You can follow Ben Pellicani - ranked as a Golf Digest Best Young Teacher AND Best Teacher in the state of Tennesee - on Instagram at @pelligolf and check out his website www.pelligolf.com
I had a great time filming with Ben at the Westhaven Golf Club in Franklin, TN. In this video Ben and I discuss the two most common backswing problems we see - way too short and way too long. Ben also teaches me (us!) an awesome indoor and outdoor drill for getting to your ideal backswing length.

Smart man...I would work with Ben as well if I was in the area!
8:20 Swing Length Drill (Inside) 👍👍
Thanks for watching!
👍 thx Eric 😊
Eric - are you trying to get your hands or the club to touch the noodle? Wasnt clear, Thanks.
Club!
You want to TALK to us ! thats the problem your GOOD but too much talk take a leaf out of ausie pro golfer he talks while showing you what to do ,instead of 12 minutes talk then 3 minutes showing
Thanks for the feedback, Gordon! Agreed...I tend to talk too much!
Your tips and encouragement are top class that's why I watch all your vids but it's me I'm a watcher rather than a listener ha ha I learn more by watching your movements the picture sticks where the words go in one ear and out the other ,keep up the great work
@@CogornoGolf Completely disagree. The explanations are perfect.
All good!
LOVE these drills from Ben! I hope these can help some of you who struggle with the backswing length! Give it time and be consistent with you feedback and these WILL work!
Hey Eric, I'm becoming hooked on more and more of your videos. They're simple to understand, and are easily implemented in gameplay. One question if I may, can I do this with all clubs; particularly longer clubs like a driver?
For sure...but probably best to start and own this with a shorter iron...I believe I was using 8 iron here.
Awesome, as always; thanks for the immediate response.
These backswing videos couldnt of come at a better time for me personally
Exactly what im trying to work on with my coach and these drills are bang on for what hes trying to get me to do.
Brilliant
Thanks
I normally don't comment but I like this..Thanks
Our pleasure!
Curious which club length you should be doing this drill with to get it to transition well into all club lengths? Thanks Eric!
I would start with a short iron....Pw-8i
I really like this drill. One recommendation is to put a sock on the end of the club to keep from marking up the wall. It will allow you to practice in the house without your wife knowing:)
Lol love it!!
I love the drills as well. What club were you using for wall drill? Does the distance from wall change as club lengthens?
I was using a short iron (9i or 8i) that would be a good place to start!
Idk, Aphibarnrat weighs about 290, takes it 8 miles past parallel, and still flushes it every time
Haha...of course there are anomalies....did you hear the part where Ben talked about this and mentioned talent??? :)
For the wall drill, incorporate a smash bag so you have the aspect of the downswing with It as welll.
I like it
What a great drill!
First few times doing the wall drill - it was shocking to realize how much I was actually swaying to the right in my backswing.
In addition to providing a great way to sense the length of your backswing the drill also gave me an awareness of how much the lower body movement effects the position of the club at the top (p4).
One quick question ... At the top (p4) where should your left hip be in relation to the wall? Should it be roughy the same distance it was at address? Or maybe around a 1/2 an inch or so to the right? Thinking that a sway to the right of anything > a few inches would create some very bad opposite reactions in the downswing ...
Hope your doing well Eric!
Thanks, John! Appreciate it my friend!
The let hip will work OFF the wall (away) and IN a few inches to mirror the opposite of the right hip motion.
From face on like if you drew a straight line up the left ankle the left hip moving only a little....maybe up to an inch yup
Anyone else notice there club markings on the wall? He just practice this allot with students
Lol can't get good at it without practice....he actually practices what he preaches....AWESOME!
Maybe its better people put like a small bounty paper towel around the club so if it does hit the wall - no mark will be there.
Thanks a whole lot for this! I needed this! From a guy who had an overswing and is now struggling with a short backswing that doesn't even reach 45 degrees, this is a great relief. I tried the wall drill and instantly got feedback how far I should stretch. I was already making some progress, but this will certainly help me along.
Love it, Ferdinand! I have that same exact issue! Work in progress...but progress is all we are looking for!
This is pure gold! Gotta love cheap training aids that really do work!!!
Yessir!
Wow I have always over looked this.
Amazing video
Thanks, John! hope it helps!
Terrific idea to incorporate the waggle and look, makes it feel far more like the normal swing practice than a rigid drill
Agreed, Simon! I really liked that as well!!
Love these drills. I like you tend to get a little short with my back swing. I've been doing the sandwich drills for a week now it really does work people.
Love it, Brian!
Love the practicality of these drills.
Thanks, Tyler! Ben is great---hope these help!
Good stuff!
Thanks, Gregg!
Two examples ..
the length of the back swing, the "high hands" ala Jimmie Walker is proving passe ...
Jon Rahm
Tony Finau
and even Jason Day, and Steve Stricker are the examples of power with what looks like an abbreviated backswing, but is really an efficient backswing.
Doug Sanders took it back knee high and almost won the British Open (missed two footer)
The big back swing leads to disconnection, and late hands.
Thanks for your feedback! Of course there are always anomalies to anything....I believe we mentioned that several times in the video!
Simple but superb!!
Thanks!
Does that 1” to 2” away from the wall measurement get long with longer clubs like the Driver ?
For sure...start with short iron
Too long. Talk too much
Thanks for the feedback-sorry about that!
