In case anyone is wondering, the grinding wheel is called a cup grinder. It's got diamond edges so it's tough and aggressive for just this type of thing. Good video.
That’s incredible. I’m glad you didn’t have the vacuum on at first. It shows how effective it is with the vac hooked up. I’m picking up that blade and dust cover. You rock. Thanks for sharing
Romeo, You're the man! Thanks for sharing and the amazing video. You went straight to the point and without all the BS... blah blah blah which most ppl make their videos. Most UA-camrs should see how a good video is made. We went thru hell removing a small foyer area. But with your technique we did a large kitchen and family room in 2 hours. Thanks man!!!
I am about to leave a comment about how much I love this video. A lot of people leave comments on videos to show how they benefitted from the information. Sometimes it's to leave constructive criticism. I'm leaving my Comment using my Samsung S5 cellular phone. It has an excellent warranty. I picked it up at my local phone store for a reasonable price. It allows me to efficiently leave comments on videos like this one. Anyways, here is the comment I would like to leave. Great video!
I know this is an old video but I've rented a drum sander with a 24 grit belt and used the grinder for perimeters for years. Saves the back and knees. Works fantastic. If it was a small bathroom I'd do just the grinder as you showed.
Holy cow! Off to Home Depot right now for this set up. Doing a huge master suite bathroom that was all tiles. Floors and walls. This will be so much easier. Thanks!
I think you were joking, right? Otherwise what kind of marriage it is that it cannot withstand a bathroom remodel? Split now before you make any kids... NO, NO, NO, what am I saying... you were joking, I'm sure.
Thank you, thank you...I watched your video after starring at the mortar all over the floor and finally had hope. Ran to Home Depot and bought the dust cover and man that thing works great...as long as your vaccum filter isn't all clogged up with mortar dust. Luckily I had a couple different diamond grinders, I really liked my slightly rounded one vs. the flat one I had and a wired grinder had more power than my battery one but they were both better than scraping!
Compadre!!!! You’re the man!!!!!🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼 I take my hat off to you for working with with that “pole and scraper” you started off with (before alternating with the grinder). I’m I’m Miami. Lots of work here. Tile removal from subfloors is NO JOKE!!!!! Cuidate hermano y Dios te bendiga🙏🏼💪🏼🤙🏼 with health and plenty of work your way😃
Extremely helpful! My girl and I are getting ready to lay down laminate and our kitchen is full of shitty DIY tile that I'm sure looks horrible underneath. this is going to be a big help.
Dude was pissed, all of that crazy manual labor. ;) Good tips man. It looks like you prepped the subfloor at the same time! There's a standup machine that does this as well which you can rent. Thanks for posting!
Awesome Dude and PERFECT timing. The subfloor on my screened in porch rotted out and I need to reuse the tiles but they have thinset and plywood on then. I will use this method to clean the back of each tile so that they can be re-used. Three "experts" said there was no way my tiles could be re-used.
Straight up talk - no bs ….beautiful….ty dude….wouldn’t mind seeing how you removed the tile beforehand …..I want to use a chipper as I did when I removed tile off concrete floor in basement bath but I’m concerned about chipper damaging wood staircase base as I remove the tile
We pulled up tile that was laid on top of hardwood floors.. (how it was layered: hardwood, mortar, underlayment. Mortar, tile) now there is mortar on the hardwood floors. Do you think this method will work for the hardwood floors without damaging it?
This is great and will give this a shot for the thinset removal. Former owners had some "free" marble tiles you'd find in a hotel lobby they chose to use. On top of not looking good and being very slippery when wet, they have a degree of waxing/sealing maintenance, and they are thick...so some of the doors weren't corrected. And there is Ditra underneath. I've been concerned about how to deal with the thinset removal but this looks like it'll work well.
Great Vid; best option I've seen on YT so far... I may have to redo tile job that just got done and let's just say I'm not impressed by. Hoping this will get me down to the screws on Hardie-Backer without ripping it all up, so can just unscrew it and pull it up.
Next time try the spyder scraper blades at Lowe’s.. they are $14 and go on end of sawzal.. they rip up tiles and thinset in a second.. good luck brotha and I’m actually doing same job now with those blades and flying thru it!!
Thanks bud. I had the same problem on fucking osb plywood. Exactly the same thing. I did Exactly what you have done. It is the ONLY WAY! Thanks for the video dude. You are the only one who has properly shown the correct way to get the fucking garbage kirdy off the osb. Gluing the kirdy down is idiotic in the first place.
This struggle is real. Great video and thanks for the tips. My life just got a whole lot easier. I hate to have to pay someone to do something. Just bought a home and have subfloor issues in the bathroom and I have battled mortar in the past. No fear now. Thanks again bro!
That's awesome man I'm glad I could be of help. What I would suggest also that was if you have some floor issues beyond just the mortar is to actually cut out the subfloor and replace it. And if you're going to put new tile down either use the Schlueter or quarter inch Dura rock
My scammer handyman told me that I didn't need backer board. My newly tile on stairs began to fail & lift within 4 months of moderate use. The tiles are broken so I'm going to remove the old mortar and re-use the tiles. Of course I'll use a licensed tile installer. I have failing grout as well so I have that re-done.
You need 1 1/2" subfloor for tile, to avoid movement, then cracking of grout. 300 lb guy standing at refrigerator, will flex 3/4" ply + 1/2" Cement board, subfloor a little.
Mike W., That's the situation I have. My scammer handyman put Thinset directly to plywood on stairs. The d*mned tiles began to fail in less than 3-4 months of moderate use. Because I have dust nightmares from a previous renovation I'm going to use Romeo's method to remove tiles on stairs myself. I may also add a Cyclone dust collection system to my remote- controled Vacmaster. Sitting the Vacmaster outside using additional vacuum hose is also an idea.
Thank you! Do you think that set up would work to remove mortar on top of hardy backer? Would it damage the hardy backer? Wonder if you could use it to take the hardy backer all the way down to the floor?
Could you please list the names (and links, if possible) of the instruments you used? I showed this video to Home Depot people and they could not figure out which tools we are talking about !!
This looks awesome. Would it also work on cement flooring?? I'm replacing wooden tiles in the house with ceramic tiles and really having trouble removing the adhesive/glue/ grout whatever it is that it's leaving behind. Been using a scraper and random glue removers but not having much success.
Thanks for the video and ideas would you use that same grinding wheel with metal mesh on the back of plaster they laid tile on top of plaster with metal mesh on my project. Any help would be appreciated thanks. This is also on plyboard.
Fwiw, my experience didn't work. I tried exact same tools, but a 7 inch grinder. It chewed up the plywood subfloor and ripped out a bunch of nails that were holding the subfloor to the joists
The blade in my angle grinder sits at a different height than the guard so it can't lay flat on the ground and has to be tilted. That makes it really hard to NOT take off any subfloor when I'm grinding away the thinset 🥲🥴
it is because of you that I went and bought the same things at Home D to do to my kitchen floor what you did. I borrowed a demo hammer and essentially jackhammered the tiles up and now I just have to get up the thinset and thankfully most of it was stuck to the tiles. I love your video, this is the awesomeness of UA-cam...people helping other people to save $$ and aggravation.
Thank you so much for this video!! This worked great! You have to clean the vacuum filter often. The suction of the vacuum actually helped hold the grinder to the floor.
In case anyone is wondering, the grinding wheel is called a cup grinder. It's got diamond edges so it's tough and aggressive for just this type of thing. Good video.

