Good exercise tips thanks. My pinkie finger has been bent for 6 years after surgery (metal plate joining broken bone). I slacked off on rehab back then because i could bend the finger ok but it has always annoyed me. I just started playing guitar two months ago and am now determined to straighten that finger (I highly recommend considering playing guitar. Never have i used my lazy pinkie finger so much). With this new hobby I started seriously working on straightening my finger a couple of weeks ago and can already feel it loosening up with range of motion increasing. Plenty of work to do still but these exercise tips really confirm i'm on the right path . The pencil exercise is one i'll be adding to my daily rehab for sure.
Which pinky is it? Is it the one on the hand that holds down the strings or the plucking hand? Curious, because I have a guitar, haven't been playing. I have ROM issue with my badly sprained right pinky and I have a right handed guitar (and am right handed).
Love these! I'll definitely be adding them to my routine. My injury happened a year ago and I've been slacking on getting my finger back to normal. Thanks!
Same problem here, keeping after it. For me it's been 7 months. Sprain of pinky PIP joint, a boutonniere deformity. I'm almost 80, so I don't heal like a 14 year old! The pain's 90+% gone, the swelling too, but the ROM is tough to regain. I figure persistence and determination will pay off, but slacking won't!
@@DP-wo5ik Yeah, hasn't changed, limited ROM, working at it causes pain, so I back off, probably not persistent enough in dealing with it. Had phone appointment with hand surgeon and he said a cortisone shot would likely alleviate the trigger finger aspect of the pinky which happens when I go for more flexion than the joint wants. I had that shot 8 days ago and will start trying for more flexion in another week (doctor said to hold off for 2 weeks from getting the shot). Am scheduled to resume physical therapy at that point with a new-to-me therapist (a GOOD IDEA, I lacked trust in the last one, who was bumped up to supervision and no longer does therapy!). So, bottom line is not much pain now, but not good ROM, but the cortisone and PT is apt to help, maybe a lot. Flexion is more a concern than the extension, because grip is paramount. Straightness has little practical import. I'm probably lacking 25-30 degree for full (straight) extension of the PIP joint. I may not work on regaining extension. It's been 14 months since the injury occurred.
I fractured my little finger some weeks ago and only recently discovered it was broken. The bone is mending so I have just had my first physio session where I was taken through the first three exercises. But it was a lot to take in all at once and your video really helps. They recommended three lots of 10 second holds done four times a day. Now I know what I am doing I can try and avoid the knuckle joint trying to compensate and focus on building up those muscles that have got weak (due to lack of use) and help the tendon to slide a bit more freely and to tighten up again. Whilst the movement seems minimal at the moment I know (from rehabilitation of a past injury) that the range will improve if I work at the exercises.
Thanks alot.i injured my index finger but unfortunately the figure cannot bend after healing but after watching this video following your advice I can see some difference.its now one week since I started this therapy and my finger can bend a little now
I had a dramatic finger injury last December where I lost the top portion of my index finger in the inside of a door they amputated it right below the first knuckle so I have a bit of finger above my pip joint and then down I struggle with stiffness and it not going completely straight or completely bent. I didn't eat for a while and then kovid hit. I have just started doing your extension exercises and your stiffness exercises I think they will be very helpful for my situation and I still have sensitivity issues but it does not stop me from using the hand just everything does as you said feel like sandpaper
thank you so much for your videos. This June 2020, I broke both wrists and had pins in the left hand to hold another break inplace. Plates & screws + carpal tunnel surgery all done 10 days after my breaks. My left hand was super swollen and the little, ring and middle finger were wrapped up and not moving for about 6 weeks total time (2 additional weeks in cast on the right hand but fingers moved more. It is now 4 1/2 months and my left fingers (non broken) are still swollen a bit, and they are straight but the joints don't bend very well. MUCH better but I'm still working them and my index finger each day to get them moving. I did your buddy wrap but have not done it each day. should I? I sit and bend them down several times during the day. Will any of these help? I'm so frustrated with them still having mobility issues .. thank you for the help and encouragement!
Dealing with 1 is challenging enough but 2..ugh! These exercises are great for straightening the fingers so would not help bending them. Hey there! Thank you for this video! I have a question about finger stiffness; if someone kept their finger at a bend position for about 6 months straight, and it has gotten stiff and swollen around the knuckle area, is it possible to regain flexibility to straightening and bending all the way, by performing finger exercises for over a long period of time, without having surgery? Thanks!
I broke my wrist at the end of January and had surgery with a plate. I had my cast removed the end of March. I've been going to occupational therapist since February. I had swelling that would not go down on its own so the surgeon gave me a steroid shot in each knuckle in April and that has helped move therapy along. Now, my index and middle finger are having a hard time straightening and my palm has remained pretty stiff ever since my cast was removed. I was prescribed oral prednisone but I haven't taken it because I'm really hoping that I can get my fingers straight without it.

