good, but Black Sabbath is much bigger.

When the Levee Breaks is the Zeppelin song that got me into them at 14. Like a levee breaking, Zeppelin was a force of nature that no one could hold back.

Bonzo’s drum track on Levee Breaks is so solid that it doesn’t even need a song. I sometimes air the drum track on my radio show just by itself.

I did indeed. Also on Neneh Cherry’s “Trout” which duets with Michael Stipe and opens with the guitar from the start of Steppenwolf’s The Pusher.

Zeppelin is the most influential band in music history. No other band has had a bigger impact on musicians and music. Their music is still current 50 years later and still played daily on the radio. They were just magical

Most influential band in music history has to be The Beatles..... as much as awesomely great Zeppelin was, that honor goes to The Beatles, I gotta admit. I'm a bigger fan of the Zep, however. 😊😊

The break on “How Many More Times” the oh Rosie! Is very close to being the most hip hop thing I’ve ever heard… and the second verse on “The Lemon Song” the bass and drums and Robert sounds like he’s seriously rapping it’s insane how ahead of their time they were about of things!

Great account of the band. Zepp's music is still as relevant and enjoyable today as it was back then and this is apparent by how much fans, new and old, still appreciate the music. The epitome of rock and roll; groovy, sexy, cool, and largely unmatched. The greatest that ever was and ever will be.

Having four older brothers, Led Zeppelin was the first band I found myself. I bought Led Zeppelin IV on record at a garage sale, and I still get awesome vibes from hearing that noise (kind of guitar record scratch?) just before "hey hey mama said the way you move, gonna make you sweat gonna make you groove." Same with that intensifying rhythm sound before Immigrant Song (I bought Led Zeppelin III in the discount bin at the record store on cassette for $4 in 1991...one of the greatest investment of my life).
Those are some awesome finds man!!

Physical Graffiti as whole had me shook. The restraint in Kashmir and the sheer attack in songs like the Wanton Song and Sick Again showed Bonzos ability to fit the song perfectly. Their also drum tracks that if i heard isolated i could tell which was which
Every song on IV is quintessential Zeppelin. That said, Four Sticks is the greatest deep track of all time, IMHO. It is an exceptionally amazing Zeppelin tune
The Rover is the second greatest deep track of all time, BTW, but it's from another album of theirs, of course
John Paul Jones bass playing is indeed of a class all its own. As a pianist Jons is remarkable.
I always appreciated him back then but when he joined Them Crooked Vultures in like 2009 he really reminded us of his greatness.
John Paul was probably the most complete musician in Zeppelin.
In 1983 or 1984 (I was 10 or 11), my sister, who was 7 years older, gave me a copy of In Through the Out Door. The first song on In Through the Out Door is, of course, In the Evening. It completely blew me away. I had never heard anything close. Page's solo sounds ata couple of places like he threw the guitar down the stairs. Brilliant, and totally a main component in my becoming a guitar player. And of course, a Zeppelin fan for life.

I am a huge Zeppelin fan since 82' and had no idea that bonzo's drum beat was that instrumental in so many genre's and His answer "not really" at the end of the video tells you that music is from the heart and soul and you have it or you don't.
I never got to see LED Zeppelin but I got to see page and plant in 1998 walking into Clarksville at the Civic arena in Pittsburgh.
I saw that tour in Boston. Still the greatest show I've ever attended
9:17 British rock in the 60's always had its roots in black American blues. We listened, borrowed, improvised and took it to a new level. But we never forgot our roots.

Atlantic Records did not "take notice of Zeppelin's live shows." Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler were approached in NYC by Jimmy Page and Peter Grant with Led Zeppelin 1 in hand. Wonderful documentary.
Four Sticks!

