I bought a 55 reg Jazz new and used it primarily for a commute to work (20 minute drive) and shopping. I never use motorways. Garaged every night and a mileage under 40,000 it is still in good nick and a dream to drive. My previous car was my late father's Hyundai Pony, so the upgrade to power steering, air-conditioning, electric windows & mirrors, and a CD player (only a part functioning cassette player before!) was a revelation. I bought it with rear parking sensors too. The storage is great. I used it for my mum's wheelchair in the back, and now my music gear for shanty gigs all fits in the boot out of sight. Not being knowledgeable about cars, my workmates had secretly researched alternatives for me when my old Hyundai was reaching the end of its practical life. Their recommendation proved perfect.
It is a shame that this car was discontinued in the USA because people did not think it was big enough, even though it really was more than big enough for most people's needs. Bought a 2015 manual in late 2014, and love it. Carries up to five people, or lots of bulk with the seats down in several configurations. Rarely can it not transport what I need to move, and it gets great mileage, and is fun to drive as well.
By the looks of it that's a common thing in the US for the smaller cars not to sell well or be discontinued, like you say it's a shame as they're incredibly spacious for their size.

I had the same car & colour too! And my license plate started with WN as well😅Was driving it for 7 years with little to no issues and then it died due to a blown head gasket. And yesterday I sold it and had to watch it being towed away 😢 I‘m gonna miss this little fella badly.

after my 2013 punto evo took a hard hit on the bottom of the engine after lazy road repair’s around my area, i swapped it for a 54 plate Jazz 1.4 i-dsi with only 64k on the clock & some cash my way. i can honestly say the Jazz is better than the 2013 punto. its spacious, fairly quick for only 83bhp & comfortable to drive. it does have it’s minor issues which can be expected but it’s still a fun little car for what it is
It’s the 21.12.24 and I just bought this car two days ago. It has 235.000km on the mileage and the interior looks and feels absolutely brand new. I couldn’t believe how new and grippy the interior looked. It costs me 1.400€. Everything works, every button, every nob. I drove it 240km back home and was positively shocked when the boardcomputer said that it used only 5,4 Liter / 100 km. I mean that car has only 5 gears. This car is a multi-tool. I am planning to keep it as long as possible
I was fortunate to have had both the 1.4 (1.33) and the 1.5 both MT mk1s at home back in Brazil. The 1.5 (105hp vtec ) was soooo much more nimble than the 1.4 that took it to another level of pleasure to drive... the suspension is slightly stiffer on that one. I even took it to Interlagos race track once and it was (in my hands lol) as quick as my E36 325i MT back then. I've just bought an '09 mk2 jazz here in the UK but it sucks to drive here so I didn't really buy it for the joy but for the practicality and low ongoing costs.
@@JJonCarsroads are wider which allows a more relaxed drive. Quality varies a lot but was great on my state. Yes it is more fun to drive, speed limits are higher for most motorways. Drivers on the other hand are worse but I do enjoy quite a lot driving there.
The CVT version has higher gearing than the manual. On a flat road it's doing less than 3000rpm at 70mph. Approx 25mph per 1000 revs. Of course with a full load or going up a hill the revs will rise. It's important to change the cvt fluid regularly too.
I had the EXACT same model for 7 years but it died in October last year because of a blown head gasket. 😢 Been driving around in a Golf 4 since and I‘ve been missing my Jazz so badly that I bought a 2010 model yesterday. Gonna pick it up on Monday and I‘m so looking forward to driving this practical champion once again!
Can I open you a biggest secret I’ve ever discovered? Turn on your AC and never ever anymore touch that button again - it should be constantly ON. Dry air especially for the British weather makes it easier but GDII sucks on fog inside the car sometimes no matter what. Plus your AC clutch workability for those who knows it lol… I’m trying get the GDIII with I-VTEC want to see how different it is. Very nice review though! I just want to add JAZZ AND PRIUS are like a FERRARI and LAMBORGHINI in low end segment. I owned a lot of cars but those 2 are the best!!! God bless Japanese engineers!!!
