Not a one single solitary bad song in their entire catalog ever, they were deserving of many number ones on the Billboard top 100 or 200, respectfully, period ❤🤘!!!
Ahh man this one was my go to for many years when i lived in the bottle and pounding drugs like a mad man(17 years sobar). So many many memories when i hear Skynard..Great edit and thanks for sharing🔥
Hi . My cousin Eugene Evans he worked for Delta airlines and he lived in Atlanta and he Attended that original show at the fox theater! He came down to Carolina where i live and brought that signed copy of Lynard Skynrd platniumn album. ❤❤thanks for this video ...takes me back
Trav Nugara, ~ I really appreciate the photographs you put in this video, as well as the song you put up in the audio portion, of course! I've always been a guitar guy and I especially love Ed's rhythms, as well as Alan & Gary's harmonizing leads. They blended very well. But that single coil, "Fendery" sound on Ed's rhythms are so cool!! But I'm not sure which of his guitars he used on this song, probably that black Stratocaster (I think) that he had kinda cobbled together. (I used to know but the memory fails many at my age!) His sound on this song has a lot to do with his amp also. Of course Allen & Gary used their Peavey's even in the studio, but Ed needed his Fender amp(s) and guitars to get a different sound from the other two guitars. He did play his '65 (or '64) Gibson SG on Freebird, for some reason. And of course, I loved Allen's Firebird (and later, his Korina Explorer) and Gary's '59 Les Paul - "Bernice". But both Gary and Ed wrote the chord progression and how to cross-pick those chords. And Ronnie's lyrics, melody, and soulful delivery is the most inspiring part of the song. The guys wouldn't have done ANYTHING without Ronnie doing his thing. And Allen did NOT help write this song, according to the album's credits. So, I am wondering - why are most of the photos of Allen? Is he your favorite? I must say, Freebird is one of the best and most important guitar songs in all Rock & Roll history. As well as how that song SENDS me into outer space, it truly broke ground and finally "set the guitar FREE", so to speak. Because, before Free Bird (or Freebird), radio stations wouldn't play long songs. But after that song broke big "in the real world" they were FORCED to play long songs AFTER that!! But not only is it long, but it has the greatest intensity of any other song I can think of, and that covers a lot of guitar ground. (I'm a picker, myself.) And that song is Allen's baby! Also, Gary's slide parts during the original part of the song before the finalé (the intro, verses, choruses, and interlude after the first chorus) were SO GOOD!!! I just had to learn how to play both those slides AND those great leads by Allen!! I did a pretty fair job. I raised more than a few roofs! (But I take no credit.) To me, it's up there with the best R&R songs in history. I used to say it was the best song ever, but now I have a couple more vying for that spot in my heart. So, why the high proportion of photography dedicated to Allen. I think the other members deserve equal credit. For me, Ed's hot rhythm guitar parts get me goin' too. But perhaps I'm different. One thing I really love to do on this song is to put headphones or ear buds on, crank it as much as I can take (all the way), and listen to that whole intro, especially the beginning of the lyrics at the end of the intro where they take it down. When the music breaks at the end of the intro (:50 - 1:00) the drums come in with a little reverb, and Ronnie comes in over those toms... it's very moving.
Ed king wrote this song on the first day of rehersals , when he switched from Bass to Guitar, just after the first album was recorded, I need you and Sweet home Alabama were written on the same day at hell house, im guessing it was his SHA Strat Sunburst , rock on, they also wrote MCA in the same week, these songs wouldnt be released until 1974,
I love the all the guitar chops in this song. I've tried to find other Skynyrd songs where there are this many chops, but I haven't. Anyway, it's such a nice effect.
There is not a live Version of the Original Band! but there is a Great Version by Gary and the Tribute Band!! here it is ua-cam.com/video/KQbBEncW1mk/v-deo.html
"much more than just a piece of LAY"....as in "she's a good lay"....common phrase in the 70s...not so much these days. Ronnie's way of saying it was about more than just sex etc. Even Al Kooper got this lyric wrong. :-) It makes zero lyrical sense with "leg"....unless Ronnie wanted some fried chicken...bwahahha. Keep in mind that Ronnie NEVER wrote lyrics down so everything you see online is someone's interpretation of what they're hearing him sing. Still arguments over lines from On The Hunt ( Every night when we leave the hall baby / Every night when we leave the Holiday Inn) and Workin' For MCA ($9,000...that's all we could win / just to sow to the wind -that's what Ed thought it was. ) According to Ed King... Ronnie did this vocal in one take at 2am...just Ronnie / Ed / engineer in the studio. Great stuff.
Al kooper was in fact Correct! its Leg!! (Piece of ass), piece of leg! --NOT a Piece of Lay!!! --you can clearly here him sing it, , there is only one Version! And Al talks about this very Lyric because it stood out , Al was there!!!, even the others there is no doubt , its "Hall" and "that's all we could win". Rock On!
@@travnugara4544.. I wouldn't go by what Johnny sings 🤣 have you ever heard that term... "piece of leg"? I sure haven't. Ronnie was also a stickler for hard rhymes... And what's the rhyming word from the prior line ? It's "way".... not "weg" 🤣It doesn't make lyrical sense. I agree it's "hall baby" for On The Hunt. I'll tell you what... Find me any online reference to "piece of leg" /sex and I'll admit defeat. Ed said on his FB page that AL was not there for this vocal... Just Ronnie, Ed and the engineer at 2am. Rest in Peace, Gary Rossington....Fly on, Brother. Fly Free
Rip Gary the band is all back together now hitting them HIGH notes
Such deep and meaningful songs ps. Allen Collins and Gary rossington two of the best southern rock guitarist of all time
Ed King owned this song.
Agreed, and you need not qualify that statement with "southern rock".
Yes, Gary was good but there would be no LS without Allen, he was actually the best ever, yesterday or today
Yes, without Gary or Ed or Steve they could not have made it but Allen was the actual backbone of the band imo
Rock is rock n roll man. Born and bred in the southern US. All rock is southern rock really. It’s just rock n roll