Hello Michelle, great channel I want to ask you a question about my fingers. I had trigger finger surgery on all four fingers on my right hand.3 weeks ago. With My pointing finger and middle finger I've discovered now that the pain that's in the two main knuckles may not be associated with trigger finger. The trigger finger is gone but the pain now seems to be worse if I put my hand flat on a table it's painful to make my hand completely flat there's a curvature because I cannot straighten my first two fingers out I also cannot make a fist. I'm really concerned the doctor says there might be some arthritis and if that's true it's really really bad…….. any suggestions? When I try to straighten my fingers or stretch them it's very painful and it really doesn't feel like stretching pain.
Hi I had an accident last year and broke my proximal bone right at the tip of the joint so my little finger was set with a wire and as the drs was pulling the wire out after healing of my finger the tip of the joint bone broke again so now the bone has healed on top of the proximal phalanx, I am unable to straighten my little finger now as I thought it was due to the break but instead it’s due to stiffness. The bone is still on top of the phalanx bone and have been advised by drs it should remain that way due to the complications due to not flexing at the joint. Will this video help with this as I need to be able to straighten if am to have corrective surgery
My fingertips of the forefinger, middle and ring finger( of both hands😖 ) have curve i am not sure how i got it maybe it was because of my finger cracking and twisting habit( which i have overcome) So i wanted to know that is there any way to get them straight again

@VirtualHandCare it's been a year since I broke my middle finger proximal phalanx. My middle joint in that finger is still swollen and will not completely straighten. Do I have any hope of getting it straight again?
I just took my splint off after 7 weeks for mallet finger .. My finger is slightly still bent and stiff it hurts when I try to bend it would these exercises work ?
How is going? Im in the same spot now as you were and just started doing physiotherapy
Hi mam good helpful
Michelle my belle..thanks
I am an aging pianist and my finger tips (first joints of the fingers) don’t straighten easily with early stage of arthritis. I really need that extension because of my small hands. Any tips to straighten the first joints?
Hi are all the excercises good for RA deformed fingers?
Hi I had an accident last year and broke my proximal bone right at the tip of the joint so my little finger was set with a wire and as the drs was pulling the wire out after healing of my finger the tip of the joint bone broke again so now the bone has healed on top of the proximal phalanx, I am unable to straighten my little finger now as I thought it was due to the break but instead it’s due to stiffness. The bone is still on top of the phalanx bone and have been advised by drs it should remain that way due to the complications due to not flexing at the joint. Will this video help with this as I need to be able to straighten if am to have corrective surgery
My fingertips of the forefinger, middle and ring finger( of both hands😖 ) have curve i am not sure how i got it maybe it was because of my finger cracking and twisting habit( which i have overcome)
So i wanted to know that is there any way to get them straight again
How many times a day should I do this exercise? And how long does-a splint should wear ? Does it need to do the exercise evryday? I hve so many question lol. I’m hoping I will get and answer back☺️Thank you
please help! very very helpfull! thanks.my doctor didnt give to me so information. i have 2 months from the accident.total broke tenond internal, catch to the clothes.i had splint for 6 weeks continue and after two weeks part of day and evening.its going well said doctor but i see yet not straight the first phalanx.ifeel to wear it more and i feel that even now maybe its going better to extent.i am very stressed and upset, for it..i want for it to work firstly normal and not leave problem .after 6 or 8 weeks has meaning to wear splint? how is the time that it can go improve more and more? i heard and 4 months.is it true? have i have to hope for improve in future or this picture will stay ? in any case is there limit to the time that we can do operation with success for better result? must be long cut to find tennod? thanks for your time
I’m planning to buy your strap but I need to know how long in a day should I wear this strap to my finger?
Amazing 👍
Is it normal for it to hurt? I broke my joint a year ago and I haven't been able to straighten it; I can definitely feel the ligaments stretching and warming up but WOW it kind of hurts lol
Hopefully these will work. Dislocated ring finger 4 weeks ago and I can't bend into a fist or fully straighten, which is frustrating as I'm a kickboxer and can't hit anything with my left hand now.
how is it now? i dislocated middle finger and also cant make a fiat and fully straighten so the finger goes high when the palm is on the table
@Markus still the same. Thinking about getting it checked out again!!!
@@alivekicking6247 my finger which cant bend fully to a fist is very swolen even though it only had a dip dislocation. is this also with yours? i think the big swelling prevents the full range of motion and swelling improves for up to 1 year.
@Markus wow! I am wondering if my finger is permanently disfigured now. October 11th was when it dislocated. I can now hit a punch bag with my left hand again, however. Albeit without full power
@@alivekicking6247 i think mine is disfigured because of the swelling only. when looking at xrays i didnt see anything strange. i will maybe also go to a real hand surgeon again. was only at a normal accident surgeon. Im German and in Germany. im not a boxer and can do everything except putting on shoes doesnt work so well yet. i dont need the boxing function but for self defense if that ever would be necessary but i want it anway look not deformed like now and working.
Can you do for thumb who is not extended?

