Note: NO SAMPLE GUIDE IS TRULY PERFECT! There will inevitably be some tiny (or even major) mistakes in this video, but me and the F8 Criticism Group have tried to minimize the amount of mistakes in this video so that this can serve as a very accurate guide for others.

the way the static of El Capitán slowly grows in volume until the end is even more haunting seeing it visualized as a sample box growing brighter until the video cuts to black. love these sample guides

I'm seriously impressed. Not just with the guide, but also with the relatively short amount of time between J1 and this.
K1 is one of the tracks that, while I don't feel anything particularly strong about the track itself, I'm simply impressed by the amount of effort Kirby must have put into it. This sample guide shows why. There's simply so much going on, even in some of the relatively calm sections.

This is an incredible piece of work. How the community managed to figure some of these sounds out is beyond me. HUGE props to everyone who helped with this guide and the hundreds of dedicated individuals putting their efforts into deciphering the samples in this noise. Absolutely phenomenal job.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the changing of "Sections" to "Layers", the whole section thing to me is so confusing and boring, i've been trying to understant all of this since im also working on Post-Awarness stages and this whole "section a + b + c" is so stressing to me.
This is probably my favorite sample guide; almost everything was perfect, except from the fact you didn't put any layer review or opinion (if I understood by reading the comment it will be coming soon). It is amazing that it released so close to J1; and I think you and the people who worked for the animation did an amazing job.
I love the little precisions you make at the bottom right corner, my favorite one being the fact that after the first clarity, Layer 1 comes at a higher volume (which just makes the clarity even more impactful and it feels even more brutal). I hope you never remove them.
I don't have anything else to say about the guide itself, I think everything was very well put together and the animation is spot on, the glow on sample boxes where the sample has reverb, soft panning boxes, I think this was great.
Some opinions on layers (I might update this when you add your opinions):
Layer 1-2: A perfect opening to K1, very loud and chaotic, though some samples definitely stand out of the rest, like Black and White Rag which is very loud static (+ An extra layer which is slower yet makes it more interesting), and Ted Lewis's voice blips adding to another level of confusion and horror. Now the night is over... is very rare and fleeting, yet it does add a lot to the randomness.
Layer 3: Extra confusion on top of layer 1-2, Increasingly absorbed in his own World is not recongnizable at all because of the pitchmapping, and sort of darkens and confuses the track even more. It's all forgotten now is very loud and fast, not recognizable either and adding to the horror, and AEBBTW just adds to the static slightly but you can't hear any piano from it.
Layer 4-6: The most memorable clarities from Stage 5. The first clarity is one of the most brutal and horrifying moments of K1, as the clarity itself feels extremely sweet and calm, like everything stopped at once; but the way the chaos of K1 comes back brutally shortly after is a moment that broke many people. I also love how you can hear "Was it a dream" before the claritiy itself, most people did not realize that because of the sheer chaos of Layer 1-2, yet it makes the clarity even more magical and haunting. The second clarity is also very good, adding emphasis to Layer 5 (when I didn't even know you could hear layer 5 in the first clarity) ; it is just hauntingly calm all of the sudden, and "I'm Following You" feels less sweet and more bitter, like if that clarity was not as "confident" as the first one, yet it still exists and Layer 5 (making the first significant step closer to Stage 6's drones and heavenly sounds) drowns the clarity a bit, whereas "I'm Following You" still represents a form of awareness. It also feels as though you can still hear Layer 1-2's reverb extremely slightly in the background during the clarity, I'm not sure if it is just me.
