- From studying the dusty surface of Mars, to plunging into the atmosphere of Venus, over the last 60 years, we've launched hundreds of probes into space on trajectories to visit each of the terrestrial planets. But for all the fascinating discoveries made on the way, humanity's journey towards the stars started out in a much darker place- a battlefront between the world's then two great competing superpowers. And in this first episode on my new series on probes, we will revisit this space race, and the major milestones on route to visiting each of the terrestrial planets.

those pictures from the surface of venus have always felt so special, its like something we werent meant to see hidden from sight

Never found a better space channel than this one. Great cadence, pace, lots of information without being dry, well produced visuals and editing. The Goldilocks of cosmos stuff.
Maybe not space but try the history of the universe it number one in book for science all in general

Sputnik was launched when I was 5 years old, a memory that is still vivid. Following the space-bound missions has brought a lot of joy throughout the years.

time for bed - on a hunch i decided to check whether a new video has been released or if tonight is yet another sleeping space playlist night. lo and behold, race to the terrestrial planets dropped. you hold the key to my heart, yours are the sole whispers capable of lulling each sense into a slumber and most satisfingly - yours are the stories my restless mind craves during the darkest hours.
This is a really great recap of the history of the space race. Fantastic job.

I love that the Soviets got a probe onto Venus's surface and gave us those pictures.
The USSR isn't remembered for a lot of good things, but that was definitely one of them.
Propaganda of the United States has managed to a kind of take on delete the good things about the USSR, but I am fortunate enough to live in times of the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia. I can tell you, the USSR was never as bad as it was pictured by the US propaganda. The propaganda was much worse than the communist propaganda.

We need more politicians passionate about furthering the frontier of humanity in the modern day like this. The mid 1900s were truly a magical time for space exploration. It has been more than half a century since, our technology has leapfrogged over what they had back then, yet due to budget cuts and lack of interest from the public, our space programs are a shadow of what they were. I hope we can rise above these inane worldly problems and set our sights on the final frontier once more.