In the UK because AC is not seen as so important, people don't tend to maintain it and on old cars it's no longer working. Unfortunately it wasn't working on this Jazz, and also it has a leak at the back at the top of the tailgate (common issue actually, I realise, so I could have mentioned it) so there was a lot of moisture in there. You're not wrong though!
Great review as always JJ. Described the positives of Honda reliability along with a comment about the corrosion issues to look out for. Maybe the air con should have been on to clear the misted drivers door window eh?
I love my mk2 jazz 2012z Reliability, economy and the ability to carry a full sized mountain bike with the front wheel removed in the back . It’s just brilliant .
The Jazz is a great car with immense practicality. I had a 2007 Sport ( thats been on a rivals channel!) It had the CVT box and was very smooth to drive, the fake changes were only if you used the paddles. The ride was firm on early cars i think it was improved for the 2004 model year.
Used to have one of these as my 1st car, it was a gorgeous midnight purple like colour and it was a Sport model so it had a body kit, but unfortunately rolled it one stormy night! I have its cooler impractical cousin the CRZ now but still love these little cars!
We, well my GF, has a 2005 one. Our most modern car! My tastes are much older cars but this a fun little car and certainly cheap to run. Biggest issue I always have driving it is the blind spot caused by the A pillar.
Amazing how modern a 20 year old car feels isn't it. The A Pillar blind spot is present in almost every modern car now, I do miss the visibility of older cars!
Sweet. I picked up a 2002 Toyota Corolla Verso but the jazz was also on my list. My mother in law haw a Citroen cactus diesel with as blue issues(second time) and now they quote her 1200 euros to fix it. We're going to try to get it fixed by the manufacturer since it's the second time and it only has 75k km on it. But I can't across a 2007 Honda jazz and thought it would be the perfect car for her. And like you said, it's so nice to be able to actually see your surroundings. That's not the case with the cactus as it feels very claustrophobic. Cheers!
Ah man, the problem with modern cars! and particularly diesels. It's crazy how much it can cost to repair these things. Nothing like that to worry about with the Jazz :)
Thanks :) Yes would be interesting to see what the highest mileage cars are. I've seen them with around 200,000 on. I think they can do more but people scrap them as they aren't worth a lot.
My wife has a mk2 Jazz and it is awesome. They are incredibly practical, economic and reliable cars. They are surprisingly fun to punt about and it being an iVTEC unit, if you wring it out there is a bit of performance there too. My only criticisms are it is noisy on a motorway; the engine spins at 3500 revs at 70mph. The interior plastics are brittle as well. But they are a car more than any other that displays Honda's genius as a company.
I have an '07 model with only 65k on the clock. Its probably the dullest car ive ever owned, but its also the most reliable. And the space in the back with all the seats down, is epic.
I own one and I can honestly say they are more roomy than some of these SUV's today, especially the rear seats. I don't think I can find another practical small car as the Jazz, I will keep mine forever lol
They sell a 1.5 litre here in Australia that gets like 6l per 100km in city driving. I've read a review saying the 1.3 was a bit gutless on hills in a full car but I think having the 1.5 in a manual would probably mostly fix that
Jazz was discontinued in my country, but honda gave us something even better, the City Hatchback. same "magic" ULTR seats but longer wheelbase and longer hood (no more cramped engine bay). i got one last week
I keep buying estates because I need to fit my greyhound in the back, but in reality one of these would probably be fine, and a lot easier to park. I have to pick you up on your point about diesels being taxed off the road. My 2016 diesel is £0 road tax, and ulez compliant (for now!)
However I will admit that the simplicity of a 1.4 petrol has a lot of appeal, higher road tax but less expensive stuff to go wrong, I'm currently having problems with the AdPoo system what a nightmare...
