When you fish in 30 ft of water, the pva foam used might not have the buoyancy to lift all the 30 ft of line from the bottom of the lake all the way to the surface, so instead you have a float 3 ft behind the hook, that does the heavy lifting. It also keeps the line tighter improving the bite detection and hooking. Hope this helps

A cork ball would be a good cheap alternative to a zig float. Seems a bit gimicky and ott.

The Zig Float Kit allows you to fish your suspended bait up in the water, with a shorter hooklink and at variable depths. Hope that help.
