- ABBA’s 50th anniversary of "Waterloo" came and went, but for some reason, one of the most intriguing news - concerning ABBA’s actual music - was almost completely ignored: ABBA’s entire catalogue, all of their original studio albums, are going to be newly mixed and released in the new Dolby Atmos surround sound. ol! i had an old broken turntable but was eager to get on Xmas holidays to my aunt's house to reach her ;new' DUAL Quadrophonic system back in the late late '70s.

Twas there where i first time listened my newly bought 'Super Trouper" album,'The winner../Elaine 7' inch plus the 'Gracias por la musica" album that my father had brought to me after a journey in Madrid.That vynil was labeled in SEPTIMA records.Twas Xmas 1980!and I was a lil kid on the 7th heaven!

I have always waited and hoped for a 5.1 audio version of all their albums. I became a fan in 2001. At that time my parents' house already had music on 45 rpm vinyl from the seventies, but there was a spark that sparked my love for ABBA, it was an ABBA GOLD cassette, which An uncle of mine lent it to my older brother where all my love for the ABBA group began.

That's great news. The Visitors will sound terrific. I hope they include a Dolby Atmos Mix of The Day Before You Came. For your information: Fleetwood Mac released their albums Fleetwood Mac (1976), Rumours (1977), Tusk (1979), Mirage (1982) and Tango In The Night (1987) in a Dolby Atmos Mix two years ago and were the first pop group to do so.

Tango in the night is amazing in atmos, esp seven wonders. However those are just 5 of fleetwood mac’s albums. We dont have behind the mask (1990) or say you will (2003). I havent even mentioned the numerous albums before / after / without christine mcvie (rip), stevie nicks and lindsey buckingham.
So it seems all 9 abba albums will be in atmos! I wonder about the bonus tracks not obviously on reissues. For instance, fleetwood mac’s ‘silver springs’ (one of their best, but missed the rumours album) isnt on atmos at all!
ABBA and Dolby Atmos were made for each other! Glad to hear (literally) that their catalogue will be issued in this format!
P.S. Not just saying this. The Waterloo Castle Location video is awesome, definitely one of BB best videos! The castle, the scenery and the story ROCKS!

This is very significant news for ABBA. Dolby Atmos promises to revitalise ABBA's original recordings in a way that no stereo remastering can do. There are only 2 problems: having the kit to listen to it, and the greedy platforms' penchant for streaming only. Thanks, BB!

Thanks BB. Actually I've never got to listen to those Dolby Atmos mixes of the voyage album apart from bits of it you included in some of your videos here. And I loved it as I got to hear some of the hidden layers of harmonies and musical parts. So, How can I listen to the Voyage album's Dolby Atmos versions?
I listen to music in Atmos through an Apple TV device connected to my surround sound receiver and multiple speakers throughout the room. I vastly prefer Apple’s implementation, but Atmos is available through other devices and streaming services as well. Lesser equipment setups can also work to get the Atmos effect, but actual speakers around the room is by far and away the best. Second best is the binaural representation you get through headphones if it’s properly set up. Tip: once you’re certain you’re listening to an Atmos version of the music, close your eyes while listening through headphones and you’ll have a much easier time imagining the sounds coming from around you. Other solutions like TV soundbars, laptops, tablets, cell phones that claim to have Atmos are better than nothing, but deliver a tiny fraction of the intended experience.
I was so excited to hear that the Library of Congress in the US added 25 songs that inspired Americans through the years, one being Dancing Queen by ABBA! Yes they did influence us no matter what others say.

The Waterloo 50th Anniversary EP on Apple Music Australia 🇦🇺 features the English version in Dolby Atmos, however the other 3 language versions are in Lossless stereo format only. The description of the EP format says “Lossless” and it is only when you play the English language version that the Dolby Atmos description appears. I hope this assists clearing up any confusion about how to find the Dolby Atmos version. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

Do you know if they're going to use the original source tapes or just the final masters?
Because IIRC, last time ABBA went into their archives they gave us Undeleted.
That's my concern as well, I really hope they will be sourcing the tracks directly from the tapes. If all they're going to do it's to extract stems from the stereo masters using isolation/filtering plug ins, then this project wouldn't make much sense in my opinion.

Thank you Bobby, typical of Abba to be the frontrunners, if I'm not mistaken "The Visitors"was the first commercial CD, I look forward to hearing the music in this new format. Got to see yoyr special on the Waterloo Castle before it disappeared.
Voyage sounds even better on Dolby Atmos than on CD, but I wonder if it is viable for the whole catalog, the only way I know that you can listen to it it’s on Apple Music with AirPods or with a Sonos set up.
So now Universal will have a new reason to make fans re-purchase all the albums all over again.
Queen has milked fans dry in a similar fashion.
No sorry, I would rather have it as was intended, good old standard stereo.

Go listen to Abbey Road or Dark Side of the Moon in Atmos on a properly set up Atmos system then come back to retract your skeptical remarks :) When done right, it can be a revelation. I trust ABBA won’t be signing off on some half-assed representation of their music. If it has their approval, you can still be a 2-channel curmudgeon or monaural purist, but you can’t claim that it wasn’t “intended”.