@@JJonCars the note is a lot nicer to sit in drive in it’s nicer to look at and it’s just as practical. Just get a note. They’re much more sophisticated and premium
@@MotorTorq_ZA Not sure if you're serious comparing a Honda to a Nissan. Note is just an unreliable cheaply built rebadged renault trash. Like every other nissan we get here in UK since early 2000s.
Why is it that at 1:54 the speedometer numbers and the writing on the radio are backward, is this a left-driving car filmed with the perspective of right is left and left is right? Weird?
Well spotted - I 'borrowed' a bit of footage to show what it's like from the inside perspective as I'd forgotten to get my own. It was left hand drive so I flipped the image to keep it a little more consistent.
Three days ago I bought a 2004 Jazz 1.4L SE Sport with 74000 miles on the clock for £2100. It going really well and smooth specially that it is automatic. No dashboard lights at all, but the brake parts needed a change (4x brake discs + pads + calipers) for £600. My only concern would be the timing chain as these Jazzes do not have a timing belt.
@@JC-hu1wd A year later update: I took the advice of one of the replies seriously. I changed the brake pads and brake discs (all of them 4X) around 9 months ago. Brake performance massively went up. I added 12,000 miles to the clock after doing two schools placements. I sold the car for £1950 [did around 86,000 miles] and the new family is happy with the car.
3 things that really bother me . Only electric windows up front . Non adjustable steering wheel (only up and down , not back ) And those trays underneath the dashboard are stupid (at least on the drivers side) . I often kick this low hanging tray with my leg when i shift , im 6'2 for reference. Otherwise i love my jazz . I installed a banging stereo and a middle armrest for 30 euro that fits exactly in the cupholders . While doing the stereo i bought some sound dampening material and sound proofed the doors , quite a bit less noise in the cabin now . Nice review !
@Proth-h7t because I like to drive with all windows down. And sometimes when the speeds get to fast , or it starts to rain I want to pull them up again , but they're not electric
1.4 is more power and torque and performance and still the same fuel economy as the 1.2 😂😂😂 Best car I’ve owned and I’ve been through 7 cars just a bit wary of the gearbox manual (autos aren’t good either, avoid autos) and the alternators do go on them also the brakes wear out quick
Saw many of these first gen jazz sold so cheaply like £1,500ish. One of my bicycles is even more expensive than that (around £2,600). I was tempted to buy but I’m afraid might be buying a money pit with endless repairs. But now im more motivated to buy those cheap ones. I don’t care about image or 0-60 or handling, etc. all i care about is reliability and cheap to maintain. Because I want to have spare money for other stuffs (for my other vices) rather than having a bmw or merc to impress people i hate.
If you get one that's been cared for then it won't be a money pit :) Cars don't get much better built than the good old Honda Jazz. And as you say, not a lot when a bicycle can cost more. Good for you for not caring about what other people think :)
I've got 1.2 litre 2010, very reliable. I do markets and car booths. Its got hitch and I tow rapido folding caravan in UK and Ireland. Got to keep eye on speed as its well capable of exceeding 70mph while towing. I've had it 3 years , its only needed brake pads, tyres. I do oil and filter change myself. Got mechanic to put on auxiliary belt at 120k miles as I think it was never done. Very reliable motor.
It is not 1.4 actually 1.3, I felt the engine needs a bit more power if have the CVT, the new Jazz after the GD1 is too wide for me as I live in the countryside. Rust is the biggest problem, should have spray rust protection under the car before purchasing the car.
As informative and entertaining as ever JJ but with only a cameo appearance from backseat JJ I do feel a bit short changed. We're considering one of these for my wife's next car so your pointers on what to look out for are really handy, many thanks.
Haha! Yes, he mumbled something about unions and being on strike, but I'll make sure he's back in the next one 😂 That's great timing then John, good luck with your search for a nice one!
It would depend what you want in a car really - the Jazz is more practical and cheaper to run. But the Accord is more luxurious and comfortable. As my one and only car I'd probably have the Accord, but as a second car I'd pick the Jazz.