Layer 7-9: In this section we have a huge number of samples at the same time, all referencing Stage 4 layers. Yet it's a lot more drony (because of the reverb and F8 - Mournful Camaraderie); it's basically the Stage 4 samples put together in a Stage 5 manner: with more drones and static. Now the night is over... is a lot more hearable and present, contributing to the static and wind-like sounds of the section; and Glimpses of Life Denial is very noticeable too, weird whistling in the middle of a void of wind, static and ashes. I also love Libet's Delay's appearances.
Layer 10: Here we have a future layer (of O1), and it not only adds to the idea of dementia being confused in time and place and non-linear, it also enhances the droning aspect of the section, transitioning into less violent static and noises, into more "soothing" and calm sounds. It still is chaotic enough to be in Stage 5, yet it does continue a slight transition into Stage 6.
Layer 11-12: This section feels like a sudden and brutal long windy noise, like if the door of the mind to confusion and post-awareness opened up to a storm of void and nothingness like we have in Stage 6. I love the AEBBTW and Reckless Night's appearances here.
Layer 13-15: This part is basically Layer 7-9 with more melody and less droning, it works as a transition to the end of K1 as a last form of real confusion. The static is not as present and it's more confused melodies that are not recognized (I guess you could recognize Quiet Internal Rebellions and My Heart will stop in Joy almost easily, but the other samples are a lot harder to recognize or were not heard before), I love Hell Sirens's appearances, and the way D1 - I still feel as though I am me sounds. This section feels a lot more like Stage 4 than anything that was heard before because it's more melodies and less drones and static; yet it still has a lot more samples than in Stage 4 and it is still very confused.
Layer 16: Here is the famous Grand Fantasia part of K1, I will be able to talk about every samples here as there are not a million, which is why this part is refreshing compared to the rest.
Grand Fantasia is a form of clarity in itself, as it is the least distorted sample so far in Stage 4, or at least it is almost not scrambled, and very clear. It is pitched down a lot, and sounds very grave, like the patient's condition.
An autumnal equinox is very audible and is weird: it is a form of confusion as it is pretty scrambled, but it is not complety unpleasant, as it sounds like a form of soothing drone at some points.
Prière à Notre-Dame was a sample I originally did not know was in this layer, and if I understand it is the origin of the crackles. It actually adds a lot to Grand Fantasia, making the sample sound more interesting and slightly more grave.
I still feel as though I am me is very well placed, as it sounds very much like it is part of Grand Fantasia, which is the reason why I did not recognize the sample the first times I listened to Stage 5. It also pretty much only plays at the beginning, making it a very odd sample.
Brown wax Home Recording adds to the confusion like it did in J1's Layer 1. It is not a very important sample in my opinion, but it just kind of makes Grand Fantasia less clear.
At Dawning is almost not audible, but does make the layer slightly more interesting.
Layer 17-18: This layer is brutal when you got used to Grand Fantasia's melody, yet it still is a sort of clarity, especially compared to what comes next. I love the voice at the beginning adding to a form of confusion, and El Capitán is not scrambled at all making it technically more clear than Grand Fantasia, yet it isn't because of the loud static.
Slightly Bewildered is almost not recognizeable even though it is almost not scrambled, A new kind of girl... is more static to the left, but doesn't really confuse the section that much; Piano medley of Layton & Johnstone Successes can be confused with Slightly Bewildered as it sounds pretty similar, and There's too many eyes... is pretty much just there, it does blend in with El Capitán just like I still feel as though I am me did with Grand Fantasia, but it still very forgettable.
This was far better than i could've ever hoped for
I like how at 7:21 and 16:49 the direction bar and name animates up/down for the loads of samples