Dear BB. Thanks for the video and all the Waterloo efforts as well! I honestly wish Bernard to be successful with the D.A. conversion of this highly regarded material. Unfortunatly not many great artists back catalogue sounds good in D.A. There are a few exceptions like Elton and some Beatles albums. Lets hope my worries are unfounded....

Great news, but I do hope the Dolby Atmos Mix will also be made available on blu ray, besides streaming. Not of all of the fans prefer streaming and I expect that psychical releases will do fine, even though the current market is not what it used to be. Anyway, great video (as always) and yes, the Waterloo video did not pop up. The new one did ~Marjet

I also wonder if there will be a selection of key bonus tracks for each respective album.
i'm kind of floored that its taken 50 odd years or so ..to arrive at this point of finally releasing the studio quality sound the average public never got to hear much of
after all..this shouldve all begun to happen back in the 90's..when 5.1 dvd movie sound was already the norm

This Atmos mix is a lot of fun. I was afraid that they’d be too conservative with it, given ABBA’s status, but they did a great job. Lots of keyboards over your shoulder and stuff on the ceiling. I heard a backing line from the guys that I hadn’t heard before. This makes me really excited for the rest of the catalog.

As long as these albums and all Dolby Atmos are going to be on physical media as well as streaming. The amount of data needed for Dolby Atmos is going to be a lot and streaming instantly isn't going to be reliable enough.
A download would be better because you have to wait for a download to complete and it won't complete until it's got every single detail of the original master it's coming from. Ideally most Dolby Atmos music so far has been released on a Blu-ray disc. I hope each Blu-ray disc also has the same bonus tracks as before in Dolby Atmos as well as the music videos to the songs from that particular album dubbed with the Dolby Atmos sound. You only hear the single version on the videos anyway. The band Def Leppard have just released their album Pyromania from 1983 in a box set which includes CDs of stereo music and a Blu-ray of that album (but not the bonus material on the CD) in Dolby Atmos. It also contains the album in other 5.1 Surround Sound formats and even a brand new Stereo Mix. It's really too much. I'd rather just have the CDs with the bonus material and exactly the same on the Blu-ray in Dolby Atmos. Maybe there's no multi-tracks for the bonus material but that's the only decent excuse. I imagine everything that ABBA have done (including non-album B-sides and songs genuinely not used all still survive on there multi-track tape, which also means they could also re-scan all their music videos that were done on film and scan them at 2K or 4K. Even dithered down to 1920x1080 HD would improve them so much. I hope they still have the original film or at least 2nd generation copies of the film. The project won't be completed until all this is done. I don't believe in doing things by halves as you can probably tell. It may cost Universal Music a lot of money but I think it would pay itself back and people would snap up these releases, especially on Blu-ray. A SL Blu-ray R with 20GB may do or a DL Blu-ray R with 50GB might be needed to fit everything on one disc.
A download of everything on the Blu-ray editions would be OK by putting it on a memory stick and putting it into your sound system or your TV itself with the same menus as the Blu-ray would be fine, but streaming this amount of signal on demand at once? I'll pass on that. I don't believe in streaming music anyway and this new format is going to make it even more difficult to stream, even more so if there's video content in HD as well. I wouldn't subscribe to a streaming version just for that. Your internet connection isn't always exactly the same speed so could slow down and make the sound buffer if it gets too slow. It can depend on a lot of things including how many other people living near you are also using the internet or streaming something as well. Also, it could affect other electrical equipment in your house/flat that rely on a decent connection, such as Netflix on another TV or other similar streaming services.
Hi BB, this is the news i have been waiting for although i must say i am both nervous and excited at the same time. I upgraded my speakers to Atmos capable a few weeks ago and all i can say is WOW, when the mix is right it is incredible but there are a lot of Atmos mixes out there which are not so great. I was so excited to listen to Voyage in Atmos for the first time but at the end i felt a little disappointed. For example i think I still have faith in you starts out beautifully but further in you lose the main vocal and Benny and Bjorn's backing vocal comes to the front and the song sounds very different. This happens on other tracks as well and this seems to be a common problem with other artists too. The best tracks for me are Little things and I can be that woman, where Agnetha's voice sounds so beautiful. I am worried that we will loose the main vocals into the background on many tracks rather than enhance them. On a more positive note i cannot wait to hear what they do with Eagle, The Visitors, The Day before you came, Lay all your love on me and also tracks like Cassandra, I am the city & Should i laugh or Cry it could be amazing!!