Hmm, they are a bit more valuable aren't they. By the looks of it you might need to spend £2000 to get one that's OK. Cheap runabout automatics seem to be worth a fair bit more than manuals
Roomy enough to be used as a hearse, which is quite appropriate for the wizened folks usually inside, at the head of a line of traffic, pegged at 20 in a 30mph zone. I'm almost 66 myself but actually wanting to own one of these cars is a very short step away from wanting to develop brain cancer.
I think that it would do OK in snow, as it's light, has front wheel drive and has narrow tyres. But I'd recommend winter or all-season tyres if you plan to drive in the snow a lot.
@JJonCars thats honda reliability for you the owner who had it was a firefighter drove 500 miles a day it was his spare car so ended up selling it to us for £400 in February
Not only is is possible, I also dug out a partially melted coil pack from a rear well. Needed a round section veggie corer to scrape it all loose. Then a section of garden hose on the end of vacuum cleaner nozzle to suck it up. Helpful to have a lit mirror to see plus a T-handle plug tool.
@@volt8684 It's one thing to do it in your front garden, take your time and figure things out. I suspect the stealerships were doing the absolute minimum in the belief the cars were bombproof. There's some truth to that. Despite the melted exhaust coil AND oil in another, the car was running fine. I did this in Oct 2022 as I'd just bought the car and wanted to do a baseline service, new plugs etc. Haven't checked them since but recommend ppl at least check their coil packs for damage or oil and go from there.
Haha yes, our cars are still quite cheap over here compared to most places, though the prices are creeping up. I imagine with you being on a smaller island it is more expensive to buy cars as they have to be imported. But on the plus side, you probably don't have as much problems with rust thanks to a warmer climate 😄
I was thinking of the i-VTEC in cars like the Accord - they redline around 7k RPM. Wouldn't imagine there'd ever be a chance of a 9k redline in a Jazz 😂
Hey, you're a tree guy, isn't that what you want to hear? Tbh, I usually try not to go with all the cliches but on this occasion I definitely failed haha
Every time I think about a new car I'm reminded of how there isn't a single thing wrong with this car and the thought quickly leaves my mind!

Are the roads better, more fun, more empty in Brazil? A shame we didn't get the 1.5 here
@@JJonCarsroads are wider which allows a more relaxed drive.
That's good to know - probably a bit better on the motorway then :)
I had the EXACT same model for 7 years but it died in October last year because of a blown head gasket. 😢
Been driving around in a Golf 4 since and I‘ve been missing my Jazz so badly that I bought a 2010 model yesterday. Gonna pick it up on Monday and I‘m so looking forward to driving this practical champion once again!
RIP old Jazz. But the 2010 model will be nice I'm sure :)
Thanks!
AC was broken, unfortunately 😄
Brilliant review with tact and honesty.Thank you! Blees!
Thank you, that's very kind!
You should leave the AC on to stop the windows fogging up. It should be used all the time at all temperatures and will act as a dehumidifier.
Thanks Willis. I should have mentioned the aircon wasn't working 😄
I love my mk2 jazz 2012z Reliability, economy and the ability to carry a full sized mountain bike with the front wheel removed in the back . It’s just brilliant .
I wish I could fit a mountain bike in my car 😄
The Jazz is a great car with immense practicality. I had a 2007 Sport ( thats been on a rivals channel!) It had the CVT box and was very smooth to drive, the fake changes were only if you used the paddles. The ride was firm on early cars i think it was improved for the 2004 model year.
Yes great cars! And haha, no rivals only potential friends and collaborators 😄
Used to have one of these as my 1st car, it was a gorgeous midnight purple like colour and it was a Sport model so it had a body kit, but unfortunately rolled it one stormy night! I have its cooler impractical cousin the CRZ now but still love these little cars!
A shame, but sounds like it protected you in the roll over. The CR-Z is a favourite of mine :)
Good job getting the scandinavian detail of the name. Solid car. Would love to know how many miles people have done
Interesting that the Mk2 has the same downsides as this one!
@@JJonCars Apart from the ride quality which is decent on the mk2.