At 7:09, a part of the beginning of Bimini Bay plays somewhat coherently. This one moment may be the reason why a lot of samplers found out it was actually Bimini Bay instead of Gypsy Moon.
My thoughts on the different sections in this very so chaotic track:
_Track or sample names will be mentioned in italics._
*Points that I will emphasize are signified with bold.*
(the reason why i’m doing sections too is that this track has a million layers on top of one, just see SB-D)
*Section A (Layers 1-6):*
*_Layer 1:_*
Right after you’re at complete peace and comfort with Layer 4 of _J1,_ you’re hit with a freaking bus of chaotic sounds and noises. _Black and White Rag_ is a constant, ear-piercing static noise that consistently rages on. _Homesick_ is a collection of distorted sounds and what is chirping. _Farewell Blues_ also sounds similar, but just full of uncanniness. _Bimini Bay_ is an awfully distorted melody that mainly plays through Section A (besides the clarities) _I’m Walking Around In a Dream_ is a very disturbing addition of vocals, with “and a rea-“ being heard 3 seconds in (00:03). -(why is just Ted singing so disturbing now)-
*_Layer 2:_*
This layer is directly just _Advanced Plaque Camaraderie_ from EAEB, but here. _Elusive Sunshine_ is a creepy horn that sounds extremely out of place and unsettling. _Black and White Rag_ maintains the harsh staticky noise, but with a clearer piano. _Now the Night is Over,_ unlike its normal vocal appearance, sounds now grim and staticky.
*_Layer 3:_*
This shares the exact samples of H1L2, but doesn’t pull from it. _Increasingly Absorbed in His Own World’s_ piano sounds exceedingly driven beyond what it truly is, sounding pretty dirty and audibly misshapen (that was just a weird synonym for distorted). _It’s All Forgotten Now_ sounds even more deformed, sounding outright *TERRIFYING* at 02:07. _An Empty Bliss Beyond this World_ is pretty hard to hear among the crowd of samples, but when you do hear it, it sounds pretty light, more clearly heard at 02:16. It still maintains the staticky, echoey feel that we’ve heard in H1 and mostly in J1, but with a light touch. I should also point out that this layer disappears at 03:40, a few seconds before the clarity comes.
*_Layer 4:_*
The clarity and peace. The Caretaker gets to breathe and relax in perfect memory. I like how this layer appears at 03:47, still during the recklessness, but heard. At 03:55, this part always sets me at a point close to breaking. It’s very sad to see that this is just temporary and makes my *heart break.* Some of the lyrics from _Was it a Dream?_ can capture this moment perfectly. *_I’m afraid I’ll wake and find, It was only in my mind._*
*_Layer 5:_*
Layer 5 is the peaceful organ named _Prière à Notre-Dame_ that plays over both clarities. It sounds very unwinding, as if it’d play at a church, perhaps The Caretaker’s wedding.
*_Layer 6:_*
This layer feels even more heartbreaking and underrated. I feel as though The Caretaker is trying harder to remember, and it works. Only not when it disappears.
*Section B (Layers 7-10):*
*_Layer 7:_*
Ignoring all the samples from past Stage 4 tracks, we reach this state of otherworldly oddness. If _Glimpses of Life Denial_ didn’t already sound unsettling, this cranks it to 11. The voices seem tortured, and now crying out from the depths of the void. _Now the Night is Over_ is just echoes of what once were, trying to capture memories that were long deformed. _Mournful Cameraderie’s_ drones are still here to comfort in this state of impending need. _Internal Bewildered World_ seems very ominous, yet very faint.
*_Layer 8:_*
This layer is just a cacophony of past Stage 4 samples, as some samples still feel as thought they were in Stage 4, with others sounding completely different with an opposite mood. This layer also kinda seems as a mass memory deletion, as some samples no longer appear more in future tracks.
*_Layer 9:_*
_Garden of Weeds_ feels shaky and horrifying, as if it’s also mimicking the echoes that _Glimpses of Life Denial_ or _Now the Night is Over_ made. _Reckless Night_ also has that feeling, except feeling petrifying.
*_Layer 10:_*
Just like how G1 uses J1L4, this uses O1L2. Both _An Empty Bliss Beyond this Worlds_ feel echoey, but rotting away. _All You Are Going To Want To Do Is Get Back There_ appears as a drone which feels deep and engulfing.
*Section C (Layers 11-12):*
*_Layer 11:_*