This was great! I was nervous about having to replace the subfloor if I removed the tile in my kitchen. Feel much more confident now, thanks man!!
awesome!
Holy cow! Off to Home Depot right now for this set up. Doing a huge master suite bathroom that was all tiles. Floors and walls. This will be so much easier. Thanks!
Brilliant! Didn't even know these blades exist. This video was a lifesaver thanks so much!
Badass. I'm considering replacing tile in a bathroom and this would be great. Appreciate the video.
Dude -- my husband and I have been struggling with this in our bathroom! you may have just saved my marriage
Fatina Williams happy to help! I was an angry dude myself until I figured something out.
I think you were joking, right? Otherwise what kind of marriage it is that it cannot withstand a bathroom remodel? Split now before you make any kids... NO, NO, NO, what am I saying... you were joking, I'm sure.
@@rechitsapivo so you knew it was a joke, and made a stupid comment anyway.
@@rechitsapivou were really weird 4 years ago

Great job my friend...this is exactly what I wanted to find out how to do, without dusting my whole area...FANTASTIC video !!!
Thank for the info brother, I'm glad I found your video before I Dove into my bathroom reno.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Very well explained. It helped me out a lot!
Wow, I looked on UA-cam before I even started taking the grout off the subfloor. And very glad that I did. Great help. Thanks