I started noticing my symptoms for type 2 of mild camptodactyly on both my pinky fingers at 11 years of age but still haven't done any treatment yet, 5 years have passed since then and my joints have stiffen. Do you think this can be completely cured if I do exercise regularly?
good videos, i am trying for my son whose fingers are very weak , he is not able to put fingers on computer key board properly, putting with stiff and not able to put with ease( he is a special child.
My right hand little finger pip joint totally block and even dont do movement so what I can do please help and reply me
I'm a guitar player, 50 years old. I have a little bit of peripheral neuropathy from Type 2, but for 35 years I"ve had no fundamental issues playing. Now my ring finger is starting to collapse at the first knuckle. The ability to hold it straight/rigid is kind of critcal to playing. Will these exercises help? I type way too much at work, I know this combined with not playing as much as I used to is probably all factoring in. I keep looking for help on the internet, there seems to be (frustratingly) no specific description of my specific condition. I can't afford a specialist right now, my money's already tied up in a lot of other medical items. Just thought I'd ask, have a wonderful day.
Mam, can you help ma please, I'm in big problem
i have campodactyly, can i still do this exercise?
My son got hit with football on his middle finger tip and got mallet finger; it did not got corrected with splint for 2 months and then gone for surgery of mallet finger.
Mallet finger DIP joint started working after 6 months of surgery with physio. And next month his same middle finger PIP joint stopped working and finger is bent down to the palm, as per MRI it shows little rupture in central slip.
Then second surgery performed for PIP joint to repair central slip. After 8 months of surgery still finger not functioning and also have pain in PIP joint and finger looks like boutonniere deformity.
Please advise as my son is facing this all from last approx 2 years.
Can this exercise help after 6 months of stiffness
I had fractured my pip joint on my pinky and I’ve had my surgery Almost 2 months ago the bone is healed but is still really swollen and stiff whenever I try to do any exercise it hurts what should I do mam please help .
Warm the hand prior to doing the exercises!
I have a very short little finger than ring finger is it helpful for my finger also?
Saludos cordiales!
My orthopedist also gave me the passive strectch. I discovered if I do more than lets say 20-25 reps at one time my finger hurts for hours…. So, I guess I need to do 10 reps at max at one time??
Tanx so much for this video i am from pakistan
You are welcome!
Mam please reply me how much time it takes to cure hyperextension
Middle finger broken how many days in recover pls reply me
Hello ma'am I have got fracture on my right middle finger so what I have to do now?
Hi, I injured my thumb 6 weeks ago and I had an extensor tendon repair, it's been 6 weeks and today I'm allowed to take off the splint for exercise , I already knew that I was going to face stiffness but I didn't expect it to be so extreme, now I don't know if it's normal or my extensor tendon is stuck there, I can't bend the IP joint at all, say in a neutral position the angle I can make is probably -1° and it feels very very hard to get that -1°, is that normal?
Yes, 6 weeks of no movement will leave anyone stiff! Wonder why they didn't have you start protected motion earlier. You will definitely want to stay on top of your exercises and make sure you follow your therapist's recommendations to get moving. I do have other thumb exercise videos too- ua-cam.com/video/2zpHdL25Iuc/v-deo.html. Best of luck!
@@VirtualHandCare yeah I checked that video too and some exercises are the same they gave me, I think I can move it a little bit more, but is hard to tell, thank you for your answer!
How is your thumb now?
@@dnangel4277 not bad, still feels a little awkward after 1 year and 5 months, I didn't get full range of motion but I can't think of anything that I can't do now that I could before
Please help me. 😢 It's been 2 months since my operation for installing internal fixations for my ulna and radius fracture. I'm really a hard working and disciplined guy. I live in a remote area where there is no hand physiotherapist so I'm just doing my best through videos. But now, I still can't make my fingers extend even just a bit. My wrist still has a little bit of swelling but not that painful anymore. I can extend it but just a little bit. I also still can't fully close my fist. Now I'm feel scared that I might have some other problems after the operation. Please help me. 😢
Try warming your hands prior to doing these exercises!
I had stroke before 2 years. I can't able to open my fingers.could I use these exercises ?from India.suggest some exercises .please help me to get through it.
I wish I knew these exercises when I was younger. Is it too late for these exercises to straighten out my pinky fingers that I dislocated decades ago?
It is hard to say but it is always worth trying!
With the rubber band you should use your other hand rather than your thumb to avoid lateral/medial forces acting on the the finger tip.
Hey all the exercises didnt make my small finger straight what should i do
Can I straight my pinky finger
Hi! I crack knuckles that's why my fingers are crooked How so straight? plz tell will this trick work
Hi, I have both OA and RA. 5 weeks ago I had 3 trigger fingers released on my rt hand. My ring finger doesnt want to straighten completely on its own. I'm now discharged from Ortho. I no longer have activity restrictions. Would these exercises work for me? Also the therapist gave me an oval 8 splint. Would this splint help or hinder flexibility in that finger? Thank you for your help!
