EDIT: I am aware of the error in the end regarding Deneb, thank you. Please enjoy the rest of the production. A big Thanks to Gavin Ng for this Patreon pick, I know its been 4 years since the upload of the first Bravely Default. As much as I loved the first, it had flaws, and the same is true of the sequel ... I love it yet it fixed most of the problems of the first game while having some flaws of its own. Still recommend playing the series, and hope they continue the series off that ending stinger. Next RECAPitation is: (still working on Chrono Cross and a few other projects at the same time; thanks for your patience!)
Wait wait! At the end, Deneb goes all the way to the beginning of Bravely Default when she gives the hourglass to Tiz before he meets Agnes for the first time. That way the hourglass has the hopes and dreams of all the characters from both games, and why Agnes has the hourglass in the end: she took it from Tiz after he fell in the comma. XD
I replayed bravely default and caught of the time Deneb gave Tiz the hourglass... "You made it at last.." "Here... Keep this with you always." *Gives strange hourglass "This is hope you see, It's from those who cares about you." ..Just shows how far ahead have they planned. kuddos to the writer :) also, I have to ask. Bravely Sword is the third key. whereas i think the compass is the 2nd. what is the first then?
sadly no bravely third yet. but eh, maybe we get a hint at what exactly is going on soon enough since ringabel might very well have a cameo in default2 as the sword left the world, meaning it would make more sence for him to jump into random worlds than to not do it.
3.14 Dragon that's not True at all. FF9 had dedicated jobs for characters as well as FFX, and FF12 remastered has the Job boards for characters as well as FF11 and FF14. Most Ffs that can after actually had incorporated jobs in some form than not. My comment wasnt strictly talking about job system. But many things, story structure, character development and complexity, world setting, the mystical aspects and the magic. A lot of things that kind of feel more FF like than recent aspects. Jobs are just a very small aspect of that.
Well, if you count the FF games from the PS1 era, then yes, I agree. It's a cosmic and crazy anime plot with somewhat charismatic characters. Now if compared to FF2 to FF6 (FF1 had some time-travel shenanigans), I don't think Bravely Default is similar because these old school FF had more straight to the point plots, no crazy shit like multiverses, time travel, clones, etc.. you name it. Just a typical jrpg story of friends banding together and then kill God at the end. The Nomura influence on FF7 kinda sullied jrpgs imo, to tell a decent story you don't need to add cosmical gimmicks, it's just bloat and make everything needlessly confusing
I actually preferred this game's story to the original, partially because it lacks the whole replay/time travel thing that nearly derailed the original for me. I also found the characters in Second to be more interesting and the game to be superior overall, even though I still enjoyed Default.
Excellent recap and an excellent video overall! I did notice one little error towards the end of it, though. When Deneb went back in time to hand off the empty hourglass, she didn't give it to Yew's party prior to fighting Prominence, but rather to Tiz way back when he went to the Great Chasm in the events of the first game. The memories collected in the hourglass were therefore collected over the course of both titles. It also explains how you're able to use the Bravely Second command in the first game and how Yew is able to use it at the start of New Game+ despite that he had not received the hourglass from Magnolia yet (Agnes was carrying the one that Deneb had given them).
That's a fair point, always wondered how Yew was able to do that in NG+. Honestly, it took me several tries through the start of that before I realized I could use the Bravely Second command XD. Although, how did Agnés end up with that hourglass again, unless they used it for that purpose, then used the one Magnolia and co. brought back through time with them(?)
IMPORTANT CORRECTION Spoilers Deneb didn't go back before the battle with Providence, she went further into the past on your first encounter with her in the first game if you observed she had a green aura around her and the only time you see her like that is in the first game.
You're right, good catch. Well, good thing that detail is not THAT important to the overall story. Just like Deneb, I'm going to overextend how far I mean when she also said 'not too distant past' [2 years] :)
@@GibbyTheBeard It's also possibly hinted in the beasteary for the dragons that the old sage himself made them and not passed fighting ba'als but instead left for another world.
What I love about this series is that it has all the stuff and charm that I loved about pre FFVII of the FF series (I-VI) that the modern FFs failed to capture.
I never understood the hate those games had. The first game had nothing repetitive to me because they were revealing motives behind the bosses' behaviours and we discovered a lot more about backstory and how Airy might not exactly do what she pretended to mean to do. It had a great climax at the final battle against Ouroboros. I also loved Bravely Second and I must admit both game together were a masterpiece. My favourite character in the series so far has been Edea Lee. And not just because of her numerous Mrgrgr. She had an incredibly well put together character development.
39:37 this part there is a mistake. The adventurer went back to the time where Tiz return to seek for any survivor after the great chasm. You can see the adventurer is green color, which is the same in the 1st game.
You only missed one thing, the hourglass taken to the past was given to Tiz from the first game as he went to see the then destroyed norende but otherwise I lived this.