Bohnam set the archetypal rock drum beat but so many people who try to play him don't really understand what he was doing and that he did it purposefully and differently or didn't do it at all depending on the song being played.
That technique was playing behind the main count on his snare drum in what is essentially -- in his case as a right handed drummer -- a right hand led flam where the left hand hits the snare slightly or even majorly after the hi hat hit which is directly on the count.
This technique gives a fatness to the beat and he varies that delay somewhat from song to song with some songs like "Black Dog" and "No Quarter" having delays you could drive a semi truck through.
The effect is a push pull feel where your driving forward but also being restrained simultaneously. "No Quarter" is interesting because in the break down part he stops using the delay entirely giving a sense of urgency in that section where propelling forward compositionally is required.
He also uses it on songs like Fool In the Rain which is why so many people who play that song muck it up in terms of replicating it. You cannot play Fool In the Rain without that flam snare delay but what makes it even more challenging is his ghost note on the half time shuffle is dead on a count. So the push pull is both on hi-hat and on snare simultaneously.
Indeed it's his liberal use of delays on snare and even cymbal hits and where he starts a roll that really makes Bohnam a master of the subtle variation that has massive effect without calling attention to itself.
Compositionally Bohnam was a genius because it was what he didn't play that really separates his approach. The song ALWAYS came first.
Old school hiphop artists have a very wide palette of musical taste.
Lots of them are outside rock, into classical and jazz too which makes sense as they used to sample those very same artists.
They suck big time can't even play an instrument are compose there own music.

Plant's harp playing on "when the levee breaks" has reverse echoes as an effect so it's hard to reproduce live.
May I suggest an edit in postscript? Certainly in relation to "Levee" being sampled.
The Drumulator drum machine, made by UK company E-Mu, offered a "Rock Chip" Eeprom upgrade - owners could snap in a chip of 8-bit Bonzo samples taken from "When The Levee Breaks".
And so, THIS set of samples was used by plenty of artists in the 80s; you can hear it on Tears For Fears "Shout", and the whole of Cocteau Twins' "Treasure" album.

EVERYONE skips over _Four Sticks_ and _The Battle of Evermore_ when they talk about the fourth album. Is it just that nobody understands them? They're two of my favorite tracks by any band, period, and definitely at the top of my Led Zep list. 🤔🤨🧐😠

What about a video (or a couple, if one would be too long) focusing on tracks like Battle of Evermore, Four Sticks, Down by the Seaside, Out on the Tiles, The Crunge (Where's that confounded bridge?!) - all the kick-ass Zep tunes that everyone else just sort of overlooks? Dig into the songs a bit from the chord and melody aspect, also from the playing; in other words, how do Jimmy and John Paul work together to make it sound so interesting and effortless at the same time?
That would be cool, and if the success of Rick Beato's channel is any indication, there's an appetite for that sort of thing online.

I don't think you even mentioned Four Sticks, one of my favorites. The weird time signature...it almost didn't make it on the album because nobody could figure out how to count the damned thing in. Some later rockers who tried to recreate old classics said you have no idea what kind of power Plant was playing with until you try to sing this song. But most of all, I see it as a capstone of their long arc, marrying the driving sexual groove of their early classic, "Whole Lotta Love," with the ethereal chord progressions of their latter day epic, "Kashmir." Then there are the stories of Bonzo trying to up his game after seeing Ginger Baker play, of the attempts collapsing in frustration leading to them accidentally writing "Rock and Roll" in about 15 minutes, and the fact that it was so complicated and driving that they only ever played it live twice!

@@DimitriFantini I would certainly love to see one. On the one hand, I don't think it's very high on most people's list of favorite zeppelin songs, but on the other hand that means that more people would have something interesting to learn from the dive. Look into to it...see what you think

Definitely you can hear in the demo version his bass line is a bit more funky, but I think his tone and power were shown off more in the final version of Levee, the everything glues together is so powerful.

Idk which artists you mentioned in your video, but I read somewhere on YT, that Enigma's _Return To Innocence_ uses this sampled drum beat, just slowed down and played in reverse.

"When The Levee Breaks" was the inspiration for Montrose "Rock Candy". Montrose drummer Denny Carmassi was playing around with a drum beat that sounded alot like Levee . Ronnie Montrose heard it and played the Rock Candy guitar riff into a cassette recorder. He said if he didn't record it they wouldn't be able to remember it the next day. Without that cassette recorder, there wouldn't have been a Rock Candy on the first Montrose album. Thanks Bonzo, and thanks to Denny Carmassi. Now, count it off...1,2...

I think late 1968 thru 1971 was there best years imo. Especially the first 2 albums. Just so raw and badass. I mean cream and Hendrix was one of the first supergroups but every single bandmate in zeppelin is pros at what they did
