Thanks for taking your time to compare these two! I'm right now trying to find useful equipment, but try to save weight and size as well. In this case though, I rather sacrifice size and decide to go for comfort and functionality. I almost bought the wrong Therm-a-rest Ridgerest if you haven't pointed out that "Classic" lacks the aluminum coating, so I went for a "Solite". Thanks for saving me time and money!
Nice review, so thanks for that. Yes, the Thermarest Ridgerest with silver on one side is my sleep pad to go. Not very common in the UK, but luckily I found one. Easy to carry and light, simple with nothing to go wrong. I actually find them comfortable, preferring them to the self inflating kind of pad. Made in USA, not China, is also a bonus. For me, best closed cell mat out there.
I have the Ridgerest ... LOVE it!!! Backpacked with it a few times in the snow in approx teens temps and kept me toasty. Pour boiling water into a couple of your Sawyer filter bags and throw them in your sleeping bag and you're set. Made the mistake of cutting it down to size. BIG mistake. I got a Z-Lite to replace it but haven't tried it out yet. Hope it works as well as the Ridgerest.
Good points. My first choice would also be the Ridgerest. I've heard people complain the Z Lite becomes thinner in the shoulder and hip area even with moderate use {20 times in 1 year) while the Ridgerest showed no loss of cushion in 4 years.
Well, I liked your video, you went to the different points and helped me. I don’t care to see the “excitement” of unpacking of a product or how they build a fire just to give a review on a camping pan.
I have the Z-Lite and love it! I usually pair it with the torso length Multimat 25S self inflating mat but I have slept on the Z-Lite on its own and you do adjust to the comfort level. I’m a small female, child of the 60s so used to sitting on the ground, sleeping on a foam mat. Like your video by the way, thank you for sharing your thoughts 👍🏻🙂
Haha I just listened at 1.5 the speed... Dunno why people complain when that is an option... So long as there is no music in the background.. I actually forgot this is not the normal speed haah
Just to give my two cents. I really enjoyed a UA-cam video that isn't full of shouty fast-talking over-excited headache-inducing noise. This was easy listening and informative. Good job.

According to the specs, the Z Lite Sol (72" x 20" x 0.75") has an R-value of 2.5, weighs 14 oz. and runs $45. The RidgeRest SOLite (72" x 20" x 0.62") has an R-value of 2.8, weighs 14 oz. and runs $30. (REI prices). Specs on the Ozark Trail Camping pad are difficult to come by online. From what I can make out from the images I see, it's about 72" x 20" x 0.5", weighs about 12 oz. and costs about $7. No R-value.
For the first time ever I looked up sleeping pads and the first thing I noticed was how thin they are at 24". Getting into camping for first time at 52yo... I would guess that it's because they are part of a large number of hiking/camping essentials and the more compact the better.
You know they are more to add a tiny bit of comfort and so you do dont habe to sleep in the mud. So if you realize that your sleeping on the ground and suck it up its fine, it keeps you off the mud.
Yes thank you. I was wondering what the difference was. I personally will buy ultra light 290g, 150cm in length blow up pad from aliexpress for 30$. Then strap my z lite thermareat on top of it. This is what I've done already and it's super comfortable. Like a real matras. I now found an even lighter pad than my full length 480gram one. To me, this is the best setup. Perfect comfort, versatility, heat resistance, weight and price.
any ideas for the coating when it wears off? I bought mine 3 months ago for a cross Canada walk, and the coating is already wearing off... It definitely lead to a a warmed sleep. without my butt and sides were cold while sleeping on my mattress, with I was comfortable.
ASTM testing has now shown there is only a 0.1 difference in R value between the coated (2.1) ridgerest Vs the uncoated (2). I'm getting the ridgerest plus a aluminium coated picnic blanket that weighs less than 200g to add a bit of heat reflection. Been on old faithful blue for 20 years so should be a nice upgrade 😂
That sir, is an excellent description regarding conduction. I have made similar points regarding stasis and heat transfer, so perhaps that is why I think it's a very good description. Lol

Mark they’re quite tough and it would take a lot to tear them. I’ve yet to tear one. With that said it is a failure point that the Ridgerest simply doesn’t have.
As soon as he said it's not comfortable, I stopped the video. First of all, I'm not looking for a "camping" way to sleep. My situation is different. My girl Snores Really Really Loud, and it's impossible for me to sleep with her. So I sleep in the living room. The only problem with that, is the couch is just a tad too short for my height. (it wouldn't be so bad if the couch didn't have arms lol). So I usually sleep on the floor, the only problem there, is that it's a little too hard and uncomfortable. That being said, the last thing I need is a pad that's not comfortable!! I would just get an air mattress, but I have a feeling it would pop easily or get a hole easily, based on my experiences with them in the past.
Chris Sparks that is an interesting situation. I would in fact highly advise against using this as your primary mattress. To me it's really just for ruffing it in the wilderness.
how many of you have the blue Walmart pads, and would 2 be better ???(of corse they would)??? WHAT do you ALL think about *2 blue pads* ??? from Walmart ???
All of us used to use them. Yes 2 would be more comfortable, but not much warmer. I use the Thermarest now. The other guys on the channel use inflatable pads.
What's so terrible about it? Did I leave out product details? Did I fail to convincingly declare a winner? I just need some details as to how to improve future videos.
It seems like you are trying to emulate Nutnfancy's style, but it's bad. One easy improvement to your video would be to remove all of the breaks in your sentences. It takes forever for you to say anything, and it also makes listening to you very unpleasant, I get really impatient. You could either speak with a better flow or edit the breaks out. Without cutting any of the content, your video could easily be cut down to 8 minutes. The content was fine.
Bucks Bass and Backpacks lol. it's a bit esoteric man. we don't need life lessons or your philosophical take on heat transpher x . just go outside, use the pad for a night or a camping trip and tell us your experience.
Now that you mention it, I think you missed the product details of the blue pad, and most useful ones for the Z Lite pad. The latter is easily looked up, but people are going to have to search very hard to find an R-value on the cheap blue pad, if they find one at all.