I have an '07 model with only 65k on the clock. Its probably the dullest car ive ever owned, but its also the most reliable. And the space in the back with all the seats down, is epic.
Perfect for sunset watching
Nice review. But you left out one feature not found in other cars, that is the swimming pool in the boot that comes as standard on all models.
Thanks. And true - the steaming up on this car was related to water leaks 😄
I own one and I can honestly say they are more roomy than some of these SUV's today, especially the rear seats. I don't think I can find another practical small car as the Jazz, I will keep mine forever lol
100% they're far superior in practicality than any SUV of their size. If you can keep any potential corrosion at bay, it should last forever :)
They sell a 1.5 litre here in Australia that gets like 6l per 100km in city driving. I've read a review saying the 1.3 was a bit gutless on hills in a full car but I think having the 1.5 in a manual would probably mostly fix that
Yeah, 1.5 should be pretty pokey I think!
Jazz was discontinued in my country, but honda gave us something even better, the City Hatchback. same "magic" ULTR seats but longer wheelbase and longer hood (no more cramped engine bay). i got one last week
Nice, didn't know about that. Congrats on the new car
Yes I think it would be fine!
Tax was probably the wrong word to use :) The older diesels are still very cheap or free to tax it's true
It is also called Jazz in Australia and we had 1.3ltr and 1.5ltr (VTEC) engine options
Nice, 1.5 probably goes quite well
My dad had one of these. It was as dull as dishwater but it did the job. He sold it for a Nissan note
How does the Note compare?
@@JJonCars the note is a lot nicer to sit in drive in it’s nicer to look at and it’s just as practical. Just get a note. They’re much more sophisticated and premium
@@MotorTorq_ZA Not sure if you're serious comparing a Honda to a Nissan. Note is just an unreliable cheaply built rebadged renault trash. Like every other nissan we get here in UK since early 2000s.
The jazz was the original and the note, etc came years afterwards after seeing hondas clever packaging
@@insufferableoaf6060 yes but the note is more comfortable
Nice informative video.
Guessing by the condensation on the windows the AC is not working. 😁
Thank you, and yes exactly that! I think it also has a common issue with the Jazz that there is a water leak somewhere 😄
Great review!
Thanks!
Nice review yet you did not mention this car is prone to water leakage in the passenger footwell and spare tire boot
Yes, you're right - would have been good to mention. I think this car had a water leak issue too - from the top of the tailgate
I think you should be ok with the timing chain, I've not heard many bad stories about them, especially at that mileage. Enjoy the car :)
belts break and need replacement… chains go forever!
Mine did get faulty. Get it done as soon as you hear noise from the chain
How is your car a year later?
@@JC-hu1wd
A year later update:
I took the advice of one of the replies seriously.
Non adjustable steering wheel (only up and down , not back )
And those trays underneath the dashboard are stupid (at least on the drivers side) .
Surprising how the steering wheel doesn't adjust outwards given how practical the rest of the car is! Cheers :)
Can you send me info on the arm rest please? Mine is 2007 jazz sport.
@Proth-h7t because I like to drive with all windows down. And sometimes when the speeds get to fast , or it starts to rain I want to pull them up again , but they're not electric
@Proth-h7t never said it's not worth buying because of these issues . They just bother me, and maby potential buyers aswell
1.4 is more power and torque and performance and still the same fuel economy as the 1.2 😂😂😂
Best car I’ve owned and I’ve been through 7 cars just a bit wary of the gearbox manual (autos aren’t good either, avoid autos) and the alternators do go on them also the brakes wear out quick
Nice review x
Thanks!
Open the air circulation, the outside is closed, that's why your windows are fogging up
I own 1st gen Jazz for 10 years, drove it like I stole it. Never had an issue with it.
Top Engineered Car ❤HONDA JAZZ/FIT .I got 2012 Model..
My dad has one of these and he is using it since 2003 its got 600 000km on it and never broke 😂😂
Amazing!