The droning of _Homesick_ and _DSFD (Part 3)_ feels stunning and soaring; capturing the essence of pure awe. _Best Ever Medley_ feels like Stage 4, more G1 or H1. Blips feeling like distorted vocals, although it’s just instrumental.
*_Layer 12:_*
_On the Edge of Breakdown_ feels thoroughly ominous, evoking something bad is happening. _A New Kind of Gal_ has blips entirely deformed, sounding like it got the treatment _Increasingly Absorbed in His Own World_ had in Layer 3.
*Section D (Layers 13-15):*
*_Layer 13:_*
_Paddlin’ Madelin’ Home_ sounds harshly unpleasant, giving off an awful atmosphere; although _In the Mission by the Sea_ sounds straight up unpleasant. _Bewildered in Other Eyes_ sounds like how it did in I1, although it sounds kind of more like _Ancient Court Whisperings._ _Internal Bewildered World_ sounds very deep and ominous, as if it’s trying to take over. _DSFD (Part 3)_ also has that feeling. _I Still Feel As Though I Am Me_ sounds just otherworldly, just as it will sound in Q1.
*_Layer 14:_*
_Accentuate the Positive’s_ drums are so unnerving, almost making me think it was _The Revolving Bandstand_ at first. _Ramona_ feels almost relaxing, if The Caretaker is just increasingly lost in his mind, he remembers something peaceful. _Was it Wrong?_ feels jazzy, but uncomfortable. It makes me feel some way that is wrong. It’s just the feeling of not being able to describe. _Quiet Internal Rebellions_ also gives me this feeling, but it also makes me imagine dwelling off in another universe. _There’s Too Many Eyes_ almost sounds like C3, except crumbled to millions of bits and pieces and destroyed with the ever-growing plaque, as if it’s in the process of being forgotten. _My Heart Will Stop in Joy’s_ grandness feels present, but crushed beyond oblivion, almost like _Fleeting Dreams_ in G1L5.
*_Layer 15:_*
_Unreleased Memory 3_ is the return of the very grim and hellish segment of H1, the _Hell Sirens._ It sounds just as unsettling and terrifying, but more broken and disfigured. _The Revolving Bandstand_ is still the ominous and unknown wood creaking sound, just slower. _Garden of Weeds_ still sounds like an unsettling, discomforting mess, but a little more scarier.
*Section E (Layer 16):*
What interrupts the dwelling juxtaposition of samples is this weirdly pleasant layer. _Grand Fantasia (Part 2)_ can feel pretty unsettling, yet also pleasant at the same time. _Prière à Notre-Dame,_ unlike its appearance in Layer 5, feels staticky and motionless. _An Autumnal Equinox_ feels just as calm, yet feels as it’s breaking down. _I Still Feel As Though I Am Me_ feels like an alternate, with its own way of melody and peace. _Brown Wax Home Recording of Piano Solo_ brings down the rotting despair that we all know (but don’t love). _At Dawning_ though, feels quiet and calming, just like the other samples.
*Section F (Layers 17-18):*
*_Layer 17:_*
In the peace of Layer 16, we enter an uncanny clarity. It all starts when a voice announces “This selection will be a mandolin solo by Mr. James Fitzgerald,” then it echoes into the abyss as a mandolin tune starts to play. (For some reason I adore the notes at 20:35), (And the static sounds increase around 21:34)
*_Layer 18:_*
What plays over this old mandolin melody are a collection of samples made to just sound off. _Slightly Bewildered_ was already a bad and broken memory, but hearing it here sounds so hopeless. It’s just awful seeing a memory so bad become even worse in this state. _There’s Too Many Eyes_ feels like prying into hell itself and hearing demons growl back. It just sounds absolutely broken, just like how it was in Layer 14. _A New Kind of Gal_ is like elevating up to somewhere unknown. _My Blue Heaven / My Ohio Home_ just feels like the other piano samples, disfigured and broken.
*And more and more I share my thoughts, I cannot doubt the unbelievable beauty of these guides. Thank you for all of the work to deliver these accurate guides for all of the trial and errors. I wish you and the F8 team all the luck for future guides.*
_Elusive Sunshine_ is not a violin, rather a horn.
As someone who can hear _Now the night is over_ in layer 2, it took me quite a while to be able to, mainly try to compare it with _Advanced Plaque Camaraderie_ , and look for a static that is much quieter than B&W Rag's, other than that, it is not really identifiable in what it's known for, it's voices.