Now its 4.
@Romeo Santos Thank you VERY MUCH for uploading this video. I feel confident that I can do this myself.
You my friend just saved me alot of time...THANK YOU
Straight up talk - no bs ….beautiful….ty dude….wouldn’t mind seeing how you removed the tile beforehand …..I want to use a chipper as I did when I removed tile off concrete floor in basement bath but I’m concerned about chipper damaging wood staircase base as I remove the tile
Now this is a helpful video. Hell yes.
Romeo thanks so much, this method has saved me so much time & produced perfect results!
Brilliant bro, thanks so much. I already have the grinder. Been worried about this forever.
Dude, I'm seriously fighting the exact same felt covered shit right now! Thank you so damn much!
I've been watching other videos like this where a "Rotary Hammer Chisel" was used. Much faster and hardly any dust.
Hey Man! that was MOST helpful!! Thank you!!!

Heading to Home Depot right now…thanks for the video!
This video is about to save my life... dining and kitchen tile we need to remove... this should do the trick
Thanks man!
Works really well!
That’s incredible! How many grinder pads did you go through?
Wow! 👌 👏
That worked great!
You're a lifesaver brother
Thanks! You probably just saved us from a lot of swearing 😂
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you sir!!
Great idea! And I already have all the tools so that will work great 👍🏼

Thank you!! Very helpful!
when laying tile on wooden sub floor always use cement board first to lay your tile on, that way you wont have this problem.

Awesome demo!!!
Thanks for sharing
was there backer board under the tile also? or was it just tile and the mortar right onto the plywood?
Mike W., That's the situation I have. My scammer handyman put Thinset directly to plywood on stairs. The d*mned tiles began to fail in less than 3-4 months of moderate use. Great video! Informative and it works great! Thanks!
The quickest is a Bosch demo hammer with a thin 7inch scraping blade attached .
Next round is on me, Romeo. Thanks.
Thank you. I've been struggling with hand tools (chisels)
Could you please list the names (and links, if possible) of the instruments you used? I showed this video to Home Depot people and they could not figure out which tools we are talking about !!

So helpful dude! Can you link the products, I have an entire kitchen to do 🤦♂️
Great idea. Thanks for posting.👌
Take a bow cause that was incredible sir.
Thank you sir, very helpful adn I appreciate it.
Thanks for the video and ideas would you use that same grinding wheel with metal mesh on the back of plaster they laid tile on top of plaster with metal mesh on my project. Any help would be appreciated thanks. This is also on plyboard.
Thank You!!! Much appreciated!!!
Sweet! Thanks, buddy! You got a new subscriber in me!
Thank thank you thank. Amazing
Thank you. Great job.
They tiled on the subfloor. Thankyou.
Nice!! Thanks for the great video!
What if the underlayment is OSB? Will it destroy it?
Fwiw, my experience didn't work. I tried exact same tools, but a 7 inch grinder. It chewed up the plywood subfloor and ripped out a bunch of nails that were holding the subfloor to the joists
Fuckin rights!! Thank you for showing the step by step brother
Freaking awesome man!
Thx that was helpful im sitting with the same issue
cant you just replace the plywood?
Awesome tool good job.
Does this work on OSB?
just what i was looking for.
JJ T glad it could help!
Your the man
Deadly!
alot of work for a little grinder .try a 9 inch grinder
My nightmare is over, I need Make and Model numbers for each items to buy, looks dust shroud is specific to each model/Make.
Thanks
Awesome man.
Good vid!
Didnt trun the vacuum on.
I'm on the ground diying. Lol
Rent a floor drum sander next time
The blade in my angle grinder sits at a different height than the guard so it can't lay flat on the ground and has to be tilted. That makes it really hard to NOT take off any subfloor when I'm grinding away the thinset 🥲🥴
THANK YOU!!
Romeo, I am about to rip up some tile and would love to use this method. Can you list the products you purchased?
What UA-cam is all about.... Sharing, Teaching, Helping and Learning! Thanks Brother!
Yes sir!
it is because of you that I went and bought the same things at Home D to do to my kitchen floor what you did. I went out and bought this stuff yesterday for my bathroom remodel. Worked so fast. Thank you for the video!
Thank you so much for this video!! This worked great! You have to clean the vacuum filter often. The suction of the vacuum actually helped hold the grinder to the floor.
Thanks for posting. I’m in the same boat. Removing marble flooring to replace with hardwood 🤗
Do you think that this will work with a metallic mesh?
Oh man I think you just saved me so much headache and pain!
Dude this video is great I'm so happy I found this