I wish i’d find one for £1500 but if you check the market a decent one is above £2000 from 2009, like well above £2000
Used car prices have gone up a bit recently. Though a 2009 model will be the newer version and certainly a chunk of cash more!
Terrific! Honda Fit
Considering getting one of these at the weekend, it's between this and an Accord of a similar age - what would you go for?
It would depend what you want in a car really - the Jazz is more practical and cheaper to run. But the Accord is more luxurious and comfortable. As my one and only car I'd probably have the Accord, but as a second car I'd pick the Jazz.
Are they still going to continue with these if even Focus gets cancelled besides Fiesta. Are Civic and Jazz next?
I hope they do continue...
Interesting video again from JJ
Cheers Tony :)
ik you said 1000 quid for the jazz, but how much would you say is the cheapest youd go for an automatic jazz?
Hmm, they are a bit more valuable aren't they. By the looks of it you might need to spend £2000 to get one that's OK. Cheap runabout automatics seem to be worth a fair bit more than manuals
Views are climbing up, well done mate
Cheers dude! :)
Very similar to my 2002 Civic.
Hahaha, I shouldn't have laughed at that 😂
Had the exact same one as a courtesy vehicle once. Pretty good actually but not as nice to drive as fiesta.
They surprise you don't they
Ive been riding my honda jazz for 5 months and just now I discovered that u can fold them
Seats all the way down 😅
Haha! Congratulations, you now own a van :)
Cruise control??
I'm not sure if they got cruise or not. This top spec (although early 2002) car doesn't have it.
@@JJonCars on the MK2 Jazz cruise control was only available on the top spec model so not surprising
My 2008 Base model FIT does not have cruise control, but you can buy an aftermarket cruise control kit for $315.
What kind of fuel need jazz? Regular or premium?
2006
Regular is fine!
Can it drive in snow ❄️?
I think that it would do OK in snow, as it's light, has front wheel drive and has narrow tyres. But I'd recommend winter or all-season tyres if you plan to drive in the snow a lot.
Yep. I put snow tires on my FIT in North Dakota, U.S.A. and it handles up to 4 inches of snow just fine.
I saw one with 160k on the clock i got put of
Great to hear :)
Never driven one but brilliant little cars
popular for teens and young adults in my country but it's popular for pensioners in UK. what a weird state
My brother has one 230000 miles still pulls like a train
That's huge mileage for a little car :)
@JJonCars thats honda reliability for you the owner who had it was a firefighter drove 500 miles a day it was his spare car so ended up selling it to us for £400 in February
How much this car
In the U.S.A. they are $3000-$6000
Don’t get 8 plug model. Dis I think. Cant get 4 of plugs out
Yeah that's the downside of those engines. More expense for the extra plugs too
Not only is is possible, I also dug out a partially melted coil pack from a rear well. Needed a round section veggie corer to scrape it all loose. Then a section of garden hose on the end of vacuum cleaner nozzle to suck it up.
Helpful to have a lit mirror to see plus a T-handle plug tool.
@@speckledjim5150well get a job at a dealer because they don’t bother and is acretinous design

Haven't checked them since but recommend ppl at least check their coil packs for damage or oil and go from there.
take the cvt ,it brings rpm and noise down..
I want to try one :)
Think personally the jazz is not my cup of tea ! No power no room !! Civic is the go
Yep that's fair enough. Though the Jazz does have a lot of space for its size!
Interesting fact, if you’re stuck behind a car it’s always a Honda jazz
This is an interesting and true fact, thanks Calvin 👍
vauxhalls slow my jazz down..
1500gbp for that? WOW! here in fking Cyprus they cost +3500 EUROS!
Haha yes, our cars are still quite cheap over here compared to most places, though the prices are creeping up. I imagine with you being on a smaller island it is more expensive to buy cars as they have to be imported. But on the plus side, you probably don't have as much problems with rust thanks to a warmer climate 😄
That's not an se sport. It's an se.

7000rpm VTEC redline? I think you mean 9000😂