I hope it’s going to be better than the recently released Waterloo Dolby Atmos. I don’t know whether it was my device or something else, but there were just something off about the vocals. Anybody experienced the same thing? ☹️
When you say device, were you trying to listen to it on a phone?
I ask simply because nearly all surround sound formats sound terrible coming out of a tiny phone speaker.
To enjoy Atmos you really need a minimum of a 5.1.2 setup, and to really get sucked into the sound a 7.1.4 system would be preferred.
While I do agree that a full X.x.X system is essential for proper Atmos listening, headphones can provide an excellent binaural representation of the full Atmos mix. Even then you’ve got to close your eyes to suspend disbelief, and start to hear the sounds around you. It’s all too easy to dismiss the surround experience while your eyes are telling you there’s nothing there.
On wich Streaming Plattforms can I for example hear Voyage Songs in Dolby Atmos? I have Only Spotify On My iPhone…
Apple Music is available on both IPhone and Android and from my perspective I think the songs sound better and fuller if that makes any sense. There’s also Tidal and Amazon Prime, Deezer. The Beatles Red and Blue albums have been remastered in Atmos and sound incredible on there.
Will there be a new song for the Eurovision ?? I hope so. There is information of 2 unreleased songs from Voyage

Can anyone tell me why the mixing on the Voyage album sounds less produced and clumsy on platorms like Spotify, yet older albums sound amazing?
Not sure if it's the exact reason, but it could be the absence of Abba's original Sound Engineer, Michael Tretow, who worked on all their previous albums.
I’m stoked to hear it’s all being released in Dolby Atmos. To my ear, everything since the Polydor releases sounds either louder, or compressed. Let’s hope this is a leap forward.
This could be a revelation, as some of those fantastic early songs such as "Dance While The Music Still Goes On" & "Honey Honey" had questionable production.
BTW has anyone noticed or is it my dumb ears...That .In their ESC 1974 Brighton performance i hear 3 times an encouraging exclamation voice possibly by Bjorn.Twice in the intro kinda" hej!",'YaH" and somewhere before the final chorus smth like 'aand" lol!!If it is then it's pretty daring imo for 1974 and kinda away from the 'proper rules".i just luv it ,so impulsive.
What they're going to remix into Dolby Atmos aren't the master tapes (original recordings), so what's even the point of all that? I want to have ABBA's original recordings available easily.

I really don’t know about this Dolby Atmos 🤔 I mean, what’s the “value” if you can only enjoy it if you have to have a special system (which is probably going to cost a year’s salary to invest in) in order to listen to it on? Sorry if I sound naive, but I’m not a particularly techno nerdy kind of person 😅😅
Interesting, however I am rather wary about remixing old music especially if there is nothing wrong with it in the first. Maybe I'm just getting old. I'm more than happy with Abba's music as it is but that is just my view.
I never really “got” Atmos.. even with headphones I have that are compatible I could probably count on one hand the songs I felt worked.
But, some songs sound amazing through it due to having a different mix. I felt the Atmos mixes of Voyage in stereo were largely better than the actual stereo mixes.. same with some of George Harrison’s music.
Sorry for bursting the bubble but for the classic albums, this would take remixing them completely. Multichannel releases had been around forever, then why they didn't gave it a shot 20 years ago in Dolby/DTS format?. I believe they won't be using the master tapes, because they didn't preserved them!. I'm 95% sure they simply will be sourcing this from the stereo masters to extract vocals, drums etc. + bunch of plug ins to make it "Atmos multichannel".
ABBA preserved all of their mastertapes.

@@bobbysbrother137 i once read in an Abba chat forum some years ago something like that only the original master recording of SOS kinda got 'lost" by some careless treat and is only saved from s a reproduction source .But i damned can't remember details.Don't know if this is true but I wish i could find some more infos about it.I think rest of their archive is solid.Btw forgive my 'intimidation" but i'm kinda sceptic on B.Lorh's interference in the mix for their future dolby atmos releases regarding what i 'heard/didn't hear' in the 'Voyage' album.
@@alexioverdo5225Not sure about the original Master, but I believe that they still have the multi-track tapes for SOS, though they wiped the original vocals at the time for a German cover by a different artist. Same story with a couple of their other songs.

Bernhard Löhr didn't show any ear when mixing Voyage. The result is dull and does not have ABBA quality. If you listen to the Atmos Remmixes you can hear how Michael B. Tretow would have mixed them, a pleasure and a listening pleasure in contrast to the original. But Björn and Benny also failed there. That's why I don't have much hope because the source material is poorly mixed and too dull.
I believe nobody cared 'cos "Dolby Atmos" is just a pointless hype nobody can really listen to and experience as it should be, and the few that bother and do have the equipment aren't necessarily ABBA fans. 🤷♂
It makes for a nice collectable for some ABBA fans that also happen to be audiophiles. Guess the numbers...
Just like there aren't many 5.1 or 7.1 speaker sets in people's home either and these are the "common" and now affordable surround system for ages now. Atmos means spending money mere mortals are not willing to spent. It won't take off for music for the same reason SONY's surround CD didn't took off some 20 years ago.
Atmos won't be relevant for Jane and John Doe or the masses that would justify he extra work and money required for these alternative mixes. They have their shabby laptop, tablet, phone speakers, cheap earsets and stereo systems - given they even have one...
Very few individuals enjoy *listening* to music these days, but rather consume it in the background in endless auto generated playlists by Spotify & Co. These consumers don't care for Atmos.