@@thenullz0ne.I just found something (i think). NTNIOATDIATB (short for Now The Night Is Over And The Dawn Is About To Break) might be the weird hissing noise I hear in K1 Layer 2. Its sample box appears at the exact same time this hiss appears.
Few tips for M1 that I found: The droning from Mournful Camaraderie can be heard (isn't heard from far so might be false or true). Heartaches can also be heard.
If you’re talking about the first 8 minutes of M1, at 4:50 _Heartaches (Mournful Cameraderie)_ can be heard

the static in the beginning of K1 comes from black and white rag, the wistle comes from homesick (1:40), the most of the beginning melody comes from bimini bay and farewell blues, the vocals come from I'm walking around in a dream, the kind of humming sound in layer 3 comes from increasingly absorbed in his own world( that track name describes me sometimes), the kind of hose sound comes from it's all forgotten now, the sound that comes from a long tube-like metalic instrument usually in jazz comes from elusive(?) sunshine.

Hi! I'm not involved with the sample-finding community much, but after going down a few rabbit holes since I first listened to EATEOT back in 2022, I discovered a group of people dedicated to finding them all. I've seen a few sample guides and HOLY HELL it's way more complicated than I thought. Major props to you guys for finding all these when you're sometimes given a split second of audio. Anyway I'm really interested in following the journey and have a lot of questions, so is there a way I can get updates on what gets found and what samples are left to find? I see sample guides on YT and some are outdated without me knowing (for example I just found out Gypsy Moon wasn't the sample for the rickroll bit which sounds like it's been common knowledge for a year lol)

I find it fascinating that, despite there being 18 layers chaotically jumping around, you can still kind of break up K1 into 4 distinctive sections (I guess you could call them K1, K2, K3, and K4). K1, with the two clarities interrupting Layers 1 and 2, K2 starting with the interjection of all the Stage 4 stuff and following along with Layer 9, K3 starting with Layers 13-15 and the return of the Hell Sirens, and K4 being the Mandolin solo.

@@LoquatJuice_ Yeah, but I1 is just E7 for 20 minutes. Not saying I don't like it (on the contrary, it's probably my favourite Stage 4 track), but I imagine it's a boring track to do a sample guide for. Probably why F8's put it off.
Something tells me that L1 will be hell to make a sample guide on since it's the most active (Unless you consider that *one* part in M1). I wish you good luck on it.
Also layer 16 is the best part in K1. Fight me.
That one part of M1 should be the only real challenge after L1. I imagine stage 6 will be pretty easy, being the least active stage and all. In fact, I'm fairly sure Q1 is the least active track in the entirety of EATEOT (it only uses four different samples in the entire track). P1, though...

People seem to forget the hell that N1 brings, as of late duplicates of many samples have been found that play during the same time as each other, example being two F1s are playing at the same time. Don't even mention the shenanigans H1 is causing in there

You know how I1 and L1 messed up your task of doing them in alphabetical order? Well, you will have to choose which one to do first after K1. They're both equally complex, though, so it'd be a challenge to schedule them.

L1 is a literal nightmare to make with its millions of samples and tons of layers. Context Switch did make an L1 guide, but it’s unlisted.

Mandolin solo isn't scrambled and on its own layer, while layer 18 is scrambled and seperate.

@@barrianic4Mandolin solo layer and background scramble layer also appear separately in other places throughout the discography (the background scramble doesn’t directly reappear but an alternate of it appears on P1) which proves that they were produced separately

@@barrianic4 I didn’t think the fact that one was scrambled and one wasn’t was a definitive proof that they were separate layers. Grand Fantasia is (speculated to be) manually scrambled in layer 16 and it’s still the same layer as the scrambled inputs