Wow. What a fourth-wall break, and just a little over halfway through the game. I love that. Could do without all the girls carrying a torch for the MC, though. :D Hmm, the courage to try again. Thanks very much for recapping and I'll see you on the next battlefield. :)
A bit late for this, but Yōko is the only one “carrying a torch for the MC” because of her connection with his family and to make Magnolia jealous; these games make their romantic pairings pretty obvious, so there are little to no shipping wars. These games are...interesting; Default has a strong 4 chapters of good character arcs and enjoyable combat, but the mid-to-late game suffers from treading familiar grounds with little-to-no change, with only Chapters 7 and 8 and the finale mixing things up. Second is pretty solid all the way through; a great ensemble of characters, both good and bad; combat that’s fun to play around with; and a good story overall. This game also subverts player expectations (to progress after the Kaiser and Anne succeed, you have to start New Game +; I don’t know many games that do that).
The sword of the brave is actually, the bravely sword : which in japanese sounds like bravely third. Too bad they never continued that route and decided to make BD2 which is totally unrelated.
My favorite gaming series next to Pokemon. While I think Second is better than Default, my issue with it is music. I did end up liking Ryo once I got the game but I missed Revo. Last year, my opinions toward Second's music really changed. I still like the ost but I've gotten super critical of Ryo. I need to play Second again and figure stuff out for myself while I explore what went wrong with it.
I love the Meta aspect is very much present here. Yew asking you to reset the game, Yew asking you to get rid of the fog, Yew asking you to not give up when you're almost at the end, to the goddamn title which they did in the first game, Bravely Default Flying Fairy or Where the Fairy Flies to Lying Airy or Airy Lies when the plot twist was revealed and in this one It's Bravely Second End Layer which is actually Send Player, Yew just takes the S and P. This game is so good with it's storytelling holy-
Quick correction. The hour glass was given to the tiz of the first game. Hence why agnes has the hourglass :3. It wouldnt make since for agnes to have it if it was before they fought providence :3
i thought when the adventurer went into the time portal she didnt go to the time before the fight with providence, but i think she went into the time of the first bravely default game, where tiz goes to the chasm for the first time and right before he meets agnes, since that explains where the adventurer got the hourglass from when she gave it to tiz and would explain why agnes has it
Purchased this back when it released and played maybe ten hours and stopped, loved the first one but names seemed corny and “ba’al busting”... idk. I always thought about what happened in the game and I’m so sad I didn’t finish it because watching this gave me the chance to see how great of a game it was and how they tied up the characters new and old in this. Really appreciate the Recap, this was great!
the hourglass goes back a bit more than just before providence it was handed to him before visiting the chasm after his village got destroyed by the pillar
A question: if everyone returned to their original world in the previous game, how are the asterisk bearers still alive in this game? Didn't most of them die? Kamiizumi, Einheria, etc. How did they all come back alive here?
Perhaps they are in the last world where they had the gauntlet battles in the eternia central command that would explain everyone being here except the retired or dead like quada, yulyana, and Lord derosso
I know it's been a year since this comment was made but I wanted to say it anyways: Some of the old Jobmasters give a hint towards their survival if you talk to them on the few occasions you can meet them outside of their sidequests, like Kamiizumii while he's recovering from having been attacked by his cat. He then tells that he owes his life to a man clad in green who tended his wounds after the battle with the Party in BD. So BS is set in the first world of BD and we can thank Deneb for the return of ost Jobmasters from BD.
One thing I loved about this game was you got to choose between some of the jobs ^^ you know our get em both eventually but it made that first time interesting, made me really consider the situations

I thought the entire game that the big twist with the title would be "friend slayer" and that Tiz was going to betray/kill someone. Maybe I read too many dark stories 😅
Everyone hangs off the Ba'als, but no one pays any attention to the Glans Empire. Seems to me someone's getting the shaft here. 'Taint like I have any room to talk, though.
I personally didn't find them interesting or accomplishing anything plot relevant to note :/ They were a comedy bit and that's fine, especially when they would use all the junky old Eternian tech.

I thought the entire game that the big twist with the title would be "friend slayer" and that Tiz was going to betray/kill someone. Maybe I read too many dark stories 😅

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Denys deserved better
Why didnt you mentioned sapp and piddler
I personally didn't find them interesting or accomplishing anything plot relevant to note :/ They were a comedy bit and that's fine, especially when they would use all the junky old Eternian tech.
Oni Black Mage atleast They had Fun battles
Currently playing the game and spend most of my time leveling... (I am here cuz I forgot what had happened till where I am right now since I lost the motivation to play this for a while)
Good stuff!
If anyone’s wondering, Anne is the sister of Airy shown in the first game. Just proves you can never trust a fairy
